3 Reasons DEATH ROW Crumbled! Stunted Growth Music

To understand Death Row and their practices, you have to also understand the times they were in. Firstly, hip hop, which started around 1973, had only got to less than 20 years before Death Row was officially formed. That’s shorter than the career life span of Lil Wayne. There’s so much about the business that was still unknown and many artist were getting bad deals, robbed of publishing and willingly giving up masters for an opportunity to rise from the poverty stricken, mostly low class lifestyle of the African American. Death row records seemed to have all the answers. They began literally with Suge Knight getting one of hip hop’s most important people Dr Dre) out of his deal and went on to becoming arguably hip hop’s most successful label. Not only that, they had the potential to become a fixture in the game even today had the following Growth Stunts not happen. They had Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, The DOC, The Dog pound, Tupac, Nate Dogg and even Little Bow Wow. From 92 to 1996, anything Death Row touched was a success. Platinum albums, went diamond and according to Tupac was practically printing money. With a name like Death Row, the personalities of the owners and faces, the aggressive business strategy and get down or lay down persona, even for the early 90s, you could tell there would be a fall at some point, as with any great empire. But no one knew their fall from grace would be this devastating to a once unstoppable hip hop label when it came to selling records, and doing pretty much whatever they wanted. Here are 3 reasons the inevitable fall happened and changed hip hop’s future forever.

Imagine an alternate universe where Suge Knight treated Dre and Snoop with more respect, had a better working environment, and just more sense. In that universe, not only is Death Row still around but it has flourished for almost 3 decades. Think about it, having Dre, Snoop, Pac (possibly still alive), and Dre guys Eminem, 50 Cent, Game, Kendrick and Snoop having Bow Wow around. So much money and potential was gone because Suge just had to be super gangster and a bully in the industry.

Suge would be over there with Dre making billion dollar deals. Totally irrelevant but I think the same thing with R Kelly. He was the greatest songwriter/singer/producer of his time and because he didn’t have dick discipline he’s rotting away instead of doing tycoon deals over there with Jay z, Kanye and Nas. It’s a shame. My brothers are pulled down by a lack of discipline.

AGREE 100! I still represent Death Row with a shirt, at it's peak there was and will never be a label like it. Sadly it didn't last, in hindsight some things could have been handled differently, but I'll never forget the legacy it's left, when Pac came aboard, that was the Chicago Bulls 72 wins, which ironically was happening the same year, just the dominances, I was 14 then, so to think things peaked for music, NBA at the age I woulda never guessed it it, but I will always represent Death Row, Pac, and I even have love for Suge. Yea Suge was a rough dude, but IMO he was real, which I respect, he wasn't into the demonic lucifarnian stuff you see in the music, entertainment industry, he was a straight alpha male from the streets, so while everyone cheered his incarceration, it hurt seeing that, pray one day he gets out.

Today, as a 90's teenager, I still hold Death Row in high regard as much as Ruthless Records for musically making the streets something worth admiring. But on the other hand, After Dre left DR, and things started unraveling as I discovered more of what went on behind the scenes, I began to think a lot of things just wasn't necessary to maintain success. I know this will not be a popular statement to say, but I think Tupac coming to Death Row was the beginning of the end for the label. Think about all of the artists that were on Death Row, the greatest producer in Hip-Hop history { Dr. Dre } iconic artists like Snoop Dogg, and more. When Pac came to the label he bought a lot of talent and passion but also a lot of negativity. His actions beef'in with the East coast separated him from the other artist on Death Row and Dr.Dre. Pac's beef was not theirs, but he wanted them to back him up, many refused. A number of Death Row artist album releases were put on hold because of Pac and that changed the morale of the label, a number of those albums were definitely going gold or platinum or better. Pac getting into the fight in Vegas { which was not his beef } led to Shug going to jail, and with Dre no longer at the label, it truly began to crumble. If Pac never came to Death Row, the label would still be around to this day, and very successful.

Dre was a Star Producer. But like I said they didn't need him. They had other people there that was making hot beats. According to Danny Boy. Dre would come through every blue moon anyway. A major problem with Death Row is that they didn’t know how to let more than one person shine at the same time. People’s shit got put on hold to cater to Snoop, then to 2Pac. We could’ve gotten Rage’s album sooner, which would’ve been bigger if it dropped before 1997. We should’ve gotten more from Tha Dogg Pound. J-Flexx should’ve had an album on Death Row, the Helter Skelter album…etc. Putting everything behind 2Pac wasn’t a solid long-term move even if he didn’t get killed. By all means, Pac was the general, but that’s not a reason not to have strong soldiers able to support the label.

Im sure Suge was overwhelmed by his work ethic and thought he hit the ultimate jackpot. An actor as well as a rapper.Every record mogul has that one star that is the face of the label. Suge had 3. Dre, Snoop and Pac. Tommy motola wasn't trying to find someone that could compete with Mariah Carey. Clive Davis was not trying to find someone that could compete with Whitney. Epic records was not trying to find someone to compete with Michael Jackson. Once you have that main star, you run with it and let the competition worry about trying to find their version of what you already got.

The real reasons why Death Row Records fell apart is because first Dr. Dre the main producer and the one who oversaw the other artists careers left. Then 2Pac who had just became the main superstar of the label died, Suge Knight then got locked up from 1997 - 2001 so he wasn't able to manage the label properly and the careers of the other artists that were there, plus the new ones that came in and he had to release a lot of old material from previous artists without their permission to keep the label from going bankrupt, which it did anyways. Snoop Doggy Dogg the last main star of the label ended up having beef with Suge Knight/Death Row and left the label and went over to No Limit Records and finally Daz Dillinger another main producer that helped the careers of others left the label soon after

I can't believe that almost thirty years later, new pressings of The Chronic still have the lame 'Executive Produced by Suge Knight' credit slapped over the original 'Produced by Dr. Dre' credit. Now that they're owned by Hasbro, they might as well just slap a Transformer over it. Because that's how childish Suge was being when he changed it in the first place.

Who knows how many of the upcoming artists even from different areas who would’ve signed there if it wasn’t so reckless and non professional. No mention of Malik from illegal ...Snoop met him while he was on tour...just like he crossed paths with other artists...he was a teenager who could spit like a grown man with battle cipher experience...he was DPGC and featured on " Doggystyle"...Dr Dre is not just a beatmaker... he is a executive producer who mastered the studio control board...Jimmy Iovine who owned Interscope Records and former producer/ engineer for Aerosmith and Bruce Springsteen ...realized that Dr Dre was a perfectionist who could mix his own music at his own music...Suge Knight was a great businessman but not creative like Dr Dre ...who had the vision to create something out of nothing...in the studio...he started off as a bodyguard to Bobby Brown who played Football in College and in the NFL briefly...with a few street connections...no mention of Dick Griffey and SOLAR Records...or the incarcerated Heavyweight West Coast street legend Harry O who helped Suge & Dre on the business side and music side of Death Row...giving them capital and a studio/ office space to work in when they only had a 24 track control board and the music equipment Dre had in his house with no furniture and a leased Ferrari Testarossa parked next to a 64 Chevy Impala...I must admit not signing Warren G was a major loss...he was on the Above The Rim soundtrack and scored a big hit with " Regulate " that Def Jam benefited from ...probably more so than Death Row/Interscope because it set him up for the platinum record sales of his debut album and they did not release a Nate Dogg album in time to capitalize on that success...even the Dogg Pound record should have came out as soon as Doggystyle was cooling off ...eventhough Murder Was The Case ...the long form video and soundtrack was a brilliant movie...the same thing should have been done for Pac's double album...a long form video or mini movie with Death Row artists as supporting cast members ...but that is the past ...it is time to move on!

I disagree about Bow Wow. Having a kid artist, even if successful, wouldve been perceived as a joke due to their hardcore image. Crossroads and Gangsta’s Paradise were huge hits for BTNH and Coolio. But I would argue that they did more harm than good in the long term. Those songs abandoned their core audience and attracted a “pop” audience. Once they were seen as pop artists, their core artists stopped following. Since the pop audience follows whatever the core audience thinks is cool, eventually the pop audience stopped following as well. This couldve had a similar effect at Death Row. It worked in Ruthless Records favor that JJ Fad hit before NWA. Remember, NWA received a lot of flack for their involvement with Michel’le.
