I fully agree with the others here, I've been looking through multiple reviews and all of them quickly glossed over the details so I had to glean as much information as possible. Thanks to you I don't need to hop between so many videos to reach a verdict. You have saved me hours of research, truly an in depth review.

This is actually the only real video review of the SE846 on RU-vid in the 2+ years it's been released. Was debating on getting the 846 since the new colors were introduced and these videos made me finally check it off the wishlist.

TheGamingAudiophile have you heard about the Beyerdynammic T8iE mark ii ? If you have how they sound compare with the ie800 and the se 846 ? Since that earphone is also the flagship model of the company . I heard people always compare the T8iE mark ii with these two .

Damn, that review got me going! Im about to go out and drop 3K lol! Well, I am interested in IE800 earbuds. I know exactly what you are talking about with Sennheiser products. The HD800 are nice, I have the same issue with the vocals having a sibilance when listening to music. Although albums are mastered with different techniques regardless, there is a consistency with the vocal observation particularly. The sound staging is airy and spacial which is a positive aspect; however, the vocals struggle to prevail through inherit recorded distortion and master process of the album. I know if I get the IE800, I may run into them having a lack of bass compared to Shure SE 846. I am a sucker for the spacial 3D sound-stage Sennheiser has to offer. The review was very helpful as opposed to the other reviews which don't get into sound detail. Not for nothing, I have agreed with your observations on headphones thus far, which makes it easy to alleviate the mystery of purchasing costly audio devices.

Damn! you said everything that I didnt want to hear about KSE1500. I wish you would have said that "the KSE1500 made listening more fun compared to SE846" . I have been using SE846 as a daily driver for 5 YEARS and I love them for the same reasons as you do. I really thought that the KSE1500 would be my upgrade path but, nope... awesome review!

Great review :) I have the SE846 and I can’t really express my self how much I’m loving them more than everything else I’ve tried from over ears and IEMs. I tried it over several years switching the filters and concluded the white was the most comfortable best sounding to me also. I modded the filter a little bit. Inside the filters there are small foam pieces divided in to or three and after some tips I took one of the foam pieces from the blue filter since I got extra set filters and put it in the white filter, that when the magic happened to my ears. Of course this can be different experience for different individuals, but for me at least this is what I landed on. The only thing I can say as a recommendation to all who buy the SE846 is don’t buy the silver oxidative cables, they get green very quickly and it looks really nasty. The other thing is, get a short hi quality mmcx adapter/converter before start using them because after switching between cables and BT devices they have a weakness so they get loose in the connection and start losing contact if switching to often. But kudos to Shure, they’ve replaced mine three times, but after the third time they told me that’s the last time they will replace and send me new monitors. Even though in the package it was, BT2, cables with microphones for calls plus’s to silver cables, one short and one long. I supposedly thought they were meant for being able to switch between.

It's hart to choose a product like the KSE1500 when at that price range you have Stax? Beautiful review ! thx :-D
@evshrug
@evshrug 6 лет назад
Stax are electrostatic, the KSE1500 is also electrostatic, the SE846 uses balanced armatures, and the IE 800 has an extra wide band dynamic driver. Electrostats definitely have their own way of reproducing sound, extremely transparent and effortless. I haven’t heard the KSE1500 myself, but I very much respect what an electrostat can do.

What music sources do you use listening to the SE846? When i try them using Tidal on Hi-Fi tracks i always feel like the bass is missing (using Fiio M11 DAP). When I use PowerAmp and crack up the bass to ~20-30% its soooo much better, but unfortunately my flac collection is non existing and mp3's don't make justice for the SE846's.

whats stopping u from using an equalizer app on your phone for the kse1500s? for eg, v4a and dolby atmos (which is what i use)
@evshrug
@evshrug 6 лет назад
What is v4a? I’m always looking for cool music apps, does this one just have an 8 or 10 band EQ, or does it have custom profiles that change the whole character of a headphone? I also didn’t know that Dolby made an Atmos app for smartphones that could be used with music. One of the coolest music experiences of my life was going to CanJam NYC, and listening to Stax least expensive boxy earspeakers/headphones, but filtered through the Smyth Realizer A16. The Smyth had recorded what a Dolby Atmos array of some nice speakers sounded like by the time the sound reached my ear canals, and used that info to completely transform the Stax to sound exactly like the speakers, position and all! Now, I love positional audio, and Smyth has a reputation for the best of the best headphone surround, but what stole my attention was how the wetness and decay of the speakers were reproduced identically in the Stax. I actually had to “cheat” their test to hear the transition between music being played through the Stax and switched to the speakers; if I took the headphones off normally, or put them back on, it sounded as if I was hearing the speakers continuously the whole time.

@samuelwhite7212
@samuelwhite7212 5 лет назад
Hey, I used the IE80's every day for about a year and then I decided to upgrade to the SE846. Frankly, they're better across the board. The SE846 sound like a much better and more refined version of the IE80's. The SE846 has great subbass rumble, phenomenal midbass punch, and midrange/vocals to die for. The only real complaint I have with them is the 8k treble roll off. This is fixed with the white filters and CM800 tips from Spinfit. Overall, the SE846 are fantastic and I can't recommend them enough as an upgrade from the IE80.

@duncanmcinnes5819
@duncanmcinnes5819 3 года назад
I have had the shure se 535 and tried the SE846, but the bass was too heavy and the actual buds were larger and uncomfortable for long term use. I had all the Westone 4, Pro 50 and Ws 80s and loved them all. The ws80 once burnt in was so much better than the Shure. The Pro 50s had a slightly heavier bass but my problem was that both the pro 50s and ws80s split. I now have UE18 pro custom iEMs and have recently asked for the ES80s from Westone as I now love custom headphones which are effortless to use. I have the KSE1200 and live them. They are the DAP system instead of DAC on KSE1500. The sounds is so good but again the actual bud is slightly larger than some others.

@TheGamingAudiophile
@TheGamingAudiophile 8 лет назад
+M3a9m The SE846 is basically the SE535 with a seductive bass response that is accentuated in the subbass region and a more present treble that increases the perception of clarity and detail. Midrange intelligibility is also improved. All in all, the SE846 is a welcome step up, but the SE535 is still no slouch and wonderful performer in the $500 region.

my SE846 set up- Left ear warm nozzle, right ear neutral nozzle, music player I use is the FIIO x7 with Poweramp, the module I use with the x7 is the AM3 which has a 2.5 balanced input socket so I use the ultra thin balanced Westone cable, eartips used are the Westone truefit foam, trust me people, using this set up really ups the already phenomenal sound of the SE846 and the balanced cable also makes the treble shine more so than said in the review, Poweramp blows away the opposition in the saturated music player apps, for my ears this is easily the best way to fulfill the potential of the SE846.

I like my SE 535s, coming from SE530s, they have that sound in a lighter form factor and detachable cables using mmcx , yeah I can get better sound out of my tin hifi p1s if I use an amp but for if I don't want to have to a bulky setup and I just want to take my dac on the go I love them for just the form factor and how they really do provide a rich sound whatever you plug into, the 846 honestly probably sounds amazing but the fiddling with the filters to tweak sound probably would drive me a bit crazy XD.

How would you compare the bass and sound quality overall in IE800 to that of the v-moda zn??
@TheGamingAudiophile
@TheGamingAudiophile 8 лет назад
+Dave Vil The Zn is pretty damn good, but compared to the IE800 it loses out in the overall sense of refinement. Soundstage isn't as well proportioned and expansive, vocals aren't as intelligible, clean or natural. Bass is more bloated and not as effortless. It's not a major difference between the two, but it's enough to appreciate the IE800 that much more.

Man. Hands down, the most comprehensive review of audio gear I’ve ever heard. Thank you. That in mind, your thoughts on the most musical mobile over the ear headphones? I ask cos’ for EDC I have Shure 535’s, over the ear Sennheiser Momentum 2’s, an AudioQuest Dragonfly Cobalt Amp-DAC & an iPhone 8Plus. I’m thinking to upgrade my 535’s to 846’s, but don’t see or know of anything more compelling than my M2’s. Wired the M2’s sing! Wireless, they’re super convenient & James Bond, but not as loud or as rich as when wired. So,let me know what you know, if anything (better), regarding OTE, musical, mobile cans. Thanks again.

@falcodarkzz 3 года назад
Blairtronica Hey matey, I’ve been using the Momentum’s for a few years and even the Momentum 3s. I’ve tried tons of cans as an upgrade, MW65, B&W PX, anyway I did find one that is miiiiles better than the M3 (and older momentums, as the M3 > M2). Bowers and Wilkins P9. Really, really good, with a decent DAC they sing, only headphone that’s made me drop my momentums finally, and easily. Thought I’d let you know as a fellow momentum guy

Zeb Thanks. I bought some 846’s (bronze) last Xmas Amazon ran a significant holiday discount on them, so jumped on them. Love them. Just need to have molds made for them for a custom fit. Far as OTE goes, I have two sets of M2’s. One grey. One ivory. Oh, also upgraded my phone to an iPhone MaxPro. Returned the Cobalt. Bought a MojoPoly instead. Nonetheless, will check out the P9’s as soon as I can. Thanks again.

@TheGamingAudiophile

+cys243ssc The Shure's do block out about that much noise with the foam tips if you get them inserted right. The QC25 takes away about 26-28db of noise and the Shure's block out even more noise so I wouldn't doubt that 34-37db claim too much. Maybe about 30-32db seems about right.

No, I did not, I know they are the new senstation is audiophile country, but the price in Germany is more than 100 Dollar more expensive as in the US. The iSine 20, cost here 781 Dollar, so I pass for them.I stick to both my IE80/800 for a long time to come. They are suits my music ( progressive rock) the best. For hme use I have the HD650, same story here, perfect for my music. Exept for the Naim label, I don' t know any audiophile progressive / fusion recordings, in the end the source is the most important because your gear is not doing other than reproduce the sound of the source, if a bad one, let us say older Seventies recordings, even the very best and expensive ear/ headphones wil change this

I recently purchased the Shure SE846 and am thrilled with them. The sound quality rivals my much higher priced over-the-ear headphones. As you said, the bass extension is phenomenal. I prefer the warm filter, but get plenty of treble. I think the airiness of the treble depends partly on the player or amp that is driving them, perhaps due to the very low impedance of the 846. If you didn't get good treble extension with the neutral filter, try a better amp.

I have both MDR-EX1000 and IE800. To be honest, they don't form a comparison at all. The definition(or resolution) of IE800 is at a completely different level. I think SE846 should also have very high definition.

Can you give me a comparison between KSE1500 and HD800 in terms of clarity, bass, sound quality, soundstage and imaging and overall sound
@TheGamingAudiophile
@TheGamingAudiophile 8 лет назад
+Sadek Khalifa The KSE1500 sounds a little more detailed and clear partly due to the increased noise isolation of the sealed design. Bass is tighter on the KSE1500 by a hair, but the HD800 is still quite exquisite in this region. Soundstage is definitely significantly wider and taller on the HD800, but the imaging is comparable between the two.

Sadek Khalifa The clarity of the KSE1500 can easily reach headphones and it does so while also surpassing about 99% of headphones in existence.

Say if I wanna make the investment and I’m prone to be terrible at keeping earphones ( 8 months with a razer adaro is the best I was able to pull off ) would you recommend the se846 in terms of durability that is
@TheGamingAudiophile
@TheGamingAudiophile 6 лет назад
It's pretty durable, but not going to withstand serious wear and tear. If you damage the cables mostly, then you should be fine since the SE846 has removable cables.
@samankowsar422
@samankowsar422 6 лет назад
TheGamingAudiophile and what of the drivers casing I mean the razer I talked about I don’t think the cables stretched but after 8 months or so the sound was like as if they’d recorded the whole thing in toilet it was very dimmed the instruments sounded better but the vocals were so dimmed I couldn’t hear them
@evshrug
@evshrug 6 лет назад
Well, did you ever figure out what went wrong on the Razer? Did it get earwax inside, or did your amplifier create so much distortion or clipping that you blew out the drivers on your Adaro? Or, perhaps, were the Adaro very v-shaped with a dip in volume in the vocal frequencies all along, and you were just able to pick that out after you got used to them? Razer isn’t particularly well-respected for their audio quality.

Sorry to disagree with the “Smartphone.” If one is using a phone that can’t play files like FLAC and WAV it’s a wast af cash getting top end IEM. Stander MP3 sound crap as the way the file is stripped of the noise that is outside the human ear, listening to this kind of file is exasperating as one can hear all the imperfection of the striped file on a top-end player.

I have both 846 and UE11pro 846. Base and sub-base is extremely phenomenal in 846 UE11pro can not reach it at all and event if you are a beginner you will feel it. UE11pro though have better mid range, so if some one speaks you will hear it much more perfect, also UE11pro is louder (better) than 846 by maybe 30% at least sometimes 40%. Tweeter wise I don't know yet because I have to switch 846 to white filter to see how it will increase it, but with software (treble boost option selected) and the balanced filter and wireless TW2 (they sell these with them too) they sound better.

I'm finding it so hard to decide whether to get SE846 or IE800. I think it really depends what you're listening though. Both appear to be very different. From my impression it seems like the SE846's are good all rounders, but for listening to orchestrial, ambient or soundscape, the IE800 it seem like they'll thrive. I hear very enthusiastic responses to how well the soundstage is and also how the high notes sound. I also hear reports of people absolutely loving the bass too. I guess I nede to just try for myself. I can't afford to buy em both though. I also heard that if you get a good enough DAC the SE846's also become as good as the IE800's in its strengths.
