If youre sitting at your desk all day in a cold climate washing your T-Shirt every few days might be enough. But as a hard working guy I sometimes got white salt build up on the back of my shirts after half a day, not to mention how it looks and smells in the evening. For most people T-Shirts are underwear 1 wear=1 wash. To truely test a shirt it should be washed at least 50-100 times. Thats just a year wearing it 2 times a week. That being sad i really appreciate what you do. I still got old Fruit of the Loom cotton Shirts that are under 5€/Piece still holding up after 5 years and hundreds of washes. Sure they have some holes and are a little out of shape, but still can be worne. Buying (combed) ring-spun cotton is more important for the feeling, looks and durability then just the price tag. I find my Patagonia Responsibilli-Tee shirts are holding up pretty good after lots of washes and use, better then my pure cotton ones anyway, and its completely recycled material.

@miyounova
@miyounova 4 года назад
Saying in good shape but then talking about holes makes me think we don't have the same definition of wearable and quality. Also, no, t-shirts aren't underwear for most people, as many, many, many people in the western world don't have physical jobs, and there are also some physical jobs (delivery for ex) you'll find in cities, where most people live, have uniforms. A 5$ t-shirt is unethical, but in terms of quality, it will not be there; it will pill quickly, there will be loose threads and the seams will "turn" (you notice it when you fold clothing for example).

This is why about 90% of my clothes were bought secondhand: I can see how they hold up to laundering, I’m keeping them out of a landfill, and I can buy much higher quality than I could justify spending for. I only use the dryer for towels and bedding, so that contributes to the longevity of my clothes.

@@xXcangjieXx For sure. I have a fleece Old Navy zip-up hoodie that I've owned for 14 years, and was in my sister's possession for at least 5 years before I inherited it. It is definitely showing age (it's lost some form and the big logo has faded a bunch, but all the stitching is still somehow intact), doesn't block the wind anymore, and doesn't have the flappy part of the zipper, but good god is it comfortable and great for warmth as a layer under a jacket or coat. The zipper is actually the best part in my opinion, since it's still buttery smooth and can easily be zipped despite not having the flappy bit (what's that part even called? I don't know!). Meanwhile, I rarely wear my 5 year old fleece Old Navy zip-up jacket because it just doesn't feel as comfortable. It looks better because it has much less wear, but I go for comfort more than style.

I have been slowly transitioning my wardrobe to be completely slow fashioned/forever cloths. I'm also a knitting so a few of the pieces I have in my wardrobe I have made myself (or by my mum). I've considered doing a deep dive into the sustainability of yarn especially since I have a large yarn collection with some fibers being sold by local dyers on Vancouver Island (they source the blanks themselves or spin the yarn themselves) and copious amounts of cheap acrylic yarn (ooof) that I still have from when I first learned to knit as a kid. I'm working through my wool stash now that we're in isolation and am considering favouring vegan knitting sourcing only plant based materials, but this can be very challenging considering that there are not many high quality plant based yarn options. Seems a little off topic, but your video got my thinking about the ethics of sourcing materials. Knitters are always thinking about slow fashion.
@marissamalone621
@marissamalone621 4 года назад
As long as you're finding the right source, wool yarn is good! Sheep need to be sheared to stay healthy, so as long as they're well cared for, wool isn't a cruel material.

You can just use cotton, linen and bamboo but they won’t be as warm as possible... just try to buy fibers that you know where they come from and we can also help animals, plants and the planet.
@cecilyerker
@cecilyerker 4 года назад
Emily McD Why focus only on vegan sources? You don’t kill sheep to get wool, you give them a haircut. They NEED to be sheared because humans bred them to have no terminal hair length. If you don’t want to work through your stash of acrylic yarn, just list it for free on Craigslist or someplace similar.
@josephinewinter
@josephinewinter 4 года назад
you're inspiring me to try. In the old days, sheep were just kept for wool, it's a post-industrial-revolution thing that they're now bred for meat. A few small flock owners still only keep them for wool or as pets. It's like rescue ducks and hens as pets: their eggs are vegan approved, at least by vegans i know (I live in the deep countryside, it had many disadvantages, before covid19 closed all the city advantages like education, theatre, healthcare - now we're the lucky ones - but the payoff was access to fresh food, 'vegan eggs' etc)

I've bought plenty of cheap t-shirts from places like Walmart and Target because I'm not rich, but they start pilling almost immediately, like after one or two washes. This videos makes me want to buy a more expensive item of clothing knowing that I'm not only supporting a good cause, but my clothes would last and look better longer. To avoid pilling, wash it inside out. Never mix colors or fabrics. Never use temperature unless heavily stained. Always try to avoid Short cycles. Use little soap, acccording to the stain level. Try to avoid american toploaders w. machines, they tend to be harsh on your clothes and be water and electricity guzzless. Being careful means longer lasting goods.

I wear sweaters and jeans lots of times intermittently without washing, but t-shirts? No way. Armpits are one of the few smelly parts of the body, therefore anything that touches them can only get one use before going into the laundry, just like underwear and socks. Doesn't matter that I've had a shower and used deodorant, it will smell if I put it back on on day 2. Everything else can be worn lots of times without issues imo. If I wear a looser blouse with a t-shirt underneath, I'll switch out the t-shirt and wear the blouse again for example.

Now i try to limit physical stuff in summer especially outdoors but at the very least i need to maintain my garden by turning on taps taking out compost picking ripe stuff. So at the very leaat i still change into clothing excluding pjs twice a day and shower twice. Like i dont think people understand what its like to step out of the shower and be inmediately covered in sweat within a minute like just staying cool and alive in summer is a full time job.

While over washing definitely wears out your clothing, so does under washing. The bacteria builds up in the fabric and eats away at the fibres. That's why the crotch is usually the first part to blow out on jeans. I have 2 identical pairs of jeans. I wore the first pair every single day and only washed them every 2-3 months, and by the 1 year mark they were toast. Holes everywhere. The exact same pair also worn every day but washed every 3-4 weeks are holding up much better as I am now approaching the 1 year mark. The dye has faded more for sure, but the fabric has held up stronger.

I do think there need to be affordable sustainable options. I know there have been times in my life that I can't afford more than a $6 t-shirt and I know that I can't shell out $30-$50 on a t-shirt. There is a lot of privilege surrounding sustainability and it can be difficult to balance living on a budget and buy sustainable clothing. I don't think shaming people about it is productive and I'm glad you mentioned at the end that there are options. I think drawing attention to the brand and not the people who buy them is important. It is not the consumer's fault that there are no options, it is the companies' fault. If individuals can't afford the sustainable option, it won't be made corporations determine what is available and affordable. Excellent video, as always, and I look forward to your next one!

The second and specially the third t-shirt seem to be a cotton-polyester blend. I know they are supposed to be 100% cotton, but labels often lie. That non uniform grey color is made by dying cotton-polyester fabric, so that the different fibers get different tones of a color, giving it that textured effect (at least that's how you get that effect on cheap fabric). Also, that would explain the pilling as blend fabrics have a tendency to pill more quickly.

About the price, I'm from Brazil, at this moment I'm wearing an old shirt (about twelve years), I paid at the time about R$ 7,00 (less then $ 1,50) . At that time I used to live in a city close to the biggest textile industry centers in the country, it could be impossible to buy the same shirt for the same price in other place, but the point is, the shirt was made in the same factory that made shirts for the main basic shirts company in Brazil, they use to sell their shirts for about R$ 40 (about $8), and this is a quite expensive shirt in here. The same materials and design, the only difference was the brand, I don't think the workers were paid more for the more expensive shirt... In this case they where bad paid workers but they had some rights, there's a lot of reports on big fashion companies using slave labour (yes, slave labour in 2020), they basically offered jobs to immigrants and they ended up in closed buildings with sewing machines working 16 hours a day and being paid in food. To make one dollar shirts to be sold for fifteen. Buying from a Patagonia-like company could be the best to avoid those terrible things but $50 is impossible to most people. Clothes are hard, I hate that something as basic and necessary as a shirt can be so easily terrible...

+1 for Rapanui. I have 2 Patagonia vests and a jumper which have all bobbled with my work backpack. I have a Rapanui vest and it's bobble free for less than half the price of a Patagonia vest. That said the Rapanui vest is 100% cotton Vs the Patagonia stuff being a cotton & polyester mix. I know some folks with t-shirts and button up shirts from Rapanui who love them too. My only gripes with Rapanui are limited options for their plain vests and their jumper sizing is awful, so baggy on the chest it gave me bat wings.

One quick note: you should wash new clothing before you wear it for the first time. Fabrics are coated with a material called "sizing." The exact composition of the sizing material will vary from brand to brand, but sometimes it has noxious chemicals in it, which would not be good to have next to your skin. (I personally also wash thrifted/consignment clothing before I wear it for the first time - I think thrift/consignment shops sometimes or often use a pest repellent or sanitizing spray on clothing items before they are sold.)

I wash my T shirts every time I wear them, I may wear them twice, otherwise they smell. I just use cold water and hang/air dry. No way I'd wear a T shirt 6 times without washing, especially if I use it carrying a backpack. Maybe you don't smell or sweat much... I wonder if I had outdoor access and hang a worn T shirt for hour in the sun. it may solve the issue.

Wears shirt everyday for 30 days: "A $6 shirt doesn't last long." A $6 shirt worn once a week/biweekly washed every few wears will do just fine. In theory, if worn for 30 days consecutively, it can last 30 weeks or even 60 if worn bi weekly which makes the cost of a T-shirt 6-12$ annually as opposed to a $50 shirt. Now go spend $10 extra and buy 6 $6 shirts and you've got shirts for every day of the week (and you don't have to wear them consecutively). I like the video and I must admit that I've never given much thought to the production of the clothes I wear. Not very fashion savvy. Not trying to be contentious, just heard that framing and respectfully disagreed with it.

Love your videos but one thing I would have liked to see here is a "before" view of the 3 t-shirts so that we could get a more visual decay of the shirts. Actually, it would have been cool to see the shirts after every 10 wears to see the progression of wear and tear because to be honest all 3 shirts looked to me like they help up pretty well (minus the seams coming apart) and the fit of the cheap one doesn't actually look that bad.

Nice to hear that you let the air dry. I rarely use the dryer for clothing. They wear better when washed in cold water and hung to dry. Personally, I hand my shirts to dry on a hanger in the bathroom. When my daughter was about 3 or 4 I did this with her clothing that was made of a material similar to t-shirt material. I found that the colors did not fade and they did not bead. That was really nice. I did not dry because while I had my own washer/dryer it really was much easier to hang than to go outside into the garage and deal w/ laundry. I wish more people would do that.

As you mention that the everlane shirt feels 'lighter', it might be that the thread count is way less (the amount of cotton threads per square centimeter), being a thinner t-shirt. Often this kind of information is not enclosed in the tag or online with less for clothes, but I have noticed old fast fashion shirts to be thinner and therefore ripping easier than thicker, higher quality shirts. One way I was thinking about to estimate the thread count is to compare the shirts by their weight, divided by their measurements. Maybe this could be something to add in future videos when comparing clothes with the same "ingredients" (as you mentioned, all 100% cotton).

One point that is kinda interesting to talk is that fashion industry always told us that we need to have a lot of clothes to have option. I know a lot of people that have a gigantic wardrobe full of fast fashion, crappy items. Instead of having 3 great shirts - for example - they have 10 really bad that doesn’t look or feel as nice as those 3 would. Same you can apply for everything. Capsule wardrobe is something really versatile and sustainable as well, you just need to be creative. I changed my wardrobe to a capsule one and I didn’t buy a new clothe item in a year and I don’t miss it. Less is definitely more.

My country in southeastasia is one of the garment factories that supplies many brands in Europe or usa... Beside vietnam, thai, etc.. The labor cost (sewing) on cheap t-shirt for walmart is about 7 cents usd. If I want to make custom t shirt ( i go to local print designer) it will cost 5 / 6 usd in better quality from that walmart one. From personally hand picked the plain t shirt until the print done by the artist. The seam is like your 30$ with better quality on the cloth. But its not stretchy like patagonia does. If this t-shirt goes to local distro, the price will be at 30$..
