General advice for anyone trying to start their pets on whole prey - I started feeding whole prey to my two cats recently, only within the last few weeks. One is a year and a half the other is 9 months. Both were extremely confused at first, they threw it in the air, played with it, both didn't recognise whole prey as food. But now they love it and know what to do with it. I started with cutting the whole prey into tiny bits and removing fur/feathers. Then I started leaving a little more and a little more fur/feathers. Once they were comfortable with that I started making the chunks bigger. Everyday slowly increasing until it was basically the entire whole prey. Once they were ready for the whole prey I gave it to them gutted at first and now it's just the whole prey not gutted at all. Every step of the way I placed lickable treats on the whole prey bits until they understood that it was food. Be patient if your pets aren't used to whole prey, it's a whole different type of food and can be very confusing at first, especially the fur and feathers. But have hope! Make the transition slow and fun for them, don't rush it or be pushy about it, or else your pet will just associate whole prey with stress and anxiety.

Yes, cutting whole prey up and removing some of the fur and feathers is what helped them get used to it later on. It can work wonders

I made a cheat sheet for my dog and cat a year ago, it's in a page protector hanging on my fridge next to my prep area. It has saved me so much time and worry, thank you for making one for everyone to reference!

I'm so glad I found this video. My now 9 month old puppy has just gone through food rejection around 6 and a half months for about 2 months, eating half meals. He's come back with a bigger appetite than before. Is this behaviour a raw fed only thing? As my friends dog(kibble fed) never had this food rejection moment or other people that I've spoken to with, kibble fed dogs. It's why I'm glad I found this video as now I don't feel like it was my fault my dog wasn't eating its just a natural thing, like I knew they grew slower as a natural/raw fed dog as they grow more naturally so thank you for this. Helps out a bunch 🐕👍💯

I know the percentages by weight that are in your cheat sheet but should I reduce the amount of food after I get my kitten spayed? Because from what I've read is that cats can gain weight after getting spayed and we should reduce the amount of food

Paws of prey this is a unrelated question is can my cat eat sliced turkey? My dad buys turkey from Costco and slices it so it’s not premade my cat Pepper adores turkey but I want to make sure it’s okay for her

Hello!!! Thanks to your educational content, I have been inspired to start my foster cats on a raw diet!!! However, I live in India, as such we have basically 0 info on raw feeding around here, even in the city, however I've been doing my best to track down good suppliers of meat for my cats, I'm still in the research phase however. When I start my cats on raw meaty bones I'd like to start off with quail before moving onto other, larger cuts such as chicken wings and necks. As such I must ask, is there any website that dictates the various bone percentages of quail??? All I know is that quail is about 10% bone, but I don't know if it's whole quail with feathers and all, or cut quail(no feathers, head, or feet, akin to Thanksgiving Turkey per say). And if so, is there any website that has the percentages of bone in quail cuts like wings or legs??? Or is that available on your paid platform for raw food calculations??? Thank you in advance!!!

@PawsofPrey Год назад
Aw that's great! I'm happy I was able to inspire you. Take you time to research, there's a lot to learn, but you can definitely do it! Unfortunately I have not found any detailed bone percentage on each part of a quail, just a whole dressed (no head, feet, or feathers) quail. You can try to create your own average with the information we have on other birds, but of course it will not be perfect. I would also assume that smaller bones like quail bones are less dense in calcium as opposed to chicken, duck, and turkey bones, so you will need to keep that in mind too, especially for kittens.

@@PawsofPrey @Paws of Prey Thank you for your support!!! One of my cats, the mother, used to eat chicken feet all the time before I took her in, so I'm sure she'll remember what to do though it's been so long, I'm really looking to get that tartar off to prevent a costly dental scaling. As for her son, he's 8 months or so now, and he's mouthing a lot!!! So I'm definitely interested in starting raw meaty bones soon, and thank you for informing that it is dressed quail!!! That sets off some of my worries. I have plenty of calcium supplements from a while ago so I'm sure they'll come in handy. It's harder to find safer cuts of meat in India as our regularly system isn't as strict as the US, but one can only do their best!!!

Where do you find your whole prey? And what whole prey animals do you recommend for a puppy? I'm picking up a 10 week old mini schnauzer puppy in early January (the breeder feeds raw, so pup will already be used to raw food), and I'm trying to get as much as I can prepped in advance--but whole prey is something I'm having trouble sourcing.

Hi. I know it's a bit off topic but I don't seem to find the right information on how much green tripe to feed my 6 month old Goldador puppy. Anyone have any suggestions or know where I can find the info? Thanks so much. I'm actually quite overwhelmed with it all.

how sad is it that feeding whole prey is the easy feeding method for the owner's part and it's literally their natural diet but we as consumers have been brainwashed to feed cats & dogs kibble instead

The only thing that applies to raw feeding when they're young is whole prey. The rest apply to starting raw at any age.
