I’m waiting for all the comments from people are just not happy about your having a radar key, but are also quite happy to park in a disabled parking place (because it’s only for a minute or middle of nowhere) or happy to park on the pavement blocking the pavement for people that are disabled and/or others thus forcing then into the road.

When I go bikepacking I use a normal toilet, I also carry a toilet trowel and my own paper if needed and I also carry a radar key. I have options and a use of disabled toilet in my final option and it will be used respectfully. I also carry a canal key for similar reasons and it allows to use drinking water and it’s used respectfully. I also carry my own water and also a water filter/purifier. It’s about options and safety whilst also being responsible 🙂🙂👍

As an old dude with a dodgy washer I think the Radar Key could be useful. I use the trowel really, as I'm going to be really far away from civilization where I can be. In towns and cities I fit my really ear-splitting alarms 128dbs, so at least I know I've got the pleasure of knowing potential thieves were given pain. If you stick your nose in my tent beware I don't cut it off or any other body parts, all bush crafters carry insanely sharp knives. I got a trailer to add kayaking to my experiences in the great outdoors, and a bit of glamp mode in my old age.

Re: contact item. If you use a Garmin GPS device for navigation you can set up a splash screen with emergency info that gets shown for a configurable amount of time when it boots up. Obviously it needs to be near you after an accident but it's another option.
@Cycling366
@Cycling366 Год назад
Yes that’s true. My only query about that though is unless you’re a cyclist, you’re probably not going to know what the Garmin is or that is even has that feature so you’d probably not turn it on!

I need a radar key. Been meaning to get one for ages. There is nothing wrong with using a disabled toilet, if your caught short …. If the choice is use the toilet…. Or go outside the locked toilet… it’s better to use and ask for forgiveness later. As you say common sense. If there’s anyone queuing don’t join it. Not all people who could use a disabled toilet will be registered disabled. And just because a person is using a disabled toilet with a bike, doesn’t mean they aren’t disabled… not all disabilities are visible.
@Cycling366
@Cycling366 Год назад
Exactly my point really - I don’t only use disabled toilets now. It’s just when the unfortunate scenario presents itself of being locked out of a toilet block on a Sunday evening 😂
@syrus3k

Yeah sort of.. I think you're better off finding somewhere else to take a dump personally. Having the key will make you lazy

So I am disabled and I would never consider carrying a radar key even though I’ve been offered one and I won’t use a disabled toilet as I can manage in a normal one. On the other hand my other half is in a wheelchair and had great difficulty getting into toilets being an amputee with bone degeneration and due to other things if he needs the toilet needs to get in immediately as do many disabled folk who due to their conditions just can’t hang on so for me it’s a no no I would hate to have someone mess themselves because of me stopping their access to a disabled toilet. I don’t carry a card but all my details including emergency contact are on my OneLife wristband. I wear it 24/7. Dry bags I have always carried spares handy to stick stuff in and attach to bike etc and keep clean and dry. Finally what happened to the follow up e-bike film, weren’t you going to bikepack on it?
@Cycling366
@Cycling366 11 месяцев назад
Absolutely see where you’re coming from. I only use it when it’s a very early morning or late at night in a sleepy village as otherwise I’d just use a typical toilet when they’re open! Good idea re the wristband! Yes I have postponed the e-bike trip for a bit. It’s still on my radar! Won’t be long till I do it though :)

@@Cycling366 I’ll be interested to see how you go with that and the differences you encounter. I use both analogue and e-bikes.

Yes I’m curious to see how it differs. I love using the e-bike for nipping to town etc but over longer rides I’m yet to give it a go. I will definitely do it once the weather improves 😂

Could there be legal implications in not be registered as disabled and using a disabled facility?

I checked this with a solicitor I know beforehand, it’s not illegal to use a disabled toilet if you’re not disabled, however, as I mentioned, it’s about using your common sense and being respectful! All the best

I use disabled toilets all the time (don't use the key though), they are great for changing clothes in due to the extra space. It's definitely not illegal to use them.

Sorry Tom the owning of a Radar key isn't right. Now you have said where you get them from people are all going to get them and just use them when and wherever they want.
@Cycling366
@Cycling366 Год назад
I respect your opinion. I agree that using a radar key irresponsibly is wrong - I don’t however agree that all my viewers are going to go and buy them and use them irresponsibly. Like I said in the video, they’re there in an emergency to open locked toilet blocks if you’re desperate. This certainly should be seen as the norm! All the best.

Yeah I agree with Christopher.. you shouldn't really be telling people about this as most people are lazy and ignorant.

LAZY and irresponsible on your part to occupy a handicapped toilet when you are perfectly capable of digging a hole. The time of day should not matter, nor should the fact that the toilet is unoccupied. The quote, “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should,” comes to mind. I can appreciate your honesty and transparency in sharing your habits, but you have to remember you are representing bike adventurers and what you do reflects on our community (both in this video and in person). I only know you through your videos, is this how you want others to view you?
@Cycling366
@Cycling366 11 месяцев назад
I’m sorry but that’s a load of rubbish. I quite clearly said I rarely do it - only in an emergency (and it isn’t an offence to use a disabled toilet anyway (not a ‘handicapped’ toilet as that’s a derogatory term!) - it’s about using your common sense… And quite frankly, crapping into a dug out hole in a small Scottish village green on a Sunday morning is more irresponsible than using the toilet!
@garymitchell5899

There isn't a 'touring community' and what other people do doesn't reflect on me, or vice versa.
@funkdrummer
@funkdrummer 11 месяцев назад
@@Cycling366 agree to disagree. Rarely using, or using in an emergency, a facility that is not meant for you is morally wrong in my book. You do what you want. There must be a reason a disabled bathroom has key access, or it would just be open to freely use. I really do enjoy your videos. They are inspiring and beautiful. As an American, I see people infringing on others rights all over the place and it is extremely bothersome. It seemed odd to me that you would make a video tip suggesting that others buy the key. Lastly, if you don't feel right crapping into a dug hole anywhere, then maybe you should reconsider bike adventuring in that location.
@garymitchell5899
@garymitchell5899 11 месяцев назад
@@funkdrummer If he leaves it as he found it there's no issue at all. The key is only to prevent people trashing the disabled toilet because obvs that one is more important than the others.
