I have only just had to say goodbye to my beautiful girl after 35 years. Yes. They can be a one person bird. That doesn’t mean that the rest of the family can’t interact with them too. I was not the favourite person 🤣 But I still enjoyed being able to sit and talk to her. Give her veggie treats etc. tell her off when she chewed something she wasn’t supposed to 😅 Would I get another one You bet I will. 😊 Life without a Major Mitchell is not living. Our life at the moment is very empty. I’m looking forward to the next bundle of joy that will come into our lives. And I’ll keep my fingers crossed that I will be the next favoured person 🤣 No matter what. It will be loved 💕💕

Maybe so- but she’s an expensive bird and not easy to find in the US. They also have a reputation for being bad pets, not sure why. Pink and beautiful again these factors makes it so people don’t seek them out much.

So like you, I researched and researched. I found much I’d info to be repetitive or perhaps copied from one source to another. Years of looking into them and having kept other parrots I put the Major Mitchell’s on the back burner, and just hoped I’d come to my own conclusion upon interacting with one. Well I came across one and she was a sweetheart. She ran down to me for scratches off her perch mid preening and I walked away after giving her some head scratches and listening to her cute mumbles. She calmly watched me and then jumped back up on her perch and went back to her business. I waited awhile and went back and she repeated. I had her on my arm and both my kids arms and she was great. Stepping up for all. I can say my macaw took far more work when I met her, and she wasn’t not nearly as sweet to my kids. Like you I heard females are better and getting them started and constant socialization is everything with them, trying to not allow them to really become a one person bird and to piggy back off of you, I heard the chewing and toy situation is definitely the biggest thing with them just chewing on wood 24/7.

Six years ago, I was thinking about acquiring a Major Mitchell, however, they were very pricy (they are even pricier now.), so I decided not to. Two years ago, I started thinking about acquiring one, so I contacted a local breeder but unfortunately, they decided to keep their babies because they only had a few. I continued looking around until last Nov, I found an 18 m/o untamed Major Mitchell online. I had to make an appointment to visit him at a parrot shop because he was not tame. I decided to take a chance to see whether there would be some connection between us. To the owner's surprise, the Major Mitchell seemed to be OK with me, at least without freaking out or running around. He was able to stay on my hand for an extended period of time. However, if he was off me, there was basically no way to get him back because he was so afraid if you approached him. I noticed the "situation" of this parrot shop and how owner's husband "handled" the birds. One week later, I went to visit him again and it took awhile to get him on my finger. He stayed with me for quite a while and I asked him, "do you want to leave? do you want to go home with me?" He seemed to nod. Then, officially, I took him home. For a month and half, I was battling with his panicked behavior. He would freak out and rush out of the cage when I extended my fingers to the door of the cage. He would let me chase him and just would not step up. The condition got worse and worse to the point that I felt regret that I bought him. I felt somewhat desperate, so I searched online to figure out what else I could do to change the situation. I found the following advice: DO NOT CONTINUE THE SAME BEHAVIOR FOR THE BIRD TO ASSOCIATE WITH YOU NEGATIVELY. I decided to stop chasing him, keeping my hand away and anything I could think of that would frighten him but I still wanted to spend time with him. So one day, I pulled a chair and sat against the cage with the door open. He somehow decided to climb down and step on my knee, then he let me pat him. I asked him, "is this what you like?" After that experience, whenever I had time, I would do the same with him. Within one week, it seemed that I gained his trust. He was no longer afraid if I put my hand into the cage for stepping up. I rarely needed to chase him around. He would step up normally. Now he has been with us for 10 months and he very comfortable, easy to handle with a playful, sweet personality. His name is 乖乖。 He is now 28 m/o.

Hi Tom - thank you for sharing your story with me. That is awesome! It's not easy bringing home an untame bird like that. You did what you needed to do, you spent time just being with him and letting him come to you. Wonderful! I am guessing this will be the first year of many more to come. Keep me updated!

@@ParrotBliss Glad that’s your response!! I appreciate that so much. I know I only have little birds currently but I’ve had large parrots in the past as well. They are quite literally children in every way. I’ll be well prepared before I make the commitment! Don’t worry I’m not one of those people going to run out and get a cockatoo (the most challenging bird of all birds) after watching some cute RU-vid videos. Heck no. This will be my partner in crime for life and I’m happy to wait until it’s the right time and right bird! I’ve already waited years and I’m happy to wait more.

Sometimes YT is like the Twilight Zone for me - I swear I responded to you! Anyway, yes, Cockatoos are very challenging pets and have needs that, I feel, are hard for a human to meet. Major Mitchells not as much so, but they too need a lot of companionship. Do you have yours yet?

Thank you for this informative video! I have an eclectus and I am considering getting a baby cockatoo. It seems like cockatoos have such a bad wrap, its nice to hear a different perspective for a change. What do you think about umbrella cockatoos? Would you recommend?

As far as aussie parrots go they seem to be much quieter than others. I see them in the country in Australia and they barely make a sound in comparison to the larrikin Sulphur Crested cockatoos

Interesting, maybe it depends on where in Australia you are. I have a friend who says that when the Cockatoos are around, it is loud.

I have had a major Mitchell for 35 years. Sadly she has just passed away. As with all cockatoos. They have there moments were they like to have a screech. But they mainly do quieter little chips and sounds. They are mainly a one person bird. That doesn’t mean that other people are left out. In that 35 years I have always been that other person 😂 not her favourite. 🤣 But we enjoyed talks together. Giving her veggie treats. And telling her off. 😬 they do love to chew. There is not one day that I have ever regretted having her. Will I get another one. You bet. My life is not the same without one. 😊

They aren’t easy to find. You have to find a breeder or contact a store that will sell and ship. That’s assuming you’re in the US, They’re more common in Australia.

Bird trying to prove she's a bad pet, bites you on the nose. All she's really saying is 'DAD'! They're a beautiful bird, native to Australia but I've only seen one or two in the wild. I've got a galah who can give you a decent bite - name is Chainsaw for the reason you mention - they love to destroy stuff. Great vid.

Yes, she’s totally calling for dad! But, it’s so good for them to be used to more than one person - love that you have Galah, and love the name!
