Your Tool tutorials really got me introduced to drop tunings. I appreciate your videos so much man. I play in drop A# now for my own stuff, but I've been recently been back to drop D with Fear Inoculum dropping. Keep up the great work!

If you realy want girls throwing themselves at your feet.....get yourself a cheap loud (100w) amp,a cheap guitar (no trem) ,a tuner app,a spare empty wharehouse with electric, and thrash some drop D over and over till your fingers hurt... If you've got something to say....do it with volume (Overkill by Motorhead is a good start) no fancy chords but full on "New Metal"....over to you Matt.

Another tip for beginners. When you tune to drop D, tune the lowest string just slightly flat. That will compensate for the difference in tension and keep you in tune a bit better

Thanks for that tip. when I play in standard tuning, I tune the d string slightly sharp and the g string ever so slightly flat. It makes the open chords shapes for D and A Major sound in tune with a little practice.

I hope I won't sound to be exaggerating, but the bonus tip is pretty much the most "wow" tip for beginners I've ever heard on YT in many years. Many people who pick up the guitar learn to only tune with a tuner, but the oscillation of the two notes is something simple yet so fundamental to understand how sounds work. Big props!

A great tutorial for beginners, extending on how to drop tune, would be how to correctly set the intonation for the dropped string since most guitars will come set up for standard. Will help a lot of people stay in tune across the fretboard while they explore drop d!

@JackieBGoode
@JackieBGoode 4 года назад
Gabe K when you lower it to D, the string becomes more loose. It makes it so that it will move up and down more when it vibrates, making it more likely to hit the fretboard. If it’s an electric however, your amp probably won’t pick this up.

Does it mean with drop D tuning it’s better to stay with the key of D because of the open D string?? And if I want to use a different key should I tune it down to another drop tuning like drop B for example if I want the key of B ??
@axeofcreation
@axeofcreation 3 года назад
Not necessarily but think of how many Metal songs (Metallica) are centered around Em. That's because the focus or general style of that music in based off the low string. Drop D just makes exploring and creating an D centered harmonic backdrop easier.

Greg, i have a stupid theory question. You are turning single notes within a scale into power chords. But, ive seen where each note in a specific scale is assigned a specific Roman Numeral. And those Roman Numerals dictate whether that chord is a minor or major chord. But, you are playing all power chords. Am I overthinking this???
@Levy3o8
@Levy3o8 3 года назад
When you see the roman numerals, that's a reference to that note's position in the scale, and the upper/lower case of the numeral indicates major or minor chord structure. C major (CDEFGAB) for example, a C chord (aka the I chord) would be CEG chord. Some chords in major keys may sound minor, while some minor key chords will sound major, it's based on how far the notes are from each other that make up the chord (visualize a keyboard). For example, that CEG chord is major because it has 3 notes (C#, D and D#) unused between the first notes, and 2 unused notes (F and F#) between the last 2 notes. Minor chords are opposite (2 unused notes of the keyboard between the first and second notes, and 3 unused between the second and third notes of the chord). Power chords are made up of the root, a 5th, and an octave. A C power chord for example is CGC. It's been years since AP music theory, so I may not be using proper terminology, and anyone please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my understanding.

John Flemming Or, hear me out. Tune to the open D string.
@collinmackin5911
@collinmackin5911 4 года назад
Lee McDonald The point of being able to tune to drop D by ear is you can train your ear. You don’t want to make it easy for your ears, you want to get them used to detecting small changes in notes so you can adjust by ear. Tuning like this makes ear training a lot less impactful. Don’t tune like this.
