The etched “S” under the crown was dropped recently. My submariner which has recently gone to RSC for a replacement crystal due to a heavy scratch didn’t have the S on the new crystal, and I have confirmed with RSC staff about that

At ultrahigh magnification you'll also see that at the tip of each point of the laser etched crown Rolex have etched the word "sucker" on their steel sports range.

The first maker to integrate an almost invisible identifier into their watches was Abraham Louis Breguet. His ‘secret signature’, first used in 1795, was etched into the dial and is almost impossible to see unless you know where to find it.

I think this says more about the RU-vid videos I watch than anything else: I already knew the lugs were different sizes. But no way could I remember the 7 lines of text! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Glad to see the subject of the asymmetrical lugs finally discussed... Also, *most* precious metal ones are symmetric, apart from the Yellow Gold on *bracelet* models (116528 & 116508). PS: The symmetric cased ones have a different end-link design too.

personally, i never minded the asymmetrical lugs on the steel daytona... i just didn't understand the inconsistencies across the daytona line... gold and steel have the asymmetrical lugs, and platinum, WG, and RG were symmetrical, but those were "slightly longer" lug to lugs, so they wore slightly larger... very bizarre...

so Rolex doesn't even make their own hands and Grand Seiko hand finishes and polishes them in-house. Yet another factor (to add to the already many) my grail remains a GS. Thanks Watchfinder!

Honestly, I'm quite disappointed you didn't follow the previous in depth (in focus) reviews with Vacheron Constantin, the one I've been most looking forward to and most logical one considering the so-called "Holy Trinity". Hoopefully some other time then..

I've seen Rolex replicas where the laser etched crystal crown is actually applied better than Rolex (see Jenni Elle's authentic to fake comparison)

the aggressive businessy takeover and M&A history of Rolex is just another thing for me to hate about Rolex. I imagine it like the savvy, smooth-talking salesman (with no other skills) taking advantage of the common folk and craftsmen in their regular jobs making the hands and dials and cases and it puts me off even more.

I have an Omega and Rolex but went to the Seiko store and was thoroughly impressed by Grand Seiko. But they made their watches too big! I have small wrists. You should made another video on Grand Seiko, the Japanese details are mesmerizing.

Another fine video! In addition to not making the hands, my understanding is Rolex also sources mainsprings, they are made by Schwab-Feller AG, movement bearing and cap jewels, watch crystals, and spring-bars. But compared to most watch brands Rolex is quite in-house. In contrast to Tudor, which manufactures zero, zip, nada. Sure, the movements are now made by Kenissi, but I consider them a separate company since they’re jointly owned with Chanel and supply movements to a growing list of watch companies.

An equally good guess for why the Daytona lugs are thicker on the left is because that side usually gets pushed into the polishing wheel more at service time.

Not commenting on their quality but I think Rolex watches are boring. Not completely their fault that we have been oversaturated with their designs but even if I had plenty of money and could afford it, I would never buy a Rolex

The Daytona ceramic black dial is just the holy grail of Rolex watches. Saving for one. Waiting for one at retail is stupid and uncertain. Better go for grey market before the watch hits 6 digits, like the vintages Daytonas (who were a lot easier to get!)

Very informative video on how to identify a real Rolex with the etched hidden crown in the crystal and the left part of each lug being wider. Also Interesting to learn that the hands are not made by Rolex per se. Out of curiosity, does the hands manufacturer only make the hands for Rolex or do they also supply other brands?

I used to own the white gold on oyster flex which has even lugs and I have to be honest, I HATED that little extra millimeter that sticks out from the bottom right side, I actually hated it so much that I sold it and got the stainless steel version instead , funny to say but it feels much more balanced and slick even tho it’s not symmetrical , go figure 🤷🏼‍♂️

You are not correct! Not only steel or bimetal Daytona models have different lugs!!!!! Yellow full gold daytona also!!!

I still wonder why Rolexes which cost in the 10s of thousands of dollars still use $2 watch band pins to keep them secure attached. If the watch band snags on anything with force, there goes your Rolex. Can't Rolex come up with a more secure strategy?

I'm sitting here with a Chinese Daytona on my wrist with a little laser-etched crown at the 6 mark that begs to differ. I do love this channel but the pearl-clutching/virtue-signaling against replicas despite having several videos actually featuring them strikes me as more than a little tone-deaf, especially in light of the fact that 99% of the people watching this channel will NEVER be able to afford most of these pieces. The Daytona is a beautiful watch by any standard, but Rolex has their own heads so far up their own asses that even if I WANTED to pay the $15k or so they're asking for it retail, I couldn't get it for any less than actually double that. Artificial scarcity and generated demand for a product is an asinine way to inflate your product's value. Rolex used to be a brand that was renowned for being a quality product that was expensive but attainable by the working man (a $300 Daytona in the 1960's adjusted for inflation would cost around $3k in today's money). Now it's just a symbol of shocking affluence and excess, and yet Rolex loves to cash in on this by telling everyone that they can only produce so many a year because it's a mark of such meticulous craftsmanship and that's why they're so expensive now. Miss me with that shit. In a world where Chinese manufacturers can reliable reproduce nanotransistors for cheap electronics, a mechanical watch on the order of micrometers is child's play for them. Hell, the Chinese manufacturers even replicated the MOVEMENT component for component. All that's really left is for the Swiss watchmaking industry to play damage control trying to convince their clientele that their product is really worth, and I'm using a calculator here, 10,000% more than the fake, because it was assembled by a man in a fancy building in Switzerland, and the most absurdly hilarious part of all of this is that Rolex thinks a 2mm laser-etched crown is the end-all of authenticity verification. There is no "art" in the Chinese replica, sure. There is no Swiss grandmaster horologist with a white beard holed up in an attic with a loupe assembling the movement over months. It's slapped together out of mass-produced parts, probably largely by a machine, with humans performing the final assemblies. Anyway, why did I buy it? It's still a gorgeous watch for sure. Deep black dial and a timeless design that catches the light in amazing ways. But I paid $300 for it, and it's more than scratched the itch without having to blow an AD to get the chance of getting a call at some point in the next five to ten years, to then have to run red lights getting to the store in the hopes that one of the other five people they called with 30 grand burning a hole in their pockets won't scoop it up first. There is probably some magic in owning the real thing, but pretending like the knowledge to build it is a trade secret locked away by the most wizened gatekeepers of horology is some petty marketing bullshit perpetuated by watchmakers who want their clientele to continue believing it's totally kosher to charge thirty thousand dollars for a fucking watch.
