Teach techniques, not products... Videos like this make me doubt how useful other courses can be. I'm a hobby photographer hoping to learn, but all I learned here is how you become a better(?) photographer by buying expensive stuff.

SLR Lounge | Photography Tutorials I spoke my mind without filter. Even though I stand by the meaning of what I said, it came out wrong. It came out frustrated and I should not have. I get what you're saying, and the techniques can be used with other equipment. I've enjoyed (and learned from) your other videos and this really felt like you were 'selling out' which frustrated me.

When did making a living become "selling out"? We make the majority of our income shooting, not by creating education. In my mind, selling out is taking a paycheck to do something you don't believe.

dude... are you pissed that "the video is misleading"?? or that Pye is more successful than you and you cant afford all this gear? Introspect. What is your problem if he endorses profoto. You can do the same thing with Broncolor. Karl Taylor would teach with Broncolor. Then you would go on his video and say "ohhh you sold out to Broncolor"... You use either.. Pye doesn't care... Fuck profoto then. You buy broncolor. Can you afford that... No right? so your problem is that. Not about Pye endorsing Profoto. Its free education.. freakin learn from it.. create your brand and make the money to buy the expensive gear instead of bitching and moaning "photographers teach tutorials with expensive gear... i can't afford it" Its your problem if you can't afford it! When he teaches and we don't pay... SOMEONE has to! profoto pays! don't want sponsored lessons.. Pay! and join a workshop and then you complain if products are pushed.

Great video - I learned something, thank you. I am kinda puzzled tho. The way I see it, beauty dish is at first aimed at the model's face and torso but later (when he flexes muscles with his hands behind) his shoulder and upper arm are completely black which means the beauty dish was moved..? Is it because you aimed the beauty dish only at his face, not his chest anymore? The same thing with a big guy doing dumbbell curls in your linked article. We can see both stripboxes doing their job and outlining the model perfectly but his right tricep is black which means the beauty dish is definitely not coming from the camera angle. What am I missing?

No disrespect, Pye, I know you're good at explaining the light in general, but this video realy comes down to highlighting the product's features which are somewhat divided into 3 little parts, each having a simple title you can kinda call a "tip". I'm positive people wouldn't mind you calling the video "Why we use Profoto for Dramatic Fitness and Athletic Portraiture" and describing how and why this particular set from the sponsor is perfect for the task. Nobody hates Profoto, but you don't have to mislead viewers just because you have it :)

The video isn't why we use Profoto, it's a how-to video on the lighting techniques for fitness. Yet, you want it to be named "Why we use Profoto?" This would make sense if you couldn't substitute any other light while using the same techniques. But, you can. This is a video on techniques, not why you must use a particular brand. Yes, we are sponsored by Profoto, and yet I don't see how this is misleading viewers. -- Pye

I have a question. Why to use this powerful light kit in a completely dark studio? I suppose you are using, at most, 1/64 of their power... This is a real doubt I have, cause I have speedlights, and the only scenario I think I would need a profoto, for example, is overpowering the sun, or some outdoor work in a sunny day. There is some other benefit? maybe the colors are best? Thanks

Is because he turned on the modeling light to see where the OCF will fall eliminating the guessing game. It is very useful when you shoot in studio

You can rent them nowadays and you can also limit yourself with only two or three (makes you more creative!). Those who want find the way and those who don’t find excuses.

You can do the same with four 99$ Yougnuo speedlights and hand made modifiers. Replace that 4th flash by a 30$ V-flat.

Great video. I unfortunately do not have a beauty dish and have a fitness shoot coming up. I have barndoors and umbrellas, thoughts? I really like the harsh light effect, but I want to maintain that dimension and depth to muscle.
