Sand Dunes: 'They Protect us, Let's Protect Them'
Dunes are also incredibly popular with us for all sorts of fun things like picnics, camping, running and walking, jumping and sliding. So much activity. But despite dunes being really tough and protecting us, they are also very fragile. The grasses that bind dunes in place are actually not suited to being walked on. They are not like grass in your garden, or on a sports field - those grasses have been developed over time to withstand us using them over and over again. Dune grasses and plants, though, die back very quickly with human trampling. The sand is then free to be blown away, and what looks like ‘coastal erosion’ is actually human erosion!
So, they need or help - “Let’s Protect Them”
Where possible enjoy the beach rather than the dunes - giving the dunes time and space to grow and repair themselves naturally
In healthier dunes keep to marked pathways and designated picnic and official camping areas, respecting messages on local signage - these are often the result of local communities volunteering efforts.
The campaign launch of the #ProtectOurDunes, was officially launched on Friday the 25th of June 2021 to coincide with World Sand Dune Day and will run until September 2021; highlights the importance of conserving these vital coastal habitats around the world.
