Something I saw this year was that my Shasta daisies appeared to be a ladybug dating site! I saw dozens of ladybugs on the plants in May and many of them were mating. The Shastas have grown to be a bit too big for their locations but I will always keep some in the garden to promote more ladybugs. Also, please show a shot of the larval stage of good bugs! I have seen people killing them off because they look so different from the adults.

I'm growing shastas from seed for the first time. I heard they're cold hardy and deer resistant, but I didn't know they were good for ladybugs. I'll have to put them next to my brassicas and roses.

last year my old peach tree got absolutely infested by aphids after throwing out early growth following warm spells in late winter. By may the tree was covered in ladybugs, parasitic wasps, and soilder beetles all having a field day on the aphid population and by july the tree was pest free! This year there has been absolutely zero aphid presence on my peaches and the tree is loaded with fruit! Ladybugs really do put in the work.

Lady bugs lay their eggs where there will be food for their larvae. I once bought a plum tree (end of year sale). Went to plant and found it totally root bound.. Managed to keep it alive over winter. New leaves came and tree was covered with aphids. It was a stressed tree. I do not treat with regular or organic pesticide. A few weeks and I saw eggs, then larvae, etc. That tree became a massive lady bug nursery. The tree survived, and has thrived for five years with beautiful leaves and no aphids. If there is food, they will find you!. 🙂

Wonderful Luke, thank you so, so much for this. On social media I am constantly battling against those people that use grey water full of toxins on aphids and on plants generally, and those that use dish soap on aphids and other things. It is extremely toxic and full of nasty chemicals, unless it is something like castile. If they need removing all it needs is a hose squirt. I also get the answer 'well, it's only on the flowers'! Um, well, yeah! They can't seem to get it that it is not only taking a vital food, but it is killing good bugs, and it is a shocking toxic mix to go into the soil, whether it is around flowers or vegetables! Of course, I don't have to tell you this, but please can you press the point that dish soap is just the wrong substance. Sometimes I really fight a loosing battle, when publications like garden news in an article-bubble said use diluted dish-soap! Without explaining what they mean. Thank you so much, this video means a lot. I can't wait to see the rest.
@ExplodingPsyche
@ExplodingPsyche Год назад
I've seen so many RU-vid gardeners do videos saying to mix dish soap with things like neem oil. So called "dish soap" is not soap, it's detergent. Detergents contain surfactants which are designed to dissolve oil on your dishes, etc, and so they strip the protective layer of oil off the leaves of your plants. Perhaps in a small quantity it's not so bad, but overall it's better to use castile, which is an actual soap.
