Is it normal for a baby to start crawling at 3 and a half months old? Our baby girl just started crawling yesterday doing the commando crawl after learning to roll from her back to stomach a week earlier. Today she’s moving forward about 2 feet in 5 minutes. It seems this earlier to begin crawling but this is our first baby and we’re not sure what the averages are for baby development other than what we read from Google. Thanks

Our baby started belly/commando crawling at 5 months. He has just turned 6 months and still does the belly crawling. How can I help him use his hands and knees, as when I position him correctly he holds the position for a few seconds and then drops back onto his tummy for the belly crawling. Emma, you should write a book!!! I would buy!! I know encyclopedias are outdated, but they are also timeless! My hope is that every parent educates themselves on the options they have in rearing their children, and do their part to reduce their own misunderstandings of behavior.
I had been doing all these things and by 10 months my daughter still wasn't crawling so on that day, I decided to pull out pieces of cheese and put them on the floor to give her extra motivation...well, lo and behold, she didn't start crawling but instead pulled herself up into a standing position from the ground up by herself without leaning on anything 😳 She learned to crawl just as she learned to walk by 10 and a half months!
My boy is about to be 10 months and no crawling only face planting , rolling around and pivoting! Hopeful one day he wakes up and BOOM 💥 starts to crawl
Hi Emma, my baby has started army crawl and she is about to 11 months by few days. I will try these Exercises so that she starts classical crawl. She can lift herself when I do that but comes to tummy position as she moves forward or try to and cry. Please help me especially the case when they know army crawl and know they can grab things how to motivate such a baby??
I've been doing every activity I find by oc therapists on RU-vid with my son and even put him in outfits that his knees and feet are not covered and he was still having difficulty staying in crawling position. I realized at the end of this video that his padded carpet was too slick and I moved the carpet and put him on the hardwood floor. Now he can hold the position on his own without support! I knew it had to be something I was doing wrong because he rocks and bounces in crawling position already and I've felt like he was on the verge of crawling for a while now. Thank you for that last bit at the end! I've heard that before but it clicked when you said the baby would push themselves backward, which is what my son has been doing. So, thank you!
As a Mum of an 8 month old I can completely confirm that our little one seems to have blossomed since she started crawling. She's so cheeky, so happy and seems to be learning new things everyday!

For some reason my grand daughter doesn't want to crawl, or when she tries going forward reaching for something she land on her stomach and stay there. I tried holding her under her stomach on all four and even trying the towel method. Every time I do these things, she starts to cry and turn her body around. I'm not sure what to do next..
My 9 month old can army crawl but she gets fussy when I try to put her on her hands and knees. She kickes out back on her belly. She can rock when I get her on her hands and knees but i feel like she just hates it. Any tips??
Sounds like she needs a bit more time to build up the strength required to stay in the crawling position. I would just wait and with time she will get there
My 9 month old seems to refuse to crawl. She finally started rolling around 7 months but she’s so stubborn. I moved all her toys to the edge of her playmat so she just lays there staring at me. When I try to get her to practice crawling or even putting weight on her arms she just wants to roll out of it. I’ll keep trying with these tips.

He has started to show signs for wanting to crawl at 5 months, but had no hands support yet and just did tons of "swimming" on his belly, but right at 6 months he has learned to flip to his back by himself and right away has learned by himself full straight arm support, lifting his chest from the floor and saw also that he moved his one or another leg under him or even very rarely stood for 1 second on all of his 4 but fell right away on his belly. And still does that "swimming". Today he's 7 months old, I see that he wants to crawl but just moves backwards all the time on his hands. I want to teach him how to crawl right and I really hope that your lessons will really help us to crawl and stop with his moving backwards on his hands and belly + "swimming"...
My 7 months is the same, loves swimming and wants to move forward but instead goes backwards when he’s fully stretched supporting his chest. I will remove the playing mat since it seems slippery and try it on carpet. Any tips on your son’s success?
Great question! Fortunately wooden floors do not hurt their knees because a baby’s patella is initially made from cartilage, which is softer than bone. Eventually the cartilage will turn into bone but not until your little one is a toddler or a bit older.

Your videos are amazing and a lifeline to us. My son has Down's Syndrome and we have no Physio support for him at present. I have been studying these videos to help him. He is 14 months and very comfortable on his tummy, propped up with his arms outstretched. He can roll every which way very easily. And he kind of drags himself across the floor slowly to get around (army crawl). But when I try and put him in a crawling position, like shown in the video in exercise 1, he really struggles. I tuck his knees underneath him as shown but he really wants to push his legs out to the side and can't manage to stay with them tucked underneath him. Even if I use the rolled up towel technique, or over my leg. Any tips to strengthen him so he can hold that crawling position even just for a few seconds and not have his legs go out to the side? My 6mo has started to crawl like a worm. He gets up on all fours, pushes weight forward onto both hands and extends both his legs at the same time to move forward, then lifts his butt up first to get onto all fours, etc. How can I help him discover how to alternate his arms and legs?
My baby is in his 9th month. He is going on all fours, rocking back and forth, then tries to crawl, brings one foot front then he goes down and comes forward. He repeats this to move instead of crawling normally. Goes on all fours and pushes his body to the front and falls on his tummy. Is this normal. But he is standing by holding my hands. Hello, my 8 month old baby can do the 4 point position and rock a little, but any time she wants to reach forward, she slides forward out of that to reach (so pushing on her feet doesn't help), then wants to roll over (whether she gets the toy or not). If I try to flip her legs under her body, she pushes back. Is there a way to combat this?

My nephew seems to be held a lot and I believe he is getting used to that so when you put him down he is uncomfortable and starts to cry. Unless we are sitting on the ground playing with him he will be happy and he will roll around but hasn't gotten into that crawling position. He is 10 months.. If I am doing tummy time with him and using your tips and he starts crying, do I let him cry?
I can hardly wait my baby daughter to wake up so that we may try these tips. I was making that small mistake of trying to get her to crawl with pants and socks on. This revelation about traction is going to make a big difference. Thanks for your great videos.
My daughter was walking at 9 half months old she’s 6 now. My other daughter is 7 half months and won’t crawl, I know children are different but it’s starting to stress me out that she isn’t, I know I shouldn’t compare but I can’t help it I feel like I’m letting her down .

my 7 months old doesn't show any sign of crawling, he hates tummy time and he rolls from tummy to back one side only. And when he is on tummy side he don't know how to push up his arms. I am a bit concerned.

My almost 9 m/o daughter is an army crawling pro for almost 2 months and can crawl regularly as well, but after a few "steps" she always goes back to army crawling when she wants to be somewhere else very quickly. How could I persuade her to keep crawling on her 4s?
Hi! As you have noticed when little ones want to get to a location ASAP they will revert back to the quickest way which might mean switching to army crawling. As your little one gets stronger and more confident crawling, it will be more efficient for her to crawl and she will stop army crawling. It is just giving her more time to develop.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! 8 months is the early stage of when bubs start crawling. So your little one still has plenty of time to learn this skill. If you do the activities mentioned in this video and continue to give them lots of tummy time and floor time their muscles will get stronger as will their coordination and they will eventually start crawling.

Hi Kayla, it sounds like your little one just needs some more time to get stronger in the 4 point position. When your little one is in this position just place toys slightly out of reach and eventually when she is stronger in this position she will start to lift a hand and reach out to grab the toy. Also continue giving your little one time lying on her tummy as this will also help to strengthen her arm and back muscles.
My 7 month old has been army crawling since he was 5 months. He is so fast and gets around so well, I'm a little concerned that he will rely on that instead of transitioning to hands and knees crawling. If I put him in the 4 point position, he falls out immediately as he lunges forward. He'll even crawl over my leg and keep army crawling onward, I just can't keep him still in the 4 point position for long. I'd love more advice on this transition in particular. Thanks!
@@petal8829 my daughter army crawled from 5 months by 7 months started pulling herself up on furniture to stand up and walked by 9 months. She never really crawled. Every child is different.
My baby gets to elbows and knees and tries to crawl but won't straighten his arms and often ends up face planting. He's 6 months old and does so much floor/tummy time. How do I make him push with straight arms?
It sounds like he might need a little more time building up his arm strength so that he can hold his body up when he is on his hands and knees. Continuing to do tummy time and placing the toys on a box or lounge cushion will encourage him to push up with his arms straight to see the toys. With time he will continue to get stronger and be able to get into the crawling position.
Omg thank you for this. My baby is still not crawling at 9 months. She can get into her position but then can’t move forward and falls down. Definitely trying to take her pants off so she can have some grip!!
My 11 month old army crawls with one foot only an is skipping crawling. An she may also be developing foot drop she drags her foot a bit. She can pull herself up on things an uses her sit in walker just fine pushes her self everywhere in it. I'm worried she can have foot drop tho. Will crawling help her cure it
Hi! if you’re worried your little one has foot drop and you have noticed that she is only using one leg then it might be a good idea to check in with her doctor to see if there is a reason and what you can do to help.
I don’t agree with tucking the legs under, we did it a few times and our baby didn’t like it at all and actually started crying on one occasion. I feel like some of this is forcing the baby when they’re not ready.
Thanks for sharing! I tried tucking my daughter’s legs under a week ago and she did not like it either. This just told me she isn’t yet strong enough to hold this position and needs more time playing on her tummy and pivoting to build up the strength. Always do what feels best for your little one and you.
Hi Emma, my baby is 10 months old and still isn't crawling. She rolls instead and when I try to help her stay in the crawling position she puts her head straight back down and refuses it. Should I be worried?

Imagine asking someone on the internet how long untill your baby can crawl. These small motherfuckers can take up to a year before they start crawling. Aint no one gonna know how long untill your baby hits a certain milestone. It is impossible to predict 🤣
It sounds like it might be a bit too early for your little one to get into the crawling position. She sounds like she needs a bit more time to build up her strength. She still had lots of time to master crawling. It is a skill bubs learn anywhere from 8-13 months.
I'm having a problem with my 9 month old son, when he gets in a crawling position he slides on his tummy and then throws a tantrum because he can't move forward. He also seems more interested in walking instead, as he can pull himself up into standing position and insists on attempting to walk. I will be trying some of these techniques to try get him to crawl, because I can see he gets frustrated that he cannot move about to where he wants by himself. Thank you for this video

my baby is 6 mo and likes to go superman form (legs straight and arms straight out) and i try to show her to put her knees and arms under her.. she’s great at rolling but any tips ?
It sounds like your little one is doing the Landau Reflex when she is in tummy time. This is great, as it helps to strengthen her extensor muscles. With time this reflex will dampen. In the mean time just give her opportunity to push up with her arms (elbow extended) by doing tummy time over the bottom of your leg. As she gets stronger in her arms and whole body she will be strong enough to hold the 4 point position. I hope that helps!
It's great that your little one is army crawling. Hopefully the physical therapy can start soon. While waiting for physical therapy if your little one isn't yet able to move into and out of sitting I would try and encourage him to do that. Also continuing to provide him with lots of floor time play lying on his tummy will help to strengthen his arms so that when he is ready, he can maintain the crawling position. My baby girl is 7.5 months old..she only pivots on her belly and has beed doing it since last 1.5 months but is not progressing further.. whenever I try to get her into 4 point position she starts crying and get onto her belly she neither try to get into 4 point position nor she try to move forward even on her tummy and just pivots on her tummy...I'm worried..please help me...
Try not to stress. It just sounds like your little one needs more time to build up the strength needed to get into the crawling position. She will get there with time!
Do you have any advice to encourage a baby to use her arms more? She's seven months old, has a very strong back and neck and does plenty of tummy time. But as soon as she gets on her knees she rolls to either side instead of using her arms to lift her body up. Thank you very much!

Hi! It is really common for bubs to initially push themselves backwards when crawling. And if they are crawling while wearing long pants on a slippery surface, crawling backwards is a given. Placing your hands on the soles of your little one’s feet to give them something to push off should help them learn to crawl in a forward direction. Also make sure their legs are exposed so they can get traction.
I see all these babies just going with the flow with their moms and I’m Ughhhh my daughter can not sit still nor listen lol if I try doing any of these things 😂 it’d be world Boxing Day with her lol she’d be all over just wearing me out until I can no longer catch my breath and I’m ok mama I can’t keep up with you lol she’s just way too active to even get her dressed wears me out 😂😂😂
