Free tip: Tune your guitar every time you play it!
1. Clean Sound
Make sure you mute your strings properly with the thumb and perhaps with other fingers
2. Control the length of your notes
Long notes, short notes, staccato, muted notes - it’s all in the fingers, be creative and change a bass-line just by using different lengths!
3. Change your strings
Don’t play on rusty strings! Change your strings every 6 months in average if you gig regularly. Don’t change your strings a day before the gig, try to aim for a week before.
4. Play (super, super super) in time
Don’t underestimate any groove, even the simplest. You think 4/4 is too easy for you? You got it wrong! It’s never too easy. Turn all you attention to where the beat is and to be as accurate as possible. That could make the simplest bass lines shine through.
5. Learn different techniques, and use them sparsely (or when required). This includes muting, playing with a pick, Slapping, tapping, hammering on, pulls offs etc. It adds some spice to you playing, but be careful and don’t over use it when inappropriate!
0:00 Introduction
0:08 Work on a clean sound

Thanks again for a great lesson. The thumb on the pickup is something that I have been doing for over 20 years and for most of that time I knew it caused problems muting the E String (4-string bass) which I partially compensated for by muting it with my left thumb when possible. I felt it would be a disaster to try to break the habit since my playing would fall all over the place; muting the E-string when I want to play it, plucking the wrong string because my hand is not in its usual position, etc. Also it seems a lot of energy essentially moving the entire right-hand up and down every time you want to use the E-string seems a lot of work and tiring. However after seeing this lesson, I decided to try to break this habit before I die. Actually it is not as hard as I thought. A half-hour of playing basic lines plus moderate-tempo songs I know well and it started coming together. The tone is significantly more focused on the non-E strings. Just wanted to mention the thumb-on-pickup habit is not as hard to break as it seems. The real test will be the show I am doing tomorrow but it looks positive. Thanks again for the great lesson.
@havable
@havable Год назад
I feel kinda lucky because my thumb was already naturally resting on the E string. I anchor my pinky on the other side of the pickup sometimes. But I also have an unconventional style. I use my thumb on the E string, probably a habit carried over from playing guitar. Sometimes I use a forefinger but the thumb is my go-to. That's probably why it rests there naturally. If your experiment doesn't work out, try using your thumb to strike the E.

On my P bass I have a set of Labella Flats that are ~13 years old, just keep them clean. Rounds go on my J style bass and those get changed pretty much as often as you suggest. If you can afford it try to have two basses. If you only have one bass set it up with whatever sound that can land you the gig. I’ve been considering a PJ bass with rounds and a “series/parallel” switch. That blended tone has really been growing on me. No matter how long I’ve been playing I always look for something basic I might have missed. There was no RU-vid when I started so it was picking up as I went along. Thank you for these vids!

I have two J's (my first one just stopped working the night before a gig so I bought a new one aiming for close to the same model). I'm interested in a P, tho. What I'd really like is a collection with different gauge strings and a variety of flats and rounds. But yeah, dream on right?

Good luck being a sadowsky bass artist!! That's a Good gig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Job, great advice. Perhaps mention STAND UP when you play bass in a band. (you sit in your bass videos like your watching a movie?) I Force myself to practice with strap and standing. You owe it to your audience to stand while performing and your body will keep time for the rest of the band. My drummer on stage can only see my back however he can predict many of my note changes by watching my "Bass Dance" the way my body naturally moves while playing. If you still find yourself playing bass in your 90's then sit down...

So so simple, with two tones!!!!! ("and then I do some fills in between!") Ha, I know what you mean, but it are the fills that make this Basslines sounds fantastic, but then you need more notes then just the two!!!!!

Thank you for this excellent tutorial! If you’re playing on the D string, you would mute the G string with the left index finger while muting the E and A strings with the thumb, right? Thanks again for all you do.
@kevinmichael9482
@kevinmichael9482 3 года назад
Sounds right! when descending, I was taught to mute higher strings with my fret-hand index finger. When playing the G-string, I place my thumb on the A-string whilst gently-leaning against the E-string--after years of experimenting, I've found this a relatively efficient muting strategy.
@bsul03420
@bsul03420 4 года назад
I'm an old fashioned type of guy and I prefer the muted sound that one gets with a double bass, so I generally play with a foam pad under the strings. The foam I use is not particularly dense and the pad is only about a half-inch square throughout its length which I butt up up close against the bridge. However, I'm sure I can hear the string going sharp as the note fades away. I don't think I'm imagining this, so is it something you have experienced using a foam mute?

The first time I changed bass strings I immediately regretted it. I don't really like that metally sound. It isn't the "boominess" of older strings I like, its the smoothness. I have one song where I like new strings, so I have another bass that I only use for that song. Those strings will last a long time b/c its just that one song. What bums me is that I'll eventually have to change the strings and they'll sound too bright for a while.

How to properly mute the strings if I play a 5-string bass, esp when I pluck the G string?
@bustabass9025
@bustabass9025 5 лет назад
I play five and six string basses almost exclusively now. I use the "floating thumb" right hand technique for string muting. That is, instead of anchoring on a pick-up or the adjacent string as I travel up and down the strings, the thumb travels with the fingers and rests against the B E and A strings. When playing the high C on my six string I will rest the thumb on the D string, and carefully rest the thumb against the B E and A strings. This, in my opinion is a very effective way to to keep unwanted noise out of your grooves. 👑🎸🎵
