Thank you for showing the HALF LOG CABIN BLOCK! I am beginning a black and white quilt for one of my grand daughters from a photo. The only difference is that the whole quilt is made from two and a half in strips so mine will have two 2 1/2 inch center pieces. You explained it so well and now I can begin!
Nice tutorial. One thing though- it isn't necessary to use y seam in your on point table runner. If you assemble your rows on the diagonal, y seams aren't part of the assembly.
Years ago I bought a skein of 100% wool to knit a large rectangle. Washed in hot water and dried at hottest setting, it shrunk much smaller and is very thick. makes a perfect ironing mat to keep close to my machine
I’m pretty late to this video but found it while on Covid 19 lockdown here in Edinburgh, Scotland. Can’t wait to try this technique. Like you, I think I will be using this with Christmas fabrics. Thanks so much for your thorough tutorial 🙂
I just fell on your video. Thank you offered me the answer for a small quilt for my son. All American material left me confused,so thank you. Versailles,France
You have done such a great job demonstrating and explaining clearly make it look so easy marinate and very precise. Thank you so much a beautiful block that I must try.
Hi Kea! Great tutorial and thank you for showing us this Easy Half Log Cabin Block. Log Cabin blocks, as you well know, are one of the most basic blocks to work with and one of my favorites because it is so versatile. So many different looks just by rearranging your blocks!! It would be very cool if you could do a tutorial for beginner quilters to actually show the various ways to layout the log cabin blocks! ;-) ;-) By the way, I LOVE the hanging rod behind you to display your projects! Here is a tip for the beginners . . . when you finish a project and you have leftover fabric, I like to organize my fabrics as I go so I will cut my fabrics into specific sized blocks and make my own "pre-cuts". Here are some sizes to consider: Layer Cakes = 10" squares, Charm packs = 5" squares, Jelly roll strips = 2 1/2" x 44". There are lots more sizes one could cut but I usually try to stick with the basic ones that are most used in many projects. I cut my scraps immediately after finishing each project because I have all my coordinated fabrics together and can then keep them together for my next fun project(s) like the ones Kea has shown here. :-) Thanks again for this tutorial and keep them coming Kea!!
Thank you for sharing this information; I am a beginner quilter, even though I have sewn for many years, so I am excited to try this as I love the look of it. Happy quilting………….
Wow! What a great tip! Saves sooo much time!!! Love the projects! I have the layer cake of that Halloween fabric! Now I know what I can do with it! Thanks Kea!!
Thank you for starting to do sewing tutorials again. I think the small wall hanging would be the perfect size for a baby quilt if sewn in different fabric. I am definitely going to try this. Thank you.
Enjoyed your tutorial, how wonderful to find a way to cut log cabin without any struggle, wish I had this idea many yrs ago. I am old and even older at 84, lol. You are so sweet will watch all I can find of your videos.
Thank you for showing and demonstrating this project. I have layer cakes I have no idea what I should make with them. This looks like a great project to make some small quilts for a nursing home around the corner from me. You explained each step very well.
So good I watched it twice and wrote down all instructions including the ironing method. I so want to do this... Thank you very much for this demonstration 🙂
That's a good-sized lap quilt rather than a wall hanging you've got there Kea. And if you put on a wide border, it'd be even more generous sized. It'd be particularly good with a layer cake that definitely has half "light" and half "dark" prints so you really get a contrast between the logs. Well done, thanks for sharing this technique! ~Diana from Toronto
This is a really clever way to use up layer cakes. Maybe it will get me through eventually cut up that Lori holt layer cake I love too much to cut up in pieces 😂😂😂😂 but this is just an effect I wanted to try, so a huge thank you for sharing this! I love your patchwork tutorial much more than unboxing ❤️
Beautiful quilts, I’m a beginner and would love to try and make one using the technique you showed. Halloween quilt is so cute, love to see the tutorial on it. Thank you for sharing your videos.
Very cute, easy block.i am going to try this some of the layer cakes I have. Thanks for the idea. When I work with a series of blocks , I use a quick version of portable design board using 11x17 mailing envelopes and slide in a piece of card board from cereal boxes, to set each block unit on. Light, easy to stack and store
Thanks for the tutorial! Very cool way to use layer cakes! On the tablerunner, if you sew the rows together diagonally then there are no y seams. It allows the setting triangles to be added at the beginning and the end of the rows.
I really like this tutorial. I have a few layer cakes but I have not yet made anything from them. I am now inspired to make some things. I am happy that I happened onto your site.
Thank you so much Kea, I really really enjoyed watching you make those half cabin blocks. And WOW 😮 WOW 😮 WOW. That table runner and wall hanging are superb and gorgeous too. I don’t celebrate Halloween and I wouldn’t really use that type of fabric, but those two things you made are really really stunning and gorgeous. Stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Super cute quilt and super easy too! Your tutorial is awesome and easy to follow and thank you for sharing this with us! I have been stumped on what to do with my few layer cakes, and this just lit the spark and I’m going to go get one out today! 😊
I loved this, what a fun and easy way to use 10 in squares. I'm going to build in on a 12 inch square and turn it into a quilt as you go project. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice tutorial, thank you. I like the idea of starting the block with a 4" square & using all of the fabric. I love zero waste! I'd like to share 10 tips that I was once given: 1. Show your viewers the finished project before you start. It helps them visualize how things fit together as you go along. 2. Make a written outline of your tutorial. It helps you feel confident & keeps the tutorial on track. 3. Practice what you are going to say until it's smooth & natural. *Don't skimp on your practice* -- you don't need perfection, but you should want confidence. 4. Record a test video just as though it was your final one. That way you can be sure that what you need is neatly placed where you need it to be ahead of when you need it there. It will also show you where to place things to keep them in, or out of, the camera's view. (BTW, If you'll need to lay out & then move aside fabric pieces, have a piece of scrapbook paper ready to lay them on. That will be easier to move around without moving each individual piece.) 5. Review the test video to see if you are using for slang words or phrases that may be unclear to your viewers. 6. Listen for verbal pauses. Most people make sounds (like "ah" or "um") & draw out vowels (like "toooo" or "aaaand") instead of pausing silently to collect their thoughts. Verbal pauses distract viewers & make you sound unsure. Yet most of us aren't even aware of them! Here is a trick that can help: while you practice, have a listener drop a coin into a metal pot every time you use a verbal pause. Once you're aware of using them. you can start avoiding them. 7. Review the test video to correct your outline so the words feel natural for you. Print it out so you can read from outside the camera's view. Place it so it's not obvious but you can still check it easily if you need to. This will help you feel confident & keep you on track. 8. Review your appearance on the test video. Clothes should be comfortable & attractive. They should fit well & not tug. Choose complimentary colors that are not too bright or too dark. Keep your hair neat so you don't fuss with it. In short, keep all of it from distracting the viewer from what you are teaching. 9. Clear the work area of items not required for the tutorial. Reducing visual distraction helps the viewer to focus on *you* & what you're teaching. 10. Do the same for your studio background. Again, you want the viewer's eye to naturally rest on you, not wander over your wall & shelves. Finally, DO NOT let these or any criticisms stop you from making tutorials. You have a great voice & an easy style that is enjoyable to watch. Take this advice & use what works for you. Remember, we never stop learning so we shouldn't ever stop trying to improve. Thank you for reading all the way through this. Remember, you have something of value to offer. You can be sure that I'll be tuning in again! Best of Luck, Deb
Hi, I'm a beginner quilter and glad I found you today. I love the blocks you made, please thank Helen. We don't celebrate Halloween either but your projects were great, given me some good ideas. Thanks again, blessings
Kea, thank you for such a fun video. Not only did I learn but it was not intimidating and it has really helped my quilty bug come back to life. Take care, ann
Just wanted to mention for clarity, you are not turning the block a half turn you’re only turning it 1/4 turn. It is an amazing fabrics saving cutting method and I thank you for sharing it!
Thank you for saying this in such a nice way. It is hard to say everything correctly when you are making these videos. I appreciated the kind tone of your comment.
Yes! I agree with her. You were really nice about it. Some of the quilt police are so nasty but you're one of the people that make the quilting community so cool.
Great blocks! I am a beginner for big quilts as I have learned doing small projects first, so would probably need to watch again and write it down, then play to figure out the puttingbtogether. Oh and we don't celebrate Halloween either! X
Would love to see a tutorial on how to do the on point table runner. I am unsure why you needed to use Y seams. It looks terrific! Just found you and this awesome tutorial -- thanks for sharing this technique!
I have had a layer cake in my stash for so long that I forgot what I bought it for -- now I have 42 blocks to sew together into a very happy bright quilt! Thanks!
Going to try that. I live in Hawai'i and Kea means white. The very large volcano/mountain on island of Hawai'i is Mauna Kea, white mountain. Just a little info on your name. Hauoli kuiki means happy quilting.
I love variations on the traditional Log Cabin pattern and this one is going in my Future Projects notebook. Sandie is right about sewing the rows together diagonally so there is no need for 'Y' seams. I use narrow strips of light iron-on stabilizer on the diagonal seams before I cut the block apart so there's no stretching of that outside edge.
I am a new quilter. I learnt from your tutorial about ironing. I think that's why my projects come out distorted is from ironing and not just pressing. So thank you for that.
Kea--The 3 Project Layer Cake Video was really great! Would you be willing to give a PDF of dimensions/quantities needed? That would be very helpful. Thanks for sharing your talents!
Just watched this tutorial and I realy enjoyed this project. I want to learn to quilt. Thus far I have made easy pillow cases, and blankets for children. But not anything like this. Ive been watching videos and came across this tutorial and I love it. It seems to be something I will to be able to do. I would definitely give it a try thank you.
I really enjoyed your tutorial, these projects are really cute!! Just FYI, when sewing on point, if you sew the rows together diagonally you don’t have Y seams 😃
nancy quinn I just found this channel & think she did a good job with tutorial. She looks young ( like a newlywed ) so your prayers for her & her son saddened me to think that she’s dealing with any challenge.😔. Did she share the circumstances or can you share? Prayers here regardless for them 🙏🏻.
Hi Nancy, thank you for sharing! MGS- we have actually been married for almost 10 years :) but thank you for saying we look so young! Our son has Hydrocephalus and has been having some trouble with the shunt that drains excess fluid from the brain. He’s four and has had 10 brain surgeries. Thank you for your prayers ❤️
