I'm more comfortable mixing the two. I've never liked clenched fists when guarding. I have a tendency to tense up. On the flip side, I don't like my ribs being so exposed with a traditional Thai stance. So the end result has my arms having only a slight flare, while my palms are open. Chin is tucked against my collar bone, and my upper body is turned ever so slightly, so as to not present such an accommodating target. Works well for me.

Love it! Hearing you say "you're too tense!" Lol Thinking I like that classic style better so far. Thanks for all your guidance!

In case of elbows it is highly recommended to open the fists again. Don't elbow with tense fists!

Great advices i prefer thai guard bc i just cant get used to a kickboxing guard im tall and i have long arms and i have that problem with shoulders when im at that guard im flexing shoulders too so that sucks 😅

Good video, being both a Martial Arts Master Kickboxer and Bouncer in Holland I must say its 1 of the best videos I've seen. You could of added the actual stance, footwork etc muay thai tend to stand this way to check kicks faster... us the Dutch we rather condition to take them and punch 👊 u instead. Good work.

Does it take a while to learn how to tense the forearms while relaxing the shoulders?
@8TribeMuayThai8
@8TribeMuayThai8 15 дней назад
If you had to choose, focus on relaxing shoulders first, and just not having your forearms too floppy. I don't think it takes long at all if you put attention to it... maybe a week or so of focused effort to get into the habit

Thank you for explaining it, pretty helpful. I'm shorter and stockier so I feel more comfortable with the Dutch guard as I prefer boxing combinations with kicks. Do you think it's easy to mix the Dutch and Thai style, because sometimes I change my guard to Thai when I want to elbow, is that a bad habit? I feel like the Dutch have better boxing and Thais have better kicking. Thanks once again, great channel
@8TribeMuayThai8
@8TribeMuayThai8 Год назад
Oh totally, if you can mix that's even better. I usually teach one guard , then once you master it learn the other, then mix it. That's next level, but should be aimed for, so if you're already doing that, even better!
@zacharyhamley4024
@zacharyhamley4024 Год назад
Yeah that's perfect. Just be careful when you switch guards so your opponent doesn't recognize it and see that "oh you changed your guard I know ..... is coming." Try using the dutch guard and jabbing out and then using the jab as a post with open palm to transition into a more thai stance.

Nice natural presentation. Good advice as well. I do Muay Thai so I naturally prefer the looser guard, but both are equally valid. Good advice on the traps! When I started out I constantly had a pain in my neck from tensing up, until I learned to rest my shoulders / guard on my lats (this'll make sense to a few you)

Great video explaining the differences. It would be helpful to have a camera angle that shows the feet when explaining the stance.

Why do the shoulders have to be loose? Wouldn't it be more protective to have you shoulders high and bury your chin between them?
@8TribeMuayThai8
@8TribeMuayThai8 Год назад
Shoulders loose make your punches faster and snappy. Hiking the traps makes you tense, and tense muscles are slower. Try them both out, really tense and hit a bag. Really loosen shoulders and hit a bag. Exaggerate both to highlight difference. Then see which is best! Also proper guard will protect your chin

How would you block incoming jabs in the thai guard? Im tall and lanky so im comfortable with open palm. Ive seen thai fighters close there forearms together to prevent jabs from penetrating.
@8TribeMuayThai8
@8TribeMuayThai8 Год назад
If you are the taller one, yes you can parry at a distance, it’s easier for you as they have to come in to land it… alternatively you can keep distance and push kick when they come in for a jab. If those don’t work you could try something else. It’s good to eventually learn different moves to defend the same thing, it gives you options like using different words to describe something to a friend.
