Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Steve Lukather Licks From 2023. Toto's been on tour this year and I spotted a bootleg clip of Steve Lukather strutting his stuff live in a Toto-focused Facebook group, and decided to snag some of his impressive licks and expressive ideas for this episode - so let's dive in!
The licks/ideas for this lesson were pulled from an extended solo that Steve took during the song 'Kingdom Of Desire,' where he proceeded to pull out all of the stops. From smooth and flowing chromatic runs to speed-picking licks, tapping ideas, Hendrix-inspired phrases, and enough string bending and vibrato action to chew up your fingertips for days. So get ready, there are some great ideas hiding in this lesson!

When I heard the outro to Roseanna I became an instant fan. Super precise licks designed to sound reckless and out of control. Brilliant cat

Awesome. A lot of times when I’m jamming with another guitar player and I’m not sure what to add, I’ll do what I call “the Lukather method” which is to do those palm muted, single note riffs you’d hear on a lot of 80s pop and R&B albums. It’s nice to actually learn some actual Lukather lines! Thank you Sensei Dave!

Hey Dave. 10:06 "...there's only one Steve Lukather, for sure..." Yeah, that's right. And guess what: I have the same feelings for Luke. Lucky me, I met him several times and it's true that he is, aside from his phenomenal "everything" when it comes to music (playing various (!) instruments, singing, composing,...) a very very fine and humble person. I really should tell him someday "Hey Steve, I owe you so much...", simply because it's true. I can hardly measure how many hours Luke brought (and still brings...) joy, love & happiness in my life. Thanks Luke!!! And thanks, Dave! Really like this Video. Great job, great attitude, great playing. Thumbs up! All the best. Michael

First time I’ve ever heard of a chromatic slur, but it sounds so cool. And it’s amazing the way Lukather has absorbed the Hendrix vibe and feel and made it his own.

Lukather is a legend! David, do you think we could get a Three-For-All for Lee Altus of Heathen & Exodus? He may not be as popular as Kirk Hammett or Marty Friedman, but I think he’s just as talented and has a lot of cool solos and licks!

Always enjoy your Iessons. Steve, and Toto, were aII over the airwaves in their heyday and rightfully so. Monster guitarist. A guitarist I always admired was Atlanta Rhythm Sections Barry BaiIey, a master of melody and phrasing; should you ever feeI compelled I would Love to see you do Iesson on him. Thanks for aII you do.

Los Lobotomys is SICK!! I play the Candyman album in the car ever 2 days, the album is just amazing, especially his version of The Bomber. Used to play Party in Simon's Pants with a trio. Super tough tune to pull off. More Lukather, Dave!!

That first lick has that not so common, but very useful flat six you pulled up to sixth. It gives very nice tone. Also very good is to pull it down from flat six to fifth. It gives the same type of impression tonally.

That second lick sounds a bit like the Irish folk tune Women of Ireland as played by the Chieftains in the Kubrick film Barry Lyndon ( and Jeff Beck)!

Luke is the real deal. Even though Toto was too pop leaning to be on my regular listening rotation, they still were a great band. Hold the Line was a great rock tune, so they had some of my attention right from the very first day. Every person in that band was talented.

Wow. I've been marveling at his Kingdom of Desire solo spot since the start of this tour and have been lucky to witness it first hand in Windsor (thank you Journey for not coming there, LOL). First I thought that it's E ionian and a I - VII chord progression, but you are right, it's E minor because some of the notes he's playing are not in the E major scale. I think the best one is the version from Stockholm from last year and the one from Windsor is close second (I have it and can share it with you). I myself tried to play the Jeff Babko tune called "Journey Through"., that you can find here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3p7eKWQUB-o.html&ab_channel=925candyman

Lick 1 is basically E natural minor then modulating to E Dorian (the C to C#) right?
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons Год назад
That's a good way to see it, but I'd suggest to view the note 'C' as a poassing tone, so we're basically playing around in E Dorian. It's tricky to define things sometimes because you can view this stuff from so many angles/views, and it gets complicated really quickly! Thanks and good luck! ROCK ON!

I hope I’m not duplicating comments/posts? I tried to post a video of an absolute beast of a player playing an awesome solo at the end of Rosanna but when I check, it’s not posted 🤷‍♂️. Maybe there’s a delay? If so I apologize for blowing up your comments 🫣. He uses some signature Lukather licks plus mixes in improvised licks too! 🔥 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fxsim5l1XpY.html

Yes, this lesson is tuned down a half-step - just like Steve was in the live footage used in the lesson. Also, notice the tuning notice/image at the beginning of the video. If a video I create is in a different tuning for some reason , I always give viewers a head's up. Thanks!

Hey Dave! Thank for uploading this one! Do you have any insights about what Luke is doing here? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YaCFtEELNpo.html I feel like he is doing three bends on the 3rd string and he's releasing a pre-bend on the 2nd? Something on the lines of: bend(34d) bend(3rd) bend(3rd) release(pre bend on 2nd) The last bend on the 3rd was never released (I believe)
