3 Tips to Ensure LadyBugs Stay in Your Garden after Release 

I released some ladybugs in my garden, today. I hope they appreciate what I did for them.

Also John, if you release the ladybugs at the base of the plant, they, quite instinctively, will climb up the plant, devouring pests along the way. The place I get mine keeps a few bags out ready to use. In my ladybug release video, I show how they have these little internal "gyroscopes" that make them want to climb (when out of their dormant state).

While I did remove some of the aphids on the flowering tops, Im SURE im missed some. Unless I took an emense amount of time, It would be nearly impossible to get all the aphids. They also hide under leaves, up stalks, etc. So rest assured, the ladybugs have more food for them. In addition, Aphids reproduce and there are "always more" coming. I would prefer to spend time doing something elese than getting all the aphids. So I release the ladybugs as they are free labor.

There are less aphids in winter when it is too cold. That being said, I usually wash them off (kitchen sprayer, each leaf) and/or brush them off on my shirt. I may end up eating a few of them, unintentionally. Good for more protein and some say even b12. I would rather eat aphids than some toxic sprays. Please do not let it deter you from eatting your fresh greens. I will make an episode soon about another device I use to remove aphids from the leaves before consuming them.

The container full of ladybugs shown in this video cost me 5 dollars. Here in my area, OSH stores sell ladybugs. Check local nurseries and/or hardware stores with nurseries (forget the big box stores- they dont generally sell bugs). Otherwise, you can order them online.

Great Video, I use Ladybugs also,The reason they don't last in your home refrigerator more than a couple days is most likely your fridge is frost free meaning it pulls the moisture from the air inside and after a couple days they become dehydrated and die. I also toss a kid sized box of raisins 20 or so out so they have an initial food source prior to mating.

Yes, I do grow some root vegetable, such as carrots, radishes, beets, turips. That being said, I focus on growing greens and things I prefer to eat over root crops.

Ladybugs are naturally attracted to the Ladybug stress pheromone. If your neighbor has more aphids than you, they will leave. Green Lacewings are the better choice.

Spray the lady bugs with sugar water before releasing them. The sugar water will dry and prevent them from opening their wings and flying away from your garden. The next time it rains, the dried sugar holding their wings will melt in the rain and they can then fly away. I kept the 1,500 I released in my garden for a week before they started flying off to kill the bad bugs in the whole neighborhood.

I realize this came out in 2011 and it's 7 years later now. However, I have read that importing ladybugs from outside sources can bring in diseases and parasites to native ladybugs in your area. Any thoughts on it? Also, what source would you recommend getting ladybugs from? Online or do you use local sources? Oh... and what time of year would you recommend releasing them in the garden? I live on the Texas gulf coast; mild winters and brutal hot humid summers.

Thanks for the video John. I have a very small indoor garden under grow lights. The aphids have already destroyed most of my Basil and other herbs and they are all over my Chard and spinach. I am going to order a small amount of ladybugs and was wondering if the ladybug nectar would help.Also am wondering about a ladybug house.

You did the video about Las Vegas and pine nuts! We tried one year and they said every other year. Believe it or not, we found one pine nut and split it, so delicious! The rest of the stony pines were all dried up!

I have spidermites infestation on my indoor plants and a lot died already, and looks like they are spreading onto more plants. I'm planning on buying some ladybugs but some know how much as I do have a plant outdoor with the gray bugs just like yours....so I want to have enough ladybugs to eat the bad bugs in all my plants....how many do you recommend per plant? How long did you leave the lady bugs in the frig? Would a cooler work as well with small bag of ice to sedate them till released? I'm thinking it's not a harsh environment as a refrigerator.

Assuming the aphids are on your brassicas most of the season (they grey ones are on mine pretty much all the time, regardless of how often I blast them with water or spray with Dr. Bronners), how do you clean them all off before eating your greens? Do you soak, or spray with the kitchen sink nozzle, or...? I usually end up eating far less of my crop because I never feel as though I've gotten all the bugs off, and I'm just not that into getting my protein in that manner, lol.

I live in michigan, i have a frog terrarium that has aphids attacking the plants for the 2nd time (i guess these are the eggs from the ones i previously killed) Where can I buy a small amount of Lady Bugs or find em cheap enough to let the rest go into the wild if i have extra?

I worked at an airport that had a crop dusting operation and the place was covered in ladybugs. They actually spray them with crop dusters. How you can spray live insects and have them survive, I have no idea. I'd like to know though, so if you know, please say.

I have to wonder why you removed the lady bugs food source before releasing them. Since lady bugs are carnivorous, they need the aphids in order to stay in the garden and become established. Personally, I would have removed the aphids a day or two later. Just my 2 cents. However, I love your videos and your commitment to growing your own organic veggies and self-sufficiency. Spraying the lady bugs lightly before releasing with a mix of soda and water and let them dry, the wings will kinda glue shut and keep them from flying away and not harm the lady bugs

I got my ladybugs today and instructions said to leave them in the fridge until I'm ready to release them. Question is, do I need to take them out of the fridge and let them warm up BEFORE taking them outside for a while or do I just take them from the fridge directly to the garden?

LOL - Last year I tried to grow squash and zuchinni, and I thought the ladybugs were destroying the leaves, so I was constantly removing them. It just shows how dumb I am at gardening. I did everything you recommended, releasing a brand new batch in the evening, wetting down ivy, etc and this morning there is nary a lady bug in the area. Are they hard to see? Or ya think they took off??

I ended up making a small arts and crafts house out of hotglue, popsicle sticks, and tape to keep them in! It seems to be working for now as im providing water and honey for them. I hope they stay, does anyone have any guesses for how long theyll stay??
