The only way to have light in our watercolor painting is to paint darks. Contrast is the crucial ingredient to create light. This week I talk about the importance of painting strong darks.
I give three tips on exactly how to do this in a clean, bold way.
I also show you some of combinations to create strong washes.
I have a complete guide to all my supplies. Check it out here: www.learntopaintwatercolor.co...

What I learned also real early is to keep that first wash very weak to allow the paper to 'shine' back through preserving the light, as well as leaving some whites and contrasting this against darks.

Hi Matt. Once again , thank you for your tips, as they are always helpful. I struggle with perspective and scale. A video of how to approach those would be extremely welcome..

Thanks. I like your teaching style. It’s very helpful to see your demo of mixing colors and using more or less water to get the desired results. I like how you explain and show the process and results.

Hi Matt - Thank you! I always appreciate that you present each concept in such a simple, focused way. One subject I am always curious about is how to select the paints to keep on your palette. For example, in this video you have 20 (and did I spot only two greens?). Thank you!

Choosing your palette is a personal thing. Every artist will be different. I noticed that many choose the same basic colours such as cobalt blue, cerulean, burnt umber and sienna, raw umber and sienna, and cadmium lemon yellow. From there it varies. The style of painting can influence the palette.

Trying to start again after some years of not being able to, your videos are so clear, fresh and at the same time me relaxing, so thank you! Just one reflexion... in my experience mixing warm and cool colours together inevitably creates duller (muddier) shades. I remember mixing warm darks and cool darks was a good, useful thing and for that you need to mix warm colours or dool colours, nut not both in the same mix. The dynamic between warm and cool darks in a painting can add a lot of interest. I would love to see a video on your take on warm and cool colours!

Thanks Matthew. Helpful video. I don’t get dark darks when I mix. I’m trying to not use blacks. Have you done any videos on loosening up? I see detail and struggle to paint in a way that’s suggestive and loose. Thanks again👩🏻‍🎨🙂

This was great! I think another thing to note is that not all colors were created equal. Some are naturally darker than others, and some are impossible to make as dark as you'd like

Hi Matt, There is one thing that I am really curious about and that is watching how much water you use to keep the paint flowing. I'm self taught and so have watched many videos including stretching the paper before you begin. I saw that almost in every case it was recommended that you leave the paper overnight to dry flat, then when you begin your painting told that where some errors in getting the results you are looking for occur is because too much water has removed the sizing and then causes problems! So with such conflicting information out there, is saturation of your paper for wet into wet really the way to go? Thank you so much by the way for all your free tutorials and tips, that's so generous of you and very much appreciated.

I always thought ultramarine blue was a WARM color. I guess if you use more of Payne's Gray it will cancel out the warmth from the blue?

Hi Matt.... yesterday I tried sticking watercolour paper with matte medium onto a balsawood panel...and dried it ..it didn't buckle at all despite doing wet on wet technique mostly. Is this ok?

Hi ...I unsubscribe... subscribe... frequently watercolour channels on RU-vid...because I get frustrated with watercolour and then get attracted by it...so I have continuous love- hate relationship with watercolour...maybe others also identify with this feeling....but it never happens this yo yo with oils and Gouache. Please comment... anyone

I’ve never tried other mediums but understand your frustration. It’s not easy.
