If you dig deeper into Muay Thai there are very interesting postures/guards mostly utilized by fighters from Golden Era. "Drakula" guard for example. MT is beautiful!
@drhkleinert3245
@drhkleinert3245 5 лет назад
I am not regular in MT but after i watch some good vids here i learned more about proper kicks and esp defense against kicks (and lots about ellbows) than in 40 years of Hapkido, Taekwon do and Modern Arnis before...so i say Dont mess with a Muay Thai Guy! And so i will train these moves in my own training of course...

Thank you for explicating on the elbows-out guard. I would always get frustrated when someone would tell me "hey, you're leaving your body exposed." Like, that's the point. I would also add that keeping your elbows flared out makes it much harder for your opponent to land hooks and kicks to the head, both of which are techniques that concern me a lot more than body shots.
@donkeytwoddle
@donkeytwoddle 2 года назад
It is the guard I use most, interspersed with a mid/long guard. What I've found is I like using pointy elbow blocks on the foot the most. Elbows in that position allows you to do a 'hulla hoop' silly looking jelly-loose hip motion(if that makes sense?); a wiggle just like when you loosen out your hips. So I can ropa-dope my body away from kicks and such. Being a wiggly target & there being unusual body target realestate; people throw their teaps and kicks deep into the spots your elbows usually cover. So you just return your elbows to that position with downwards & forwards force like you are elbowing their teap. Optimally I land elbow down&forwards on their toes or top bridge of the foot just as they drive it in. It'll f@#k their foot up bad. It can make me a pain to spar with, a much loved tool in the arsenal along with short inner-thigh knees in clinch & full-weight koala-resting/riding my opponent in clinch to drain them to shit.

Somluck Kamsing Somluck Kamsing (name used in the 1996 Summer Olympics) or Somrak Kamsing (Thai: สมรักษ์ คำสิงห์; RTGS: Somrak Khamsing; born January 16, 1973) is a Thai Muay Thai FIGHTER and Olympic gold medal-winning ** amateur boxer **. During the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, Kamsing lit the torch during the Games' opening ceremony. Kamsing was born in Khon Kaen. His older brother Somrot Kamsing also competed at the highest level as an amateur boxer. Muay Thai career At age 7, Somluck began training and fighting in Muay Thai. At 11, he moved to Bangkok to fight in the bigger stadiums. Prior to switching to amateur boxing he was viewed as one of the best fighters in the sport. He didn't compete competitively in Thailand after making the switch, but he did take up the occasional fight against foreign fighters.[2] In 2012 he made a return to the major boxing stadiums, not as a serious fighter, but to fight other semi-retired legends in hopes of attracting people to the sport. He beat fellow legend Jomhod Kiatadisak on October 4, 2012 at Rajadamnern Stadium in a fight with the largest ever side bet in Muay Thai, 5.27 million baht on the line.[3] They fought again in December 7, 2012 on the Lumpinee stadium birthday show. This time Jomhod Kiatadisak won by points. They fought third match with a 6 million baht side bet on February 7, 2013 and Somluck won again by decision.[4][5] However, he lost to American Nak Muay Chike Lindsay by unanimous decision in a modified Thai boxing Push Kick: World Stand Off in Pomona, California, on March 2, 2013.[6] Somluck fought to a draw with another legend, Yodwanpadet Sor Junlasen under special rules, at Rajadamnern Stadium on 2 April 2015. Somluck was only allowed to punch while Yodwanpadet could fight full Muay Thai.[7] THIS FIGHTER WAS A SIGHT TO SEE !!

I think Muay Thai has a serious issue with mobility out of fear of low kicks. Samart didn’t use the traditional rear foot heavy style and was able to move and evade much more easily. Committing to counting on getting your leg cut up is a bit strange to me. It feels very cultural. Like when Brazilians looked down on leg locks.

I use the dutch style as my primary stance. My main sparring partner is a guy whose 6'9 btw. I am 6'0, not short, but short in comparison to him. I also use lots of leg and body kicks, against everyone. I dont use headkicks, though I need to start doing so. Against everyone else though? The other guys, who are NOT 6'9 but are near my own height or very slightly taller(like 1 or 2 inches at most), and many are smaller than me in both height and weight, so I am neither the tallest/biggest guy in there, nor the smallest, by any stretch. Ive been training 2 years and 6 months, jiu jitsu for 1 year 1 month before that with gracie. I always use a tight guard whoever Im fighting though I will use long guard and posting depending on the defensive needs of the situation. I prefer blocking over all other forms of defense due to its reliability and the fact it keeps me in my stance. But I will do other forms of defense if its better for the occasion, using footwork to evade...though I dont use head movement that much except when we are working pure boxing, because I am afraid of eating a knee meant for my body, or a kick(and amplifying its power by slipping INTO it...yeah both those things scare me lol).

Genetics are a bitch. Plus they don't lift that much, it is what it is.

SUM MO' COMMENT ACTION It’s weird some dudes have massive legs just from doing running and conditioning from Muay Thai and others need to do leg days three times a week. Joe Valtelini is a good example.

If you stretch a lot your legs start to look thinner when they are in a relaxed state

@@summocommentaction3273 genetics arent all theyre cracked up to be. i can build muscle easly and look pretty good, but im honestly not that strong, at least with gym weights. Ive got good funtional strength for grappling and striking, but im jealous when i see guys smaller than me squatting 6 plates or more when i cant. Ive got pretty thick, long legs. I think the longer limbs are a detrement when lifting heavy.

I KNOW you have a Much larger channel, But you Should do some videos with Icy Mike over at hard2hurt. I think a couple/few Collaboration videos would make for some really cool Cross-promotion... And most importantly, some Awesome content!! 👍 You produce some Great, high quality, informative stuff, man! Keep it up 👊💥

To clarify dieselnoi was very much a muay khao fighter great knees and he used the long guard not typical muay khao guard so go for what suits you best

Had to smile watching this. Just realised that it's now something like 35 years since I (as a guy with a background in Aikido and Ju-Jitsu) started cross training in Muay Thai. I never did take it to a high level, but I did enough for it to change my outlook.
