Being a professional studio musicianmy suggestion is that you learn all of these tips that she's teaching you but you will find that the most important tip that you need to learn is when not to use this stuff. many times I've gone into the studio and have an idea about what I wanted to play and then had the producer want me to play something that was so simplistic that it was almost impossible to make it groove. if you can make 'simple' groove you have a better chance of becoming an actual working musician than if you have the greatest chops in the world but don't know how to apply them correctly or keep it simple.
@stanhathcoat920
@stanhathcoat920 3 года назад
Very well said! Her points are good, but many great songs need simplicity in the groove from the rhythm section. I grew up on 50s, 60s, 70s RnB & rock as a bassist, before the bass became a "lead instrument". Many unbelievably good players with monster chops today, but, if they are truly great they play inside the groove, not so much around it.
@TerryNails
@TerryNails 3 года назад
@@stanhathcoat920 perfect example of one of the most simplistic baselines ever is Lonnie Turner's playing on Eddie money's baby hold on To me. The other thing which is a huge part of becoming a professional working musician playing bass is that you need to find your own voice. You need to be able to express who You are through your playing while adding to the song itself without getting in the way and stepping all over everything which seems to be what happens most of the time nowadays. We have reached a point with many young musicians where the bass player simply competes with the lead guitar player which basically is a no-win situation for the song itself.

So I recently picked up the bass after playing guitar for 25 years, and found myself naturally adding ghost notes when I was playing and wondered if I was starting a bad habit. Good to know I wasn't, haha. Thanks for the great lesson.

Yonit, thank you!!! I started watching your tutorials before I even bought a bass, and felt so ahead of the curve when I finally got one off Craigslist. I don't feel like I struggled much as a beginner because I could hear your advice in my head, so I already knew solutions to problems. So I guess you can say you inspired me to be a bassist! It's also inspiring to learn from other female musicians. I'm four months in now and keep learning so much from your vids. Keep it up! Cheers from SC.

Solid advice. I'd like to add tip 0. Practice everyday. I played at least four hours per day for the five years. And if you have to force yourself to practice or it seems like a hassle to do so, you may not really have what it takes--the love of playing the bass. :)
@RockerProf
@RockerProf 6 месяцев назад
Anybody who considers practicing their instrument torture, or practicing their instrument painful work, or has to force themselves to do it, does not have what it takes to be a musician of that instrument. It's kind of like being married to the right person versus the wrong person. It's hard work, but if it's the right person, you don't mind doing the hard work. Because you love what you're doing.

Good tips if you want to go from a beginner to an intermediate or advanced player. But the fact is if you play for nothing you're amateur. If you play for money you're a professional. Many amateurs are brilliant. Many professionals are terrible. But these are still great tips!

That, my friend, is a good video to bring the little things to your attention. When i was a beginner, i "tricked" a lot of people into thinking i was better than I actually was just by using ghost notes. I didn't realize it was a thing actually.
@BelmonteSummone
@BelmonteSummone 4 года назад
Depending on the song and band, DO NOT ALWAYS PLAY GHOST NOTES. They are amazing and work in a lot of situations, but in a lot of blues and punk bands, they want straight notes or in the case of blues, they might want the upright sound which is a mellow, simple sound. Yes, it will sound cooler, sometimes it is necessary, but don't go trying to play Columbia era Miles Davis with all of that fancy stuff.

For years I thought my large hands were an advantage but seeing all these female bassists on RU-vid made me realize how my fretting lacked fluidity. I practiced with a hair bungee wrapped round my fingers (in a figure of eight to keep it in place) to force me to loosen-up my grip and to move my hand instead of stretching.
@aaronstjames235

@@oldunclemick Same w-the large hands after all these years of playing I find there is not much I cant play if I want to invest time and effort into it and when I dont play at least an hour a day my fingers begin to slow down massively so i think im going to take up playing the wash tub Lol

I noticed that most Bass Players are fast and smooth when their picking and my right hand seems to be a bit out of control and sloppy. I getting better and better bit worried I'll get bad habits that may be hard to break. So my question is. Do you have a Video I can watch that will give me the proper way to Pick the Strings ???? Okay, so I just figured something out....triads work well for ska and punk type stuff more major scale type songs. Pentatonic bass fils work better for minor key songs, sadder stuff such as funk, blues and new wave/post punk/shoe gaze type stuff.

@fortj3

@Vincent James I recently bought an Ibanez miKro bass because some songs are a lot easier for me to play on it than on my LB70. My hands are XL width with M finger length (insofar as glove sizes go), so 1st to 4th and 3rd to 5th fret stretches on some songs are difficult with a 34" scale bass. My pinkie just doesn't have the strength to do those stretches without buzzing on the 5th fret, and I cant reach 1-3 and 3-5 with index and ring fingers. I'm sure working on finger strength will help, but it was also a good excuse to buy another bass.
@andrewadams5271

I use that method but it’s not for everyone. The great Victor Wooten almost always positions his hand to cover only three frets and no one’s outplaying him.

I like ghost notes, but sometimes I think they derive from the poor technique of some amateurs or from the praiseworthy attempt of some professionals to make up for the shortcomings of the guitarist's drummer :-) Seriously, I think that the ghost notes with the bass should be used sparingly, unless you play alone (which is more appropriate for the guitar).
