it's just so weird that almost no big channels are giving this wash range proper reviews when just about everyone agrees that their regular paints are top tier. I'm certainly glad that you guys took the time to check them out!

Great video. The medium is supposed to be a mix of 1 part normal paint (assuming pro acryl) to 4 parts medium to create a glaze and 1 part paint to 4 parts medium to 4 parts water to create a wash. Would be good at some point if you did a compare against the pre-done wash vs the above.

My guess for the old GW colour is ... Blue! I recently bought 10 pro-acryl paints, and decided to base all my painting on them for a while. I was done for a bit after fighting GW's awful pots and inconsistent paints, plus a real but frustrating go at making oils work (pro tip, they don't!). Pro-acryl is a revelation, they're amazing!

That black wash looks great for panel lining. I'd love to see a side by side of some off black paints from different ranges that would work well with a panel line or contrast wash. I feel like that's something I'm always looking for to do a good fast clean black, and unfortunately Nuln Oil Gloss has gone away. My go to for a long time was Secret Weapon soft body black over the Flames of War German Grey spray, but I've finally used up that old pot.

The flesh wash is part of my ultimate flesh recipe. It is so subtle against their different flesh colors, that it allows for a LOT of variation by doing it in multiple layers, adding in a touch of magenta, and then mixing it with layers going up. The properties of the wash work perfectly, and you can choose how intense you use it just by doing multiple layers - which means it you can get it exactly where you want over and over which is exactly what I need a flesh color to do.

Thanks for this. I haven't been able find a black wash I like as much as the original Citadel one, this looks perfect. I do miss the old chestnut wash too, it had such a rich warm tone that was great for wood and leather. I am getting back into painting after years away and on a tight budget, so Army Painter have been good basis for my collection but Pro Arcyl are going to be creeping in. Their Titanium White is so fluid, yet covers so well. Your channel has made a massive difference to my dry brushing technique too, so thank you for that too.

I agree the black has been the best out of the three and after GW changed Nuln oil, it’s properties really only take affect in the recesses and no longer leaves a filter like it used to with a regular brush. Pro Acryl seems to leave more of a filter over flat surfaces and using their proprietary mixing medium you can play around with different consistencies until you find a mix that works for you. The directions which are not on the bottle or at least they’ve been updated for using the medium is for glazing he suggests for parts medium to one part paint and if you want to turn it into a wash you do for parts, medium one part paint, and then simply asked for parts water. And I’ve heard you can use this with their transparent paints to achieve somewhat of a contrast. Paint sense you’ve got the translucency, and now you’ve changed the viscosity so that it has the four parts medium to act as a glaze in the four parts water to act as a wash, which is kind of what contrast paints do. These directions, or given for their pants I haven’t tried adding it to their washes. Flash wash is good and it’s more of a reddish brown little on the stronger side but the brown is my least favorite because it just doesn’t seem to do much. I was hoping for something like an Agrax earthshade, but instead, he acts more like GW’s new Nuln Oil, except it’s Brown.

The fact that the obsession with slightly differently formulated paints (which consist of pigment/medium/flow improver/etc) and yet noone goes out and makes them from scratch to their liking and instead are tied to brands and their "formulation" is one of the more annoying aspects of miniature painting.
@PhD777

@@joel6376 Well said.
@cablesalad3168
@cablesalad3168 Год назад
@@joel6376 Well, switching to oils did basically just that for me. There are hardly any oil washes on the market (which absolutely blows my mind), so I basically had to make all of them myself. Especially when AK Interactive secretly changed the recipe for Streaking Grime - and then lied about it, that's when I got fed up with their BS and started mixing my own. Sounds like a chore at first, but it's not difficult at all and once you get the hang of it, you get the EXACT color type that you want, even perfect oil wash versions of GW's acrylic washes. Oil washes are simply superior to anything else currently on the market in terms of cost, ease of use and control. It simply blows my mind seeing people pay premium prices for acrylic washes that even in their finest hour don't even hold a candle to anything oil based.

So a suggestion for Pin Washing and panel lining, even works for free hand if you use a thicker paint, but I like a fountain pen with washes thinned in medium to making sure my darkest color is as neat and tidy as I can make it...I like this bacuse you can do that kind of lining after the rest of the model is done and varnished incase you make a mistake or want to change the whole tone of the model with shadow lining colors, the varnish will also help the capillary right at the edges of those panel lines. Things you learn from other hobbies like Gunpla, I have noticed that set of hobbyist tend to take model prep and finishing stages to a level that Table Gamers would get a case of brain spaghetti to imagine doing to a whole army...but most of them don't paint except for panel lining and color correction...which they are by far more most amazing group at those techniques, especially considering the very bold and unforgiving colors their models are in...here have a pile of plastic that 4 distinct colors of White with flashes of some of the most saturated and vibrant colors we can think of...now go make your model kit look cool and not like a power ranger toy.

I have them, they're alright. three washes isn't much of a range. @Andy I use Abteilung 502 from AK Interactive, but I also use some Windsor&Newton oils, purples to be precise. The difference between them is minimal, especially when you use them to make washes. Abteilung 502 is said to dry faster when used as oil paints, but I haven‘t noticed a big difference to be honest. They both take ages to dry, which is both good and bad. You also need mineral spirits, since you can‘t mix oil colors with water. Be careful with mineral spirits, use gloves and make sure the room you paint in is well ventilated. Mineral Spirits has quite a pungent smell and might give you headaches over time, so wear one of those fancy sprayer masks. Also make sure to use cheap synthetic brushes, otherwise the mineral spirits will ruin any decent natural brushes like Artis Opus brushes. If you need tutorials I highly recommend Grimdark Compendium‘s content. He basically introduced me to this and fundamentally changed the way I paint miniatures. Biggest game changer in my 28 years of hobby! Seriously, I owe him! P.S. Don‘t lick any brushes you used with mineral spirits, like never ever!

Dear Artis Opus I would very much like to see a drybrushing video of Ultramarines. Yes, I know that that ultramarines have been done 1000 times before in all kinds of different styles but I have to honest that I really, really like your drybrushing style with the other chapters! I'm quite new to the hobby and currently not interested in jumping into the whole airbrushing thing yet (due to up-front costs), hence why I like your dry brushing since it achieves almost the same blending and highlighting. Since I'm new I have a hard time transferring the concepts (and paints) from your other chapter videos and a dedicated ultramarines video would thus be a really great help! Thanks for all the great content! PS, it would be great to see a video on the blending your do with drybrushing. The few I've tried and up with "hard" transitions between colours.

The brown wash feels like the odd one out. It looks either like a panel liner made for a very specific use, like you can see in the AK range, or as something that should be in a wave 2 of wash releases and not in the first wave where it would be more logical to have the essentials. Maybe it's just made for more capable painters than me but very very rarely I find myself wishing for a brown grey wash. Or maybe it just looks a bit different on screen vs how it looks IRL. But the flesh wash looks pretty nice, looks fairly similar to the Vallejo Game Color flesh wash though and that one is cheaper. It also seems like these washes demand a bit more skill then the average GW, Vallejo, and Army Painter washes.

Bah, Enchanted Blue was my guess too. Everything I painted back in those days was red over black undercoats (which looked as grim as you'd expect), I barely had any use for the blue colours!

They do a set of pro-acryl washes, and they're all pretty good. I'm surprised more channels don't mention pro-acryl as their paints are really well pigmented, and their metallics have impressive covering power. Their dark silver can cover anything, even if you water it down :)

@@ArtisOpus first I tried to do a 50/50 mix of water and wash. It went over ivory acrylic with a mix of crusaders skin from speedpaint 2.0. As it dried in the recesses it left small thin lines in the recesses as it dried and didn't really leave much of a line where it pooled. I tried this with the flesh wash as well as the black wash as they both did it. I also tried using it less thinned down, I don't remember the exact ratio but it did the same thing. I am new to painting so I was just teasing different stuff and not sure why I got this result. Did I let it pool too much? Or add too much water.

Are black washes meant to add more of a detail? Or giving it that “battle damged” look?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus Год назад
They don't have one singular use, you could use them to darken or shade areas, blackline between details, glaze, lots of stuff! The black is quite soft, so it really opens things up (especially adding other stuff to it, and using it's wonderful properties).

looks good but ill be honest tough, why not just oil oils for washes? it looks better, you have a much longer working time - you cant really screw it up once you know the basics, price is about the same. i dont understand why oils are not the standard for washes, it is easier than acrylic washes - the only downside is that they are toxic so just dont lick your brush
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus Месяц назад
A lot of people prefer to use acrylics, especially if you're doing small processes, and not bulk-army batching. I don't think the chemical concerns some have are warranted, but I do get wanting to just use the same water and stuff you use with your acrylic paints. Oils are incredible, enamels, all that stuff! Keep your eyes peeled for some making an appearance soon :)

In all honesty, you guys really need a brush maintenance video or series of videos on how to care for your brushes. As expensive as they are people should really have a quick resource to check on how to care for them. Another is what paints are best for your drybrushing techniques as not all paints are created equal in terms of how they drybrush.

I think it's really insulting that companies producing and selling their paints leave it to the customer to "try them out and experiment". THEY should be the ones doing full blown tutorials and offering better instructions on how their paints and mediums, ect all work and mix, ect. If they can't take their own business with that level of seriousness, respect and dedication why should I???

All three came out fairly glossy for me and stained the surfaces / coffee stained more than other washes. Basically everything I don't want from a wash
