First, I have to say THANK YOU for speaking so clearly and SLOWLY! It is very difficult for us who speak a "non poetically flowing language" such as L'italiano, French or Portuguese to understand where one word ends and another begins. I grew up in an Italian American home. I am second generation American. Evidently when the mass immigration to America from Italy was happening(1880-1924), it was "in style" to drop the last vowel of a vast amount of Italian words. For instance, when we drink we say(in phonetics) "SA-LOOT" instead of "SA-LOO-TAY". Or "MOOT-Za-RELL" instead of "MOOT-ZA-RELL-A". So I grew up mispronouncing a vast number of words. Do you notice this from a large number of Italian Americans?

@stefano_etrusco 7 лет назад
Hello! Dropping word endings, or modifying the last vowel to a sort of indefinite "schwa", is a typical mispronounciation of central/southern Italy, due to the influence of local dialects. Most of the Italian immigrants to North America came from southern Italy, and almost none of them spoke proper Italian back then. So I guess this is the phenomenon you are referring to.

In Croatia we say: Živjeli (if there is more then 3 people), if there is 2 people they will say one to another: Živio! Literally both versions mean 'hope you live' or 'let we live' haha it is hard to explain in english, try to put those words into translator :D
