Also as a Blackmagic shooter (OG, 4k and 6kg2) who also shoots on the S5 (haven't upgraded yet, but will be getting the S5iix) mixing Panasonic and Blackmagic footage is just so easy. Even when I shoot on the OG. The footage just works together with the S5 seamlessly! Yeah Panasonic and Blackmagic are just a great combo and now with this new camera with the L-mount. I'm a fan, and will be grabbing this little dude here in a bit as well.
Everyone buries the lede on this analysis. BM open gate = 12-bit RAW completely internal, versus Lumix open gate = 10-bit 4:2:0 spooled out to an SSD or feeding out via a laggy HDMI port to a clunky external monitor. Plus with the CC 6k you get balanced audio inputs, integration with an affordable cloud workflow (soon, and totally internal, just supply internet which can be done with a cellphone), a separate locking power input, metadata based timecode (rather than tying up an audio channel and having to conform timecode in a separate step), plus a screen twice the size and a menu system that’s much easier to navigate. Autofocus is a thing, but with practice and shot planning manual focus works well enough or often better in many scenarios. If you need to capture fast video action (sports, wildlife), neither of these cameras is a good fit. Pick a hybrid system with a better long lens ecosystem such as Nikon or Canon. And go back to the start, 12-bit RAW or 10-bit 4:2:0 for image quality absolutely there’s no comparison.
Love to see their sensor diversification now. L Mount is really an interesting direction. I'm not sure what your preferred nd solution is but I would assume they release a Pro version with internal ND soon. Congrats on the new cam!
If they add internal ND to a future, L mount, camera it will have to be electronic ND, because all their previous ND were mechanical swapping, and the L mount has to short a flange distance to support that type of ND. That said if one is willing to use longer flange mount lenses, like EF, then one can get a ND lens adapter and have something similar.
Agreed! I’m such a fan of Blackmagic RAW, that when this camera was announced, I contemplated selling my Canon R5C 🤔 B-RAW is just damn easy to work with. And so flexible in post. Looking forward to what you do w this BMCC6K
As someone already said ... this seems to be their first camera in new lineup. So looks like there will be Pro version and cube (URSA like) versions. Cannot wait :D.
@@YOUAREMYKINThey should be able to fit ND filters for Lmount since flange distance is 20mm. It's 18mm for emount and sony got ND in FX6, although it's electronic ND :D.
@@AnthonyRodriguezz I bet by "They" you mean BMD. They cannot fit it cause it was 2 filters (2 and 4) in front of each other, so definitely taking more space than 20mm. I hope they will ad electronic one like FX6 have. Ronin 4D got rotating one if I'm not mistaken.
I keep thinking about the built in 5” screen! My biggest point of friction right now is always rigging an external monitor and having to power it and run cables. the Komodo X and now this are really cool solutions to that specific problem!
Don't let the form haters deter you. I totally agree with your points. I really want to hear your perspective based on the cameras you have. New subscriber here.
Just bought mine today ! I had the 6k pro since its release and this is my dream camera , the 3:2 og sensor is huge for anamorphic work, I can’t wait to receive mine :)
To make a future better form factor camera, BM first have to improve their camera app to have image trasmission like sony and red already did. A internal ND would be possible but it would be more on the expensive side like the one in the canon C70. Alternatively BM could keep a 4-5 inch display and move the battery spot to the bottom and make the camera less wide. Auto focus is not the focus from BM since its cinema focused and if you need it, just use a PD movie 3 air. Personally I'd wait to upgrade for a pro version. But I'm impressed by the image and low light performance, also the L mount since it support so many budget cinema and anamorphic lenses.
I share your reasons for getting the BMCC6K camera. I'm currently shooting with the Sony FX30. But, I have had my eyes on the S5iix, in large part because Panasonic has some of the best skin tones in their color science. And because the S5iix can record to an SSD. Just like my old BMPCC4K. (Which I sold for an A7iv). And having shot with the BMPCC4K, I came to love the color science of BRAW. Like you said, BRAW does look "cinematic" straight out of camera. There are so many great cameras available these days. So, it's hard to stick with one brand over long periods of time.
I want to make videos with my vintage lenses. The problem is that no one shows in their videos how to do it. Can you make a video about this subject. I have Helios, Minolta Rokkor 58mm f1.4, takumar lenses that I want to use. Thank you for the great videos.
That might be an interesting video! It’s Kindof hard because pulling focus manually is a really odd thing to teach as it mainly gets better with practice only. There aren’t many “tips” per say. I might try and put something together though!
BRO SEeing how your footage looks honestly I can see why you are into the BM I like it too and once I saw they added L MOUNT i was like finally a BM camera for me lol but ill be honest the s52 and s52 x are probably more than I need especially right now but if business goes well I probably will end up getting it . I may have to rent it a few times first. currently I have som evintage lenses and when I put that on my s1 I call that black magic mode lol
I have the Black Magic 4K and found it just difficult to work with because I'm a photographer and I couldn't grok the manual focus while holding it out away from my body so I could see the display. I had no one to help me get it rigged up, though I tried on my own, unsuccessfully, wasting a lot of money. I did mount it to a tripod and I have to say, I found the footage gorgeous when I could use it. I think you're going to love the 6K. You have the expertise to get the most out of it and the images are the best.
I think this camera makes sense for people that love the blackmagic image and want full frame. I won’t personally get one, but I am planning on renting one to check it out
Absolutely agree with the reason number 3. The image quality is really amazing on all BM cameras. So you cannot achieve the same look on S5IIX footage in post?
im MFT & L mount user. but now after black magic L mount.. I'm undecided to let go MFT or maybe keep both L & MFT. Do you also film with MFT system? do you think i should keep MFT system along with full-frame L mount?
There’s not gonna be a pro. A BMD rep said that if they could have included the NDs they would have but they couldn’t fit it in. Get the Fotodiox Adapter if you really want to have rear NDs and you’ll be set.
It is very unsure the Pro version will have internal NDs. Apparently, it wasn't possible with the flange distance of the L-Mount. Hopefully they'll find a way!
@@AbdonPhirathonthere is probably gonna be a pro and it’ll have a different body form factor, so they’d be able to fit NDs into it. Also Panasonic has a patent for internal NDs that they’ll probably share with blackmagic since L mount alliance shares stuff between themselves
Yeah, the Blackmagic cameras do seem to have that ‘something special’. Hopefully they can add a solid AF in the future without removing internal NDs too. Maybe they have the same concern that LUMIX talked about whereby PDAF deteriorates image quality slightly? I remember seeing a video recently showing that the Lumix S5 sensor might be slightly better than the S5 II in some ways. Could you maybe please do a side by side between the S5IIX and BM when it arrives?
Great video! I wonder what kind of changes we may see to battery life. I also wonder how close the image quality gets compared to external S5iix braw. Thoughts?
Nice and tight video. There is still some "black magic" dedicated cinema cameras have regarding image over mirrorless cams that judging by specs alone should no longer exist. Quantifying these discrepancies beyond the sensor is a subject of great interest.
All the clips that were from blackmagics website were the ones I graded. If they were odd, that’s probably because I didn’t spend enough time on them and messed up 🤦🏽♂️😂
My only concern with the BMCC is its shutter readout speed 😬 at open gate resolutions it reads at 25/ms which is one of the worst readout speeds I’ve seen on newer camera releases, and maybe that there’s no 6k 60fps but that’s just nit-picky for budget and beginners. That being said, everything else seems amazing on the new BMCC as far as features go in my personal opinion
Yeah the rolling shutter isn’t the best but actually the s5iix has the same rolling shutter performance. You have to remember that’s only with open which you are probably not going to be shooting in all the time. When you drop it down to 4k the rolling shutter performance is actually not bad at all
if i own s5IIx and my option is to get video assist 5 (i own ninja v+) or to sell the camera and get bmcc6K FF - raw to raw - there is any difference? - i think this is somthing that people want to know - if the image is the same then s5II / X with monitor can be amazing - if the image is more cinematic with bm and with panasonic look more like video then the bm6K is better option for image
This FF 6k has a great image I must admit. The revolutionary camera I want to see happen would be a Foveon sensor full frame cinema camera with BMD color science and BRAW. Imagine the image that would give. Dream on...
@@AnthonyRodriguezzYeah Foveon tech is very interesting but not easy to develop especially for video. Sony has a few Foveon like patents as well. Hopefully this leads to some revolutionary breakthrough for cinematography and not just photography. They already have a cult following in the photography world. From Google's Generative AI: Sigma Foveon sensors are a type of digital camera image sensor that uses a layered structure similar to film. Each photosite consists of three vertically stacked photodiodes, which results in a full-color readout at every individual site. Unlike most sensors found in many mirrorless and DSLR cameras, Foveon sensors capture color information at every pixel making them much more power-hungry
I agree about Cubed camera.....but the form factor of the Pockets and Cinema 6K is awful. The battery option is terrible. They don't bother fixing that when the C70 gave them a template of how to fix it.
I actually don’t find them that bad in regards to form factor. The c70 has a pretty similar form factor without being angled for comfort. The battery life on the other hand is pretty terrible 😂
Compared to cameras like RED, the value for money with Blackmagic is outstanding. And of all cameras, the Blackmagics have always looked the most like film to me.
I agree the the blackmagic pockets putout very nice footage…..but two things….build quality is very cheap and that lack of usable DR is real. I’ve watched many guys using them and they all pretty much say too noisy after iso 800. So, are ok to use in lit work or daylight…..
What do you mean by usable DR? A noisy image doesn’t necessarily mean less dynamic range. You gotta remember this is raw footage so no internal NR is being applied unlike Sony and any other brand
@@AnthonyRodriguezz This is a pretty complex subject…so I will try and simplify my comment and hope it is understandable. Dynamic range is one primary way to describe the noise characteristics of a digital camera. Noise, iso and DNR are interrelated to each other. As ISO goes up away from the native ISO SNR goes down and noise goes up. On previous BM pockets the the usable top ISO was about 800 before to much noise as stated by many users. When you read in camera specs what the DNR of a camera is ….like 14+ stops….this is in reference to the base ISO of the camera. As you move up and away from the base ISO noise is induced and DNR shrinks. So, usable DNR just means the DNR you have at the top usable ISO before it induces too much noise. Or, we can just say as you increase ISO away from the base ISO the DNR is decreasing and the likely hood of visible noise is increasing. For some cameras this happens at a lower ISO. Your S5IIx is significantly better at this than the previous BM pockets. For previous models after ISO 800 …. it seems to be a breaking point for many. I will say that what sticks out first for most people is noise not shrinking DNR. Maybe the term usable DNR is a little confusing. Cheers….
@@AnthonyRodriguezz Thats funny since I watched a video on here from a guy thats been using one for pro work for a while & he managed to get 14.5 stops out of his.
No box camera has ever been promised by Black Magic, and it makes no business sense for them to build one. In other words, don't expect to see one in six months.
I found it really disappointing, black magic hasn't put out a camera in a while, and now this is officially their "cinema line" and beyond the uncomfortable pretty much universally disliked formfactor, it's the lack of professional io that I find frustrating, its not a "cinema camera" that can be easily used on higher end sets where SDI, and Timecode are necessities, and it also doesn't have the run & gun features I'd want like built in NDS full sized XLRs IBIS etc... I'm not sure who this works for... I'd prefer the pocket 6k pro for run & gun and the panasonic BS1H (which also costs 2500) for higher end work, I think people will still buy it, but it sounds like pure hype with no significant improvements.
I’d disagree on many points you’ve made. The c70 has the same exact IO and is a perfectly fine camera to use on set. Also IBIS for the longest time was not a usable thing on set, yet you mentioned it. I completely understand your disappointment but I think your expectations are a bit silly for a camera at this price point with a full frame sensor, internal BRaw And a beautiful image that most “cinema” cameras that are 2-3x the price can’t produce. With all that being said, I do understand your frustration
@@AnthonyRodriguezz this camera doesn't fit a nieche (it's not made for working with a biger crew and it's not made for run & gun work) and the image isnt good enough alone to justify the inconvenience for a lot of people. that was my point.
I again, strongly disagree with the points your making. If you’re not able to mark a good piece of work, whether you have a bigger crew or are run n gun, with this camera and aren’t happy with the results… I’m sorry but the camera really isn’t the issue here. While I do understand and agree that the announcement left a good bit to be desired, to say the camera can’t fit in any niche is a little over the top
At this point people are buying cameras just to say they have it. I look at this video and all I could think about is a whole bunch of unnecessary redundancy. Mismatched redundancy.
