In this week's video, I show you how to play 3 'must know' pentatonic patterns which you can use as flashy runs, or as subtle fillers.
It's best to think of these runs in separate blocks, or shapes. This makes them more versatile and easier to create variations and transpose them into other keys.
I recommend transposing these into a few other keys so you're technique isn't just limited to the key of C minor.
Happy shedding!

Trumpet player here. After years of playing/struggling with boring drill books, I have been yearning for scale development that is meaningful, applicable to real-life playing, and FUN. I am going to practice these patterns against a backing track. Awesome!

Great work Simon! Two other really effective variants: 1) displace the start point by an 8th note. Horn players use this all the time. Check out Wilton Felder’s iconic tenor solo on Street Life, and 2) use different rhythms within each lick, keeping the notes the same. For example, mix 8th and 16th notes 👍
@annieblu2048
@annieblu2048 2 года назад
What is an 8th note?
@chriswright2553
@chriswright2553 2 года назад
@@annieblu2048 Hi Annie. In 4/4 time there are four beats to the bar. If you play a note on each beat for the full duration of the beat, it’s a quarter note. Divide that duration in half and you have 8th notes (8 per bar). Do it again and you have 16th notes…

Thanks for this vid! I use pentatonics all the time on guitar, but applying them effectively on piano has always been more difficult for me. Definitely going to add these runs to my arsenal.

I am adding in Improvisation to my classical piano experience. I only play by reading and it gets stifling 😜! I have been following the beginners' lessons. So far so good but I just can't figure out what he means by 'up 1 or skip 1 down'. A real dummies 😅. Does the number mean 1 whole note or 1 semi tone? Which is the reference note for each down and up?
