Have you answered a work email during an important family event? Or taken a call from your boss while on vacation? According to behavioral scientist and Harvard Business School professor Ashley Whillans, "always-on" work culture is not only ruining our personal well-being - but our work, as well. She shares which bad habits are stopping us from getting what we need out of our free time and three practical steps for setting boundaries that stick.
The Way We Work is a TED original video series where leaders and thinkers offer practical wisdom and insight into how we can adapt and thrive amid changing workplace conventions. Visit go.ted.com/the... for more!

I've been working with my dad for 3 years. My dad is literally my boss. We always talked about work AFTER work. I was getting stressed out without noticing. At some point, i started smoking and staying outside of home during weekend. We started having a really bad relationship due to disagreements. I decided to move out from my parents home and things sorted out. I was able to run away from 24 hours working enviroment and now im good and we are good. Im happy that i have my own time and space even though im spending a lot of money for renting.

Your third point is really important. Work is important for us and for the overall society. However, working 5 days a week during 40 years or more is too much. 2 centuries ago, life span was much lower, so the comparison to old times is not relevant. I'll definitely say that youngsters want a better work/personal balance and more free time to enjoy life (and participate to the economy through consumption, as stores, cinemas and restaurants usually make most of their sales during the week end). That's why the best answer, in my humble opinion, is to propose to all workers the possibility to switch toward a 4 days week work, as some European countries are currently experimenting. This should concern blue collar jobs as well as white collar jobs, even in prestigious industries such as consulting and finance. This 4 days a week schedule can take different forms, and result in a reduction of the monthly salary, or not. Personally, I would easily accept a stimulating and challenging job with a 4 days per week schedule, even if I have a 20% lower compensation. It is worth it, and I'll be highly motivated in the long run.

These are all great tips if you already work in a place that's pretty reasonable and values you highly as a worker. Many people would be labelled as "slow" or "lazy" or be told they need to "say yes more" if they did this. Great if you can do this without threatening your job though, but I wouldn't say typical.

This is ideal and the science is sound. But do be aware that you can easily be replaced by someone who IS prepared to do the extra hours, because there's a million people for your corporation to choose from to step right into your shoes. This is the reality. The culture of fear and insecurity instilled in us by our leaders of commerce/industry needs to be addressed to feel safe enough to put in boundaries on our personal time.

Just because someone else has no self-worth and doesn’t care about working off the clock doesn’t mean employers ought to be enabled in that. Eventually word will spread about that abusive workplace and no one will work there so then the business will collapse. The job itself and customer satisfaction doesn’t happen without happy employees. See Wal-Mart as a prime example.

Oh my Lord!!!! I am really grateful to this Ma'am for the video about optimizing the working process. While I was watching this video, I found the answer to why Russians are so sad and aggressive. It is very simple - merely they don't know what means to relax in their day-offs and vacations - their minds are always stuck in the issues of regulating their everyday activities, handling everything just in time (with yellings, swearing, and nervosity). In brief, the ability to relax and distract yourself in your spare time - is one of the real guarantees of your success. And hello to Adam Grant with his "languishing" and his tips about changing mindset))))

I had a boss that expected me to answer instantly to text messages at ALL hours. If I didn't respond instantaneously they'd proceed to spam text and call me multiple times. One day I had awful cramps on a day off and was taking a nap for two hours. I woke up to ten texts and multiple calls. Needless to say I put my two weeks in the next day. I can't think of anything that is that urgent in a non-emergency that can't be left until work hours. I think in the hiring process we need to be interviewing the supervisor as well. Find out if they implement any of these rules in their own lives. If not, the job is not worth it imo.

I wholeheartedly agree with the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Work-life balance is of paramount importance in today's fast-paced world. Employers must recognize that it directly impacts their employees' well-being and overall job satisfaction. Striking a balance between work and personal life is crucial for mental and physical health, productivity, and job retention. Employers should actively support their workforce in achieving this equilibrium by implementing flexible schedules, promoting remote work options, and encouraging time-off policies. When employees can maintain a healthy work-life balance, they are more motivated, engaged, and better equipped to contribute to their organizations' success.

Maintaining a work life balance for a long time is accomplished similar to setting any other new goal, you develop a new habit by practice and self discipline. You cannot rely on doing it when you feel motivate, because motivation is inconsistent, but discipline is steady. Build the habits of balance by practice. What you will realize after some time with being consistent is that your new habits are getting you consistent results. Stick with it, or you might quit just before you win.

Interesting talk. However, planning your weekends and time off seems too strict for free time and relaxation. How about taking a different approach by changing our mindset? I think if we would view our time off from a different perspective, i.e. deserved relaxation time, quality time for oneself or quality time with friends and family, then we'd go about more relaxed and/or happily with our relaxation time than if we plan it (and worse would be if we don't follow the plans we set for our relaxation time and feel bad due to a job not accomplished!), you know what I mean?

When I watched this movie, it was my teacher who said:" We have a class that says 3 rules for better work-life balance" for our next class. So I got this. For me, I think it seems too hard to make it true because if your country's work culture is 996, it is one style of 9:00 am we go to the office, and 21:00 we go home, the worst is people have to work 6 days a week. Totaly 72 hours a week for these people you know. Someone adapts to the situation, the people got the gain thing. People never know they have no money, and they just have time, what a bad life for him. How do you think so?

Dropping something last minute that could have been handled earlier is NOT an emergency. People don’t need to be rewarded for their failures to plan including clients who didn’t bother to pay for services they knew they needed but waited until the last second to try getting. Unless you’re a medical provider or work in a utility company (where you know the requirements before taking that job), it’s not an urgent matter to get a cup of coffee or be made to act like the owner for zero equity.
