My photography trip to Iceland is over and I'm heading home. Here are 3 things I learned.
Check out Ivan and me on Instagram at @IvanThorPhoto and @Brendanvanson
See Gareth ( / tourist2townie ) and Steve ( / backpackerorg ) for more Iceland coverage soon.
Photography online back up: goo.gl/rjLZQ7
It's my last Iceland Vlog as Jeff and I are dropping people off at the airport and ending this photography trip.
The Photography trip to Iceland has been amazing. And, all the participants have been incredible.
I learned a lot on this photo trip, too. Yes, I was the guide and instructor, but I think that no matter your position you should always be seeking to grow and learn. This trip was no different.
The three things I learned in Iceland were:
1) Photographers who want to sell their images can't shoot the same locations everyone else does. If you shoot photography at the iconic places only, it's hard to sell the files as there's so much competition. Find new places to shoot.
2) The big difference between making it as a pro photographer and not is finding the time to shoot. You really need to dive in and commit if you want to be a professional photographer.
3) I've been lucky in so many ways. I've never had broken camera gear. I've never lost files. And, I've been pretty careless. So, I need to get better at protecting my gear.
This is the last Iceland Vlog, and I do head back to England at the end of this episode.
The next photography vlog will be from back here in England. So, I hope you stay tuned to the channel for those episodes.

Iceland is seriously the most epic place on earth. You put it perfectly. There’s never enough time because you keep stopping to photograph everything you see!

Brendan, the sure-thing strategy for back-ups is 1-2-3: 1. Back up frequently to an external HD 2- Back-up from time to time to a HD that is in another physical location (your mom's house, office, what have you); 3- Back-up to a cloud service. I use Backblaze, which charges U$ 5/month per computer (and attached peripherals) data unlimited. I feel safe.

Great stuff in this one. Those beautiful green boots that matched so well with your outfit were the hero of the trip...Seriously though, that was a cool intro you put together, and some great advise.

when you say "dive right in" as a pro, that is a general statement, dive into what, stock photography? You have learned a lot coming up in your profession that a newbie would have no idea where to start. (like me, I have no idea if there is a market and how to reach it, and I have been photographing for 35 years) You said someone wanted to buy your Iceland photo because it is different, who wanted the photo, some of your clients, a stranger on instagram? Imagine someone at their house wanting to work at photography, and they are good at it, the experience is a blank wall, what's the next step. I have though, seen you explain your income octopus, that is a general outline of your employment, but there is a lot more to it than that, an inner knowledge of how and who to sell to that you learned somehow and managed not to starve in the meantime. You're fortunate and talented.

Really loved the Iceland vlogs, I never get tired of seeing footage and images from that magical location, it really is a stunning island! Looking forward to your Cornwall episode, i was there briefly this year while on holiday in Somerset, driving on the A39 from Minehead along the north somerset/devon/cornwall coast is a hair raising experience, my poor little Nissan Micra could barely make it up some of those hilly roads, the inclines are insane!

Thanks for the advice and the journey to Iceland. You are the second video I have watched today talking about following your dream, as a video youtuber or a traveling photographer. And I wish I could be both lol ... But then realized I have a skill that I have already been doing for 50 years that I am passionate about. So I need to put my energy in that skill and on my days off just enjoy learning to take better photos and work on my videos only as a hobby.

Great info and tips! Currently I'm in that inbetween stage. Totally just wish I could quit my job and shoot all the time, but, like you said, I have to commit and it just takes time. Thanks again!

Great video Brendan. I loved the piece of advice about not shooting the 'iconic' locations. I actually think that's good advice for amateurs as well. Shooting the less well known places not only produces some more unique images but also means that you are unlikely to be in a crowd. I do most of my images in and around the area that I live in Spain and I rarely see other photographers. I think being in a place where lots of photographers are trying to get the best shot can really limit your composition choices and, especially if you're just starting out, can be a bit intimidating and lead to rushing the shots to give someone else a chance. Anyway, that's just my view. Keep up the good work

I went to Iceland on a package holiday and though we did not have much time in each place of interest. We did see the northern lights, waterfalls, the capital, whale watching boat tour etc. Yet I still feel I missed a lot of the real iceland. II would love to go back and just take my time travelling around the country. Brendan's vBlogger of Iceland are pretty good at where, and what to see and how to capture the scene !

Three 3 things I learned my @yourtraveladventures tour with you, @photojeffbartlett and @ivanthorphoto : great travel photographers sleep little if at all and subsist on sugar free #redbull; never ever check a bag with important gear and a passport in it; and there is so much to learn about the world through photography no matter what one's age! Four: Icelandic is impossible to learn in 10 days, if ever. Happy travels in Asia.

Brendan, If you are using the standard phone connection cable for the Mavic that is likely to be your problem. I had phone disconnect problems all the time till I ditched the standard cable and used a normal short usb to micro lead plugged into the auxiliary usb port underneath the controller. Make sure you get one with a right hand 90 degree micro usb plug so it doesn't get in the way of your left hand when you hold the controller. Cheers for the excellent content. Barry

Haha, when I'm in The Netherlands I say it the right way. Funny story, until I was about 25 I didn't know how to pronounce my own name. It wasn't until I met some Dutch people travelling that they taught me. haha

instead of saying job or no job. what about saying why not work part time like 16 hrs 2 days a week then take photos the other 5 days. then you have at least some money even if it is very little. or work on having a few months of money in the bank to pay your bills with. it is always taken that if you want to take photos then you want to be a pro at it. may be some people want to not get caught up in the business side of photography, but still enjoy taking pictures with no deadlines

Had the same issues with the Mavic and my Iphone. But as I turned my phone into flight mode (no Wifi, no Bluetooth, ...) since then it works perfectly. You will not have the map because you have no internet connection but I guess this is the problem when the smartphone loose the mobile internet connection the Mavic turns off the screen.
@BrendanvanSon
@BrendanvanSon 6 лет назад
I tried that. Still nothing. However, I updated the firmware after and now it's working fine again.
@Juergen_Weginger

Ok, maybe the last firmware will work. I have not updated the Mavic for a long time because I did not fly much for the last couple of month. Wish you good light in England Regards Jürgen

*4th* thing you learned, captioning is a thing. After you've uploaded to the Tube check to make sure closed captions/subtitles are switched *ON* there's a broad spectrum of your audience that watches via captions, family's asleep, can't find headphones, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and other reasons. This is especially important when the first part or two of a series are already *CC* and the last one in the set isn't whoa dude what'd ya do! -- Cheers from Toronto --
