@@QuinnTheChin I don't think he has bad intentions. The delivery could have been a little more refined, but the message is not negative.
@QuinnTheChin
@QuinnTheChin 4 года назад
@@TheMonrrou it's not overtly negative, but the entirety of it is a misunderstanding of the arguments surrounding toxic masculinity and, in general, what it means to be masculine. Masculinity is a loaded word and by demanding that boys be more masculine, we're implying that 'feminine' things are lesser. Women make up roughly 50%-- how are we supposed to discount that? (And that's to say that women are all feminine; they're not) Further, a lot of our masculine traits are determined be culture. The Iroquois, for example, were governed by women. Would they be saying that men had no room in their politics? Wouldnt their conceptions of 'femininity' (and masculinity) be very different? If we look at other cultures, it becomes painfully obvious that these things (masculinity and femininity) are culturally constructed, and if we're limiting the contributions of half the population, then isnt our culture wrong? Clinging to masculinity is ridiculous and the idea of "turning boys to men" through masculinity is contributing to a toxic culture, one that devalues the feminine, one that stupidly indoctrinates people with corrupted media and leaves us with garbage like this-- a dude trying to make up for his high voice with a beard and a rant about being a 'man' - a guy

I’m a strong, well educated, independent woman and I agree 100% with what you’re saying. Telling a 5 year old that they’re toxic is terrible, and will do more harm than anything. My father was a tough, old school man who worked his ass off for my brothers and me. He made me feel safe, confident, and loved. He also taught me how to fight off an attacker, shoot a gun, change the oil in my car, change a tire, and gave me a toolbox and a handgun when I got my first apartment. He showed my brothers how to be “real” men; good, strong, self sufficient men who treat their wives and other women with respect but don’t apologize for who they are. Boys need men around them. If it’s not their father then other men should step in. I wish everyone had a dad like mine.

Glad this wasn’t a rant about “toughening kids up” with what mostly could be described as breaking them down with bullying until they turn into bitter hateful angry people. I agree that kids in general need guidance in matters like this as otherwise they can be suddenly overwhelmed by the stresses of adulthood. I agree that without a positive male role model they can take the wrong path. My dad wasn’t about much when I was young but the father’s of my close friends were good role models who helped shape me into what I am today.

This is 100% accurate. I am a paraprofessional to a boy with a lot of anger issues, which therapists were claiming he was emotional unstable and put him on prescription drugs. After I began working with him, of course with a lot of patience because he was constantly angry and defiant, he matured and no longer needs meds or the help of his therapist to cope. He has no father and I knew that this had to be the root of his problem, with me by his side he felt like he had that leader there to guide him. He is now working hard in his studies and is taking his time to work on his low temperament. I've been a great help to this boy and we have developed the much needed Father/Son bond he desperately needed. Men aren't so bad in the world after all.

I just have to say, thanks. We need to speak the truth. I was hoodwinked Into thinking my masculinity was toxic for most of my life. It's only in my adult life did I actually realize how deeply I'd been programmed. It hurts you and stunts your growth as a man. Handicaps you even. But recovery is always possible. No matter how you've been traumatized or indoctrinated growing up. Follow your instincts. Seek answers and we get to actually find them.

Reminds me of how young male elephants without older male elephants ( killed off by poachers) will be more aggressive and destructive. I grew up without a father (in my case my father died, yet it has some of the same problems of just being neglected) what a burden that can be in the long run just trying to figure things out. Thank God for men who do for their sons in the way you've laid out. If someone brings a life into this world they owe them that much.

Lee Davenport I am not an elephant, I agree. There is differences. Though to learn from other forms of life is always possible. Besides I found it interesting and wanted to share it, seemed like a good spot to bring it up. And life has a way of programming us, I also agree then that I have programming to work through that may be harmful. In fact I agree very much that we (me too of course) can be hypnotized by many things, and believe things without qustion. Did I miss something here with regards a basic attitude or thought? I'm I being one sided? Maybe I sound like I'm saying we should trust blind comformity, just because it is more smiled upon by the group, more tamed? I like Confucius type respect for my elders, to a degree, yet I believe young Chinese began to be manipulated and pushed around unjustly by the tradition at some point. I try not to be black and white on life and there is always context to consider. Thank you for bringing this up, I think there is something there to consider.
@georgestacey9558

Lee Davenport I just want to add that my father died when I was young, he was from a world now gone, I'm 40, he died at 56 in 1987. Cancer. Be for he got real sick he was very hard on me, I believe I was carrying wood twice my sizes around the time I could walk, he was set to make me a man, he would beat on me for the smallest reasons and I spent a lot if time hiding beneath the bed and such. I was 8 when he passed, leaving his education (?) mid driff and me maybe damaged and confused, so I know education of that sort, even with good intention can do harm (you shouldn't beat on a child and one could die without completing the task of making one's son tough, if it is tough, to the brutal sides of life, leaving just a mess). Like wise I hate a billboard in our town of John Wayn which has the quote "I don't like a quiter son" because who knows how someone will take it and be ironically discouraged and estranged from the community instead of encouraged or inspired (another possibility to be fair). Someone paranoid, and broken may be effected by the sign in a way someone with a different circumstance maybe effected. I don't believe that is weak sentiment, but practical consideration, the world is a tower of Bable and real time understanding is always better then generic hype.

I know several school principles & teachers they have told me of the bedlam in their classrooms caused by laws & protocols made up by legislators & other functionaries that limit what they can do as discipline. Teachers are not allowed to touch that is restrain, no grabbing a hand or arm, no blocking a child's egress or access to anything, if the child is threatening to kill or throwing things the teacher has to clear the classroom & leave the child in that room to do what he wants. In one instance a child who was "relatively" calm in the morning was on a morning only school. The grandparents raising him got lawyers (one of their specialties) to make the school take him for the entire day. This boy (grade school)has threatened to kill & has chocked an aid & has access to his grandparents guns. If a child is this much of a problem he/she can be suspended or moved to another school but if he has been diagnosed with any mental or etc.. problem nothing can be done. The teachers in one district know a couple of teens that most won't be surprised if they come shooting. Then there is a recent shooter who was known by kids , teachers & police to be a threat but a local politician w/cooperating police chief didn't do anything about him because their policy was not to arrest or cause a record to be made for kids so as not to impede their way into college. The last one was in the news. This is the result of our "liberal progressives" trying to craft a perfect world. We know how that's turning out & then some wonder why there are all these shootings.

My wife and me lead a youth workout/mentoring ministry, we see all the time the effects of dadless families, abusive dads, dads that are around but don’t connect at all, etc. it’s heartbreaking. We also see the societies influence on the feminization of boys/men. That compounds the root problems that they are already struggling with. Be a positive influence in your social circles and communities. Sow money and/or time into positive, like minded organizations or ministries that help and mentor our kids/youth and young adults. Isn’t it weird that most of the things that considered as “manly” are merely the common sense of what people should do? For example being a good role model or teaching children how to be responsible. I believe there are misunderstanding of terms. Why would toxic masculinity mean something that is exteremely opposite of common senses?

I agree with this mostly. For some men, good men, this is good advice. The concern for me is... many men are “dads” , “mentors”, “leaders”, But they aren’t teaching good things. They are the ones setting bad examples and giving men a bad name... it’s not always just the media or a war on men though I do recognize that. I’ve watched my own dad firsthand and many of my friends fathers teach their sons how to treat women incorrectly, how to use aggression or status when it isn’t necessary or morally correct. Many dads from my generation are reactionary not proactive, or passive, not forthcoming. There are men who are there and are teaching... but they arent the dads who need to be real mentors and leaders. They need to go to real dad school. I think you are trying to make that a reality with your channel and I appreciate that. But there is a distinction. The problem isn’t just absent fathers, sometimes it’s incorrect or misled fathers.
