3 Train Meet at 70MPH - BNSF & UP 

I wish I had one then. We picked up a Mavic Air to take on our train adventures...maybe we'll get back here sometime. -Cam

maybe it would be fun for the first few times...but imagine doing it day after day, year after year...the same route...never having a schedule...hard work...24/7 etc etc...

I prefer the Dash 9's to GEVO's because it's a more visceral experience. Louder inside the cab with a deep sense of that V16 humming and chugging along. And the exhaust note is angry and raw sounding. Dash 9's are the muscle cars of today's railroad.

Oh yeah! Daggett is always a great show, and I've only been twice. It's only a few minutes east of Barstow (huge yard), and if you continue east on Route 66, it pretty much parallels all the way to Needles. That's pretty cool that you've been to those places. A Transcon bucket list would be awesome to check off. -Cam

There have actually been people who have been it because on one side of the tracks the train is ending and they don't know that another one is coming in the opposite direction. They absolutely need to honk the horn.

I would assume so. It looks like it funnels back to 2 mainlines about 2 miles west (left) of this spot. So the coal train wouldn't have a green signal yet. Good question. I hadn't thought about that yet. -Cam

​@@melperry3576 I don't mean to be annoying, but if you pull out a stopwatch, which granted isn't the most reliable or replicable method on RU-vid, and time out 1 second on the first intermodal, about a locomotive and a half pass within that timespan. 70mph is 102' per second, and each of those locomotives is 73' and a few inches long. That math has just about 100' (+/- a couple of feet) of train passing within a second, which is right around 70mph. So I promise I'm not trying to be misleading or disingenuous with the title. I know it looks like click-bait, but even if it were 55-60mph, it would still be a cool video, right? -Cam

Two train meets happen quite frequently on the transcon.

It's a few miles east of Barstow.

That depends on how the train is made up. Lower priority “drag” freights like the coal train here usually have much less horsepower per ton than the real hotshot intermodal trains, which means they are spending most of their time in notch 8 (full power) at slow to medium speed with any variations determined by the terrain. The hotshots usually have a high enough horsepower per ton ratio to be able to maintain full “track speed” up and down hills. Once distributed power (additional locomotives at the middle or rear of a train) things get a little more complicated as the engineer needs to really feel the seat and keep the coupler slack forces in check as the train ascends and descends multiple gradients at once.

You're right, it definitely wasn't. I don't mean to be misleading with the title, but I hope the description clarifies which trains were the fast ones. I just didn't want to say, "Two trains meet around 70MPH while another passes slower than that...". I had to think of a title that wasn't too disingenuous but one that also didn't take away from the coolness. -Cam
