Frick.... I feel that. What can help tho, is looking at particular features in other people’s art style. Look at some artists and how they draw their eyes, noses, mouths, heads. See if any of those styles match how it looks in your head (or at least sort of) and go from there. Of course, the fundamentals are necessary but when it comes to matching your imagination a lot of it can be improved by drawing in other styles you vibe with. My problem is I just have to git up ‘an doo it!

That is probably because you don't imagine them as thorough in your head as you might think. Most of the time, we think we have it all figured out inside our heads already. But then we get to drawing or sculpting and realize that what we thought was a really detailed and bold construct in our head was nothing but a vague idea. The struggle comes from pushing through, and work on that thing UNTIL it looks like that what you wanted. This means working through the concept and iteration process as well as getting execution right. It's tough and not a one shot. YOU have to put in the WORK. Not put it down instantly. This common idea comes from the fact that we don't want to put in the effort and jus want to put a masterpiece down and call it done.(Lazyness, Excuse) This is not what art is about. Also don't be stubborn and allow it to change if you start to see flaws and the changes would be for the better. You will be surprised in the end, how often it comes out EVEN BETTER than you would have ever expected in our head.

the reason I suck at art is because its feels more like a talent then a skill. I know people keep shoving in my face that its a skill but to me it doesn't feel that way.

I've spend 2 days digitally painting this portrait for a "draw this in your style challenge" and come to realised I suck as an artist and suck even more at dynamic poses, beautiful background, cars, objects, food, hands etc. And can only draw traditionally with my fantasy characters standing in a 3/4 view in a static pose all black and white.. *16 year olds artist at this point can draw better than me and be more successful*

its not something to be learned during a day, just to adjust your muscles to draw sharp straight lines takes around a month, let alone the other parts, so 2 days is like expecting to feel satisfied with 2ml.

I'm honestly afraid too. As much as possible, I try my best to keep myself deadset on a goal that I want to pursue. But even then, I'm just beginning to find "self improvement" or any of these sthick super corny. And, yeah. I also made up my mind that I would basically just off myself if things don't go as planned or when I didn't achieve what I want to be. It's fine right? At least I tried my best, or I'm I weak?

I absolutely love your videos and am watching all of your recent uploads right now! I was wondering if you can make a video for people who struggle with values/light and shadow. My mistake is, I've been drawing a long time but light and shading were always hard for me (I struggle to imagine where it falls on forms) and I just gave up when I was younger.. leaving my drawings looking pretty mediocre. Now I'm trying my hardest to learn how to but the struggle is real! :)

Personally I think the fuzzy lines are a person’s preference. It doesn’t downsize how good the art is.

Right. I'm still not buying this. To me I wouldn't leave it as a final piece since I would ink over it so I don't understand why many artists are against this. Do what what makes you draw better. There are no rules in art.

Good video. Can I ask a newbie question? How come illustrators always draw their initial rough under drawings in a different coloured pencils. And does it make a difference what colours your use?

They do that because when you scan it in the blue lines don't show up on the computer

Jayson Bossuet thanks that’s interesting... Do scanners really not pick up blue lines? Guessing they put it on a setting that doesn’t see blue? Also he’s done these drawing on his iPad so he doesn’t have to scan it, guessing he’s done it in blue out of habit from drawing on layout paper. ☺️

It makes the inking part way easier. If your initial sketch is drawn in black and you have the habit of making a lot of lines, then, when you need to clean the line art or ink, it can be a bit confusing

For this video I did it so each layer was easy to distinguish from each other.

Now mostly done (and why I do it) - to distinguish between layers (sketch, tighter sketch, inks) but traditionally used in comic art because the light blue would just become invisible in the high contrast Xerox scanners of the 90s. So you could ink right on top of your blue sketch and then scan/submit it as just the inks
