its not silicon carbide. it's white alumina. and it's not middle of the road. it's a specially use line. the SS are softer yet wear wear with a hard rubber feel to them. they are for finishing and polishing. for instance, large bevels. none of these stone is "above" the othr, just different used. the traditional are soakers. the chosera are all around and high end and these SS are considered "specialty" or finishing stones. great for razors. very gentle stones. they can work even dry. don't try that on a chosera or traditional. they're great for strop replacement as well. the soft resin binder is what makes these amazing. they have "give" kinda like leather does. so they leave a very fine finish. that 400 is no doubt just as fine as many 1k stones. The higher end ones are just as fine as 30k shatons. actually i like the 12k ss more than the 30k shaton.

Here in Mexico, people use whetstone grits as low as 150, 90 or 240.

I would agree with what you're saying and how you're using it. This stone wasn't what I expected when I got it; I thought it would be roughly as aggressive as other 400s, and it's actually a good bit slower than that. I've heard people say it's comparable to an 800. So if you want to reset a bevel fast, it's not that. But for touchups that needs more than a 2000, say, or for cleaning up a coarser knife's work, or for sharpening a relatively thin, high-end knife you want to be careful with, that's probably where it shines.

Chosera means Super cera(mic) stone...not means there are 2 different stone quality. Later on it called pro stone instead of chosera. Ninawa does made a lower grade and cheaper stone for home use..it is smaller and shorter compared to Chosera (same size as other "casual" japanese stones)

i think i soaked a super fine super stone, and then proceeded to sharpen and gouge it, never bothered flattening or using it again. never happened with my shaptons but maybe it would make it rather easy to flatten it while still being nice for polishing without soaking.

After trying more stones I have come to dislike the super stone line. I have owned and used 3 (800,5000,12000). The 800 is more like a slow cutting 2000 grit stone. The 5000 leaves an excellent polish but I prefer the harder feeling of the Chosera 3000 or even very hard like the Shapton pro 5000. The 12000 is ok I guess but overkill for knife use. All 3 had serious load up issues as well. In my humble opinion I think the extra price for the Chosera is well worth it. Especially the Chosera 800, 1000, 2000, and 3000.

I know this is an old video but I have a question. I know you've used your share of water stones. Have you ever used a Naniwa Pro Gouken Korouto 1k stone?

Saying it's "middle of the road" is EXTREMELY MISLEADING and misinforms your less educated viewers. I basically expect nothing but misinfo from new media on youtube tho, so it what it is. This stone is not "middle of the road" it's a specific product line for a specific purpose and it's very high quality TOP of the line item for what it is. And what it is is a line of splash and go FINISHING AND POLISHING STONES. That's what super stones are. Super finishing/polishing stones. These stones finish much higher than their stated grit rating. The finest one in the line, the 12k, is more like a 20k or 30k, when compared to other products on the market and it's an excellent finishing stone for mirror finishes or razors. The stones are softer with a gummy rubbery very nice feeling and feedback but actually wear nice and slow. They are true splash and go stones and even work dry. The Chosera line is professional line because it's targeted to professionals not home uses. Those are general purpose stones, hybrids cuz while theyr not soakers like the traditional line, they do have the vibe of the soakers and take quite a bit of water. The traditional stones aren't "low end" they're high end soakers. They are excellent quality soaking stones for general use, but especially for Japanese kitchen cutlery. The super stones aren't middle. They're high end splash and go finishing stones. And the chosera isn't "top of the line' its a product designed for professional use. cmon man.
