@borbetomagus

I wish the Slow Mo Guys could film a quarter-dial view of the Spring Drive, if only to clear up how many times the 'Tri-Synchro Regulator' 'intermittently applies a magnetic brake' per second. I recently added an Omega Seamaster 41mm to my collection, but in the next case was the GS line and I was very... tempted. In the end I really had my heart set on a diver so I went with the Omega, but if they'd had that green dial SBGV245 I might have come home with two watches. Until you see a GS close-up you have no idea just how amazing the fit and finish is. It almost doesn't look real. The quartz is simply the best of its kind and the spring drive just glides. World-class.
@CrimFerret
@CrimFerret 5 лет назад
I would absolutely consider it. Aside from the movements being absolutely top notch, the finish on cases and dials equals or exceeds most of the Swiss brands. As for quartz, there's a limited edition green dial GMT that uses a special aniversary version of the 9F movement that's accurate to 5 seconds a year which I'd happily own and wear. GS watches are incredibly underrated and given the level of watch you get, absolute bargains. At some point, more watch collectors are going to realise that. I hope to have a couple of my own before that happens.

Having owned a number of rolex, tudor, JLC, sinn, omega and others, I can confidently say that, for me, the GS is the best of the lot. Best value - for the hand finishing and accuracy you get. Best looking - the 44 GS design is just gorgeous from all angles and makes you think just how lazy some Swiss producers are. How many rolex are cased identically? Best dials - come on, there's nobody like them, just look at he new white birch. If they ever manage to shave a couple of mm from the height and add a micro adjustment to the bracelet, then they really will rule the world. The new high beat and spring drive movements are unbelievable. More accurate than anything else, finished to ALS standards. Just next level stuff. The Japanese are definitely organized and detail oriented much like the Germans, which is why both countries make the best cars and have the best engineering. However, both countries have also invaded other countries and stole so much from them, which is why they were able to advance while the rest of the world was catching up from poverty and civil wars. Japan like the Europeans in general are too conservative, which is why they are not doing very good in next generation technologies like computers and AI. In that regard, the USA and China will dominate the world. I believe South Korea will come in close third even ahead of Japan because South Korea is very competitive and does not regard for the obsolete traditions unlike the Japanese or the Europeans. With everything that’s said, the future of the economy belongs to whoever adapts the fastest. There’s simply no room for traditions anymore. Tesla has already overtaken both the Japanese and the European automobile market. Apple Watch has already sold more than both Japan and Europe. The future is in the binary. No more samurai showdown or Rolex market that exists solely for the appearances sake.

@@pyeclam Thank you for your interest. The short answer to your question would be "Both, and then some." Disclaimer: The cause given to the decline of the British motorcycle industry depends a lot on who you ask, and my opinion is worth no more than the next guy's. It certainly can't be blamed on any one single event, but it is undeniable that the appearance around the beginning of the 1970s of inexpensive Japanese bikes that didn't leak oil, had better electrical systems and brakes, and benefited from advances in engine technology had a lot to do with that decline. (At the time, Triumph's flagship Bonneville was still powered by an engine largely unchanged from the engine Edward Turner developed in the '30s.) Add on Japan's development of mass production techniques, throw in labor problems in the UK manufacturers at the time... You see where this is going. The Japanese basically upped the game and the old guard, which really hadn't made significant improvements in decades, struggled to catch up. Don't get me wrong - I love Brit Bikes from that era and have owned several. Also, Triumph in particular has recovered well under the leadership of John Bloor and currently makes outstanding motorcycles. But for quite a while back then, when I really needed to go a long distance in a hurry I grabbed the keys to the Honda and left the Triumph in the garage.

I have considered it and when I had a choice between a Swiss watch and a Seiko, I ended up with a Seiko. And for the price, dollar for dollar, I ended up with a limited edition piece instead of a basic model swiss. I also believe that my Automatic Seiko movement is (like it was in the past) more if not just as accurate as Swiss movements today. It would be nice to get a nice Swiss watch, but I appreciate the accuracy of my quartz and automatic watch - now to save for a spring movement. Swiss were Chinese of early 20th century. Seiko won virtually any mechanical watch Swiss accuracy trials, they have entered. Came out with first automatic chronograph chronometer ... before Zenith and Heuer-Leonidas etc. When you look inside Grand Seiko and compare it to what's inside Rolex ... you can see completely different set of finishes. Rolex didn't even make their own movements till 2004, Seiko has history of high end workmanship.

@@marcusnz232 - There's no question that, compared to other more conventional, non-quartz regulated automatic/mechanical movements, the Spring Drive seems to have a clear advantage in terms of accuracy. Nevertheless, it is quartz-regulated, so, in terms of accuracy, it is perhaps more apropos to compare with a quartz movement, which is also regulated by a quartz, just with a different drive system. If the Swiss Astronomical Observatory trials were held today, it's doubtful that the Spring Drive would be listed in the same category as that of conventional mechanical movements. Whether it would be included in a separate "hybrid" category or in the quartz category I wouldn't know, but most definitely not with conventional mechanicals.
