Its good to TRY to learn the local language, and get to a certain degree of fluency - but most languages are not as easy as German for English natives. (Both are western germanic languages of the Indo-European family) As a native of English, try French or Russian (non-Germanic, but still Indo-European family), or, if you are *really* overconfident: Finnish or Hungarian (Uralic languages) , or some Asian languages - you will realise that only a few people are gifted or dedicated enough to "learn a language" past their teenage years. (I am a native Hungarian with German as second and English as third language)

Honestly as someone from Berlin I get so annoyed with all of the Brits Aussies and Americans living there not making a SINGLE effort to learn German. I can’t speak German going to most of my favorite cafes or stores in Berlin cause they all don’t speak German. That’s kind of crazy in the capital city of my home country. It’s great that Berlin is so international don’t get me wrong. The thing is that there is zero effort, they don’t even say danke or hallo which is the least I would do if I wouldn’t know the language working in a different country. The thing is, it’s only Brits, Americans and aussies who act this entitled expecting everyone to speak their language in a German city. Everyone else from every other country learns and has to learn the language and then they get ridiculed or people are racist against them because they don’t speak good enough German, when they are actually trying( and English is also something they have to learn so speaking English for them is already harder). I hate this white double standard and the entitlement of these English speaking people compared to people from all other countries coming here.

The equivalent in France would be the justificatif de domicile- you need to prove you have a French address to do anything. Usually it's a recent utility bill or tax doc with that address on it. But this also means you can't open a bank account or get hired for a legal job if you're homeless. Definitely a catch-22.

@@suzannethepaut-hasselback7050 But beware, some only accept bills from Orange, the former France Télécom telephone operator; or EDF, for your energy bills; as utility bills. Als Engländer oder Amerikaner oder sonst was, kann man ja mal versuchen mich in einer anderen Sprache als meine anzusprechen. Die einzige Antwort die dann kommt laut" Lern Deutsch.".

I know everyone ridicules the first point but I also understand the foreigners who don't learn it. You don't even get much chances to use your German here except for official reasons. If you really want spent your life somewhere learn the language ofc.
