I have been cleaning up the shop. In this process, I have made a few shop upgrades. The first project is lowering the bottom shelf and putting on new wheels on the worktable. The new wheels will take more weight. The lower shelf will allow me it store the pantorouter on it. The second project is making a new foot for the grinder stand I built last Fall. I pulled off the leveling feet I had on there and attached a single piece of 2 inch angle iron. This looks a lot better. The third project is to demonstrate some of the alternate uses of the new shop stair. One is to use it as a step stool the reach higher places in the shop. Another is to use it as a platform for bringing heavy items into the shop.

Frank, I really love the way you approach your projects! I love that everything isn't completely thought through and you have to change things as you go! It reminds me of how I work. My favorite was when you had to cut the end of your kids bathroom cabinet. I appreciate the honesty and reality, it helps me understand I'm not the only one that has to roll my eyes and do it all over again!

I love every video you make, Frank. I swear that you could shoot video of nothing but you changing light bulbs and I'd have that sucker expanded to full screen, in 1080p, and I'd still lean forward to catch every detail. Some great ideas in this one. Thanks!

I find it amazing that one of the reasons you chose this house to move into was the fact that you could build a woodworking shop there - and it's just a hobby. If I said to my gf (actually I'm trying to now) into buying a house just for my hobby - it has a massive seperate building - she would tell me to go naff off. You have a very loving/tolerant wife :D

I'm pretty sure this is what he does for a living. He just doesn't show a lot of his commissioned projects for (I assume) privacy. His commissioned projects that he does show (like his Jelly Studio stuff and his Japanese restaurant projects) are on here because those pieces are on display in public anyway.

We bought a new house and moved just so that I'd have room to build a stand alone shop. I don't think it's that unusual, lots of people build pole barns to store RV's, boats, ATV's etc. Not to speak for Mr. Howarth, but I'm fairly sure hes an architect and does woodworking as a hobby.
@frankmakes

My lovely wife wanted to move and I had only one request, it had to have a place for a shop. Mostly we moved for the schools, we looked at a lot of houses that would have been easer to have a shop.

"I have no idea how you manage to be such an incredible woodworker" Time. You don't just pick up a piece of timber and suddenly start making craftsman quality furniture. You have to fail time and time and time again until you start getting it right. Also having some quality tools is a *big* help. Poor quality tools will frustrate you no end. I've only had a dedicated workbench (and then only 600*1200) and some decent tools 9Makita) for about a year and a half, and my work has advanced probably 200% over the rubbish I used to make. It's still pretty terrible, but it's now of acceptable quality that I don't feel the urge to junk it and go watch TV instead. :D

I find that looking at furniture online and watching RU-vid videos of people making stuff really helps spark my creativity. Just find ways to get inspired, and next thing you know, you'll be more upset about having too many projects you want to do.

Last project of the three is B.E.A. YUUUUT-I-FUL. Poetry in motion! Love your videos Frank - even more so, now I have an appreciation of your speech situation. It was really hard to nail the rhyme behind the hypnotic rhythm of your past voiceovers. The narration has always been awesome, btw - but certainly freed up and became more fluid since your "I like to make stuff" piece. You've become a better producer as a result. I always look forward to every vid from you. Your design aspect is envious. Richie

Re the speed of your drill press for drilling steel: a simple formula relates cutting speed to rpm. It is: rpm = 4 x cutting-speed / diameter. (cutting-speed in fpm, diameter in inches) This can be a workpiece diameter wrt lathe rpm or equally, the rpm of a drill press vs drill diameter. For mild steel cut with HSS tools, the cutting speed is 100 fpm. It looked like you were drilling maybe a 5/16" hole in the angle, so you should run the drill at 1280 rpm or less. You weren't pushing the drill hard at all... I'm with the rest of your commenters - I really enjoy your work.

I would get a bench top table saw and build a 4x8 or 4x6 table around it out of 2x4s and mdf. I would get a cordless hand drill, I use mine constantly. I would hit garage sales for wrenches and sockets and pliers and screwdrivers, you can't have too may screwdrivers. garage sales are great for this kind of stuff. Then some kind of chop saw. A bench top drill press and a 14" band saw and you probably just over grand and that's if its all new. I would follow the adage that you should buy the best quality tools you can afford. putting down some money on a tool that won't last was a waist but spending a little more and getting something that will do what you want it to for a long time is an investment.

Danilo SubMOA Just my two cents. So many people who view other's shops and see their awesome collection of tools are overwhelmed by their investment......................but few realize NOBODY acquired their collection over-night. In my case, it has taken me a lifetime to assemble these tools. Like most, I started off modestly and have added / replaced tools as finances allowed. I'm a big fan of a yellow legal pad and a freshly sharpened Ticonderoga #2 pencil. Make lists of what you would like and then try and prioritize that list. I really like how Frank has brought new life to older tools. Be patient, (a critical skill for woodworking anyway) and realize the joy is in the journey. Have fun.

Hey Frank I wanted to let you know a little trick for drilling through steel. If you dont already have one go to Harbor Freight and pick up a cheap set of vernier calipers. Measure the drill bit you are using and use this formula. 4 x cutting speed of the material of your drill bit (divided by) the diameter of your drill bit. Most drill bits you have would be high speed steel so if you were using a half inch drill bit. you would do 4x100(divided by).5 and get 800 rpm. (if you have any carbide drill bits your cutting speed would be 400) so you would do 4x400(divided by) .5 and get 3200 rpm. Just a helpful tip i thought you would find use in.
