DUDE - This is great. I know one of your recent videos you mentioned needing a break, and honestly this shows this shows the results of what can come from being kind to yourself and stepping away to take care of your own life. Looking into art history techniques and apply it to modern day miniature painting, Bravo! Not only is this a great tutorial but also a great little art history lesson.

I absolutely love soft shading! When I think of Renaissance style, sfumato is a defining feature. That mini turned out excellent!!! I’ve only recently tried underpainting on miniatures for some reason, despite doing it on canvas, and the things one can learn from varying ones approach when you’ve “just been doing this” for a while are awesome and very worthwhile.

This looked really good, you easily could have stopped before glazing in your base colour and edge highlighting, but those things also added a nice touch. This video showed how this technique could be used to do an easy, intermediate, AND expert paintjob. I've done similar stuff but i could never explain it to someone else as well as you did. I also learned new ways to do it better thanks to you. 👏

Great insightful video. Will I use it in most of my painting. Probably not as not of it is in 15mm where high contrast is very important and soft gradients wash out the model. However, I will add this to my bag of tricks when my models are much larger, usually between 25mm to 120mm.

@totallycarbon2106
@totallycarbon2106 4 месяца назад
This is awesome! Very fun way to transpose a traditional oil painting technique into acrylic miniature painting. But maybe to take this a step further you could skip the translation and try paint a miniature with oils? That way instrad of glazing you block out your colours and blend in the brush, would be interesting to see if it works!

Underpainting aka Grisaille probably better using satins tbh the matt finish texture is very grainy that's how its matt on dry. Do all in satins or gloss and then fix with gloss varnish this Id do in the process before (10;40 in the vid). do other fishing steps (starting at 10:40 in the vid) then seal with Matt / or / Satin varnish to complete. Nice paint job. I would use speed paints with these techniques or well, inks (close enough for government work) or make your acrylics like oils with "Newsh" or closer to a glaze with retarder and thinner and not so much just water (to avoid stain lines) .
