If the kite starts falling backwards in a lull, grab both center lines and pull hard. This will reorient its leading edge back into the wind and help it fly back up...

I would add practice reverse launching the kite if you drop it in light winds. I fly a 11m Contra single for light wind foiling and reverse launching is the only way to re-launch it below 10-11kts.

Good point, just discovered that for myself yesterday. 10m reach, measured wind speed at 8knots when I got off the water. Crashed kite a couple of times, couldn't relaunch in the usual manner but reverse launch saved me a long swim!

yes the reverse launch is a must to learn. its worth a bit of your time to practice in shalow water with just your kite to figure out how to get the kite back into the air. I have an airush light wind kite that can do normal relaunch most of the times.. but my bandit 10 i have to depower all the way and reverse launch it or it wont go up.

When getting in and out of the water, keep the kite moving as you said but also keep it close to 12. On it's side it will have far less lift to stay in the air. And stay close to shore of course, unless you like a marathon swim 🙂

I woud include one more tip: use longer lines. 3-4m line extensions can make a big difference in squeezing 1-2knots more ;)

Great tips! I would add a couple of things that help me in light wind: 1) while flying the kite I keep tension in my center lines by pushing forward against the bar (not necessarily by sheeting it in, you still want to keep the bar in the sweet spot...) this keeps it from stalling out in lulls. From the video, it looks like you do this as well. 2) when relaunching, I pull the trim strap in all the way, that helps the kite stand taller and catch more wind while it's on the water regardless of which light-wind relaunch method you use (...though it won't help if you happened to have dropped the kite in the water on it's back).

Cool video Jake, nice to see you sharing your lightwind knowledge 👊🏽👊🏽

Cool video! Another key factor is kite size: there is no benefit in taking a 12m or 14m. You're much better off with an 8 or 10m which is lighter and turns faster.
@BeanyBamBoozal
@BeanyBamBoozal 2 года назад
Agreed, was out on my 10m reach yesterday in 8knots, had a couple of difficult relaunches, doubt I would have been able to relaunch my 12m. The lightness of the smaller kite compensates for the lack of surface area.

Depends how light and inconsistent the wind is and rider size. I foil on a 12 boxer one strut a lot where I am as some days it's so light an 8 or 10 won't even launch. Relaunch is a pain but possible. I am also heavy at 250lbs so a 8 or 10 won't pick me up to get on plane too.

I'm heading to Antigua in the next couple weeks. I'm bringing my 18m Flysurfer so should be good for some light winds. :) ne tip I have for light winds is line tension. Always keep some tension in your lines. If you let your lines go slack, it's a lot harder to recover in light winds than in stronger winds. Especially on foil kites.

Hey Jake, what kinda foil do you recommend for a beginner foiler? I already wingfoiled, but i want to buy a foil for light wind days. My kites are core nexus 8 & 11m, so i guess those are already ok for foiling. ^^ 🤙

Hello Jake cool tips.. what kind of watch do you have 😁

Nice tips, I would also add learn to loop the kite if the wind gets really light. Looping the kite generates a ton of power and line tension. Not necessary for general riding just when it gets really light or if you are coming back to beach and it's dying.
@vincentaa7825
@vincentaa7825 4 месяца назад
Yup this is a good one. If the kite starts falling out of the sky to one side, dont pull the opposite bar side, pull hard on the side the kite is falling to put it into a loop. You are using the falling weight of the kite to gain kite speed which = power to get it back up to 12.
@khoa7269
@khoa7269 Год назад
If the kite loses slack and starts to go into a flip over position (front stall), because you crashed for example, then pull hard any backline to force the kite to turn and crash on the front tube instead of having a flipped kite or worse a inside out kite.

If it's suspect conditions always have someone that can retrieve you. Or be upwind of your launch position. Never foil in light conditions by yourself.

Suck a good tip dude! Light wind is sketchy always have a back up plan on making it home 👊🏻

1: Know how far you can swim and take into account currents! 2: don’t forget the oldskool relaunch, pull through opposite front line. (I think you have that tip in another video?) 3: if you are strapless, sit on the foil (I can’t do this one yet) to create the resistance while you relaunch.

Final tip. Practise self rescue if its been a while since you did it 😅 so you know how to get back to the beach if you cant relaunch and never go out in a light offshore wind alone!

Hi Jake, does the foil board matter for light wind ? Or just the foil setup ?
@JakeKelsick
@JakeKelsick 2 года назад
A bigger board can help but doesn’t make a ton of difference it’s really about the wing in the water. Once you can get moving the bigger that wing is, is the quicker it will get you on foil. You eyeing up a setup or what!? 🙌🏻
@russkielol

1 tip- get a flysurfer hybrid kite! you will go pretty much as long as wind blows over 8mph

Foil kites are epic in light wind for sure but I think they also up the sketch factor of things to go wrong in light breeze, especially on long missions. Do you rip on a foil kite!?
