If it sounds good it works. Doesn't matter what "category" the note, riff or lick falls in to.

@@gyptech942 interesting. So you are not hearing the first chord as “home base”?
@gyptech942

Thats right hear the Fmajor as home.I have always experimented playing say a C blues 145 proression using a G pentatonic scale it seems to work. I definately want to explore Mixolydian and you have inspired me thank you.

@@gyptech942 you mean the 3rd chord of the progression, yes? Hard to wrap my head around that 😎 Have you tried to just outline all 3 chords without any scale thinking?
@gyptech942

@@totalguitartransformation yes I have played around with apreggios and inversions of these chords. I cant get the Fmajor tonalty out of my head to develop a true mixolydian sound

Ulrich, don't make it so hard to simply buy a lesson. I can't stand all these sign up questions. Don't need an evaluation. I just want a lesson. I love what you are doing. I want a lesson with some notes/tabs, whatever. I simply want to learn what you are doing in the video. You don't need my childrens Social Security numbers for that. Please make it easier to just buy a lesson. Just my opinion. Thanks. Love your playing and tone.

I appreciate the input, Jim. If you are not interested in working with me personally you really don't need an evaluation. In that case I can point you to my Hendrix Bootcamp: www.ulrichellisonguitar.com/bootcamp Enjoy!

We appreciate your informative lesson and tips 👍! Maybe it might be helpful if you played the C minor pentatonic scale up and the fret and then the C Major pentatonic scale and the Mixolydian scale. You can almost play all three scale in one position of C major chord with a few note changes 😇! Once you know how to mix the notes on the chord changes you'll be a master 😇👍🎸

Thanks! I do believe though that scale thinking and -practice can hinder players from developing an intuitive improvisational approach. Instead, I prefer to focus on intervals and the actual harmony to be followed. Make sense?

Thank you for a very inspiring lesson. Though I've played these different changes by ear, I've never actually pieced together how they theoretically came together. Especially purposely moving to the A minor blues. This SO reminded me of Toy Caldwell from The Marshall Tucker Band, who was one of the greatest and sadly rarely mentioned anywhere on RU-vid channels or Greatest Players lists. Very well structured and informative!

Love the approach. One of the key takeaways from this video is the fact that you are demonstrating the process for creating a musical “style” of your own. Studying scales and following the rules of theory alone is not the answer to achieving this IMO.

Technically this would be in the key of F because mixolydian starts at the 5th degree which is C. It cannot be in the key of C because C has no sharps or flats. The chord progression is C Major- B flat Major- F Major - back to C Major, making this a V-IV-I-V (5-4-1-5) progression all these chords would be Major chords in the key of F. It just keeps resolving to the 5th being C. You're only playing an F Major scale, but C is where it starts and ends, making it the home base of the song. He's just using some C Major and minor pentatonics to flavor it up. Some cajun spice. Also, he calls F the 4th chord, which it is to C but the key is actually F making it the root of 1 chord. C is actually the 5th F. So always remember if one note is a 5th of the other (E is 5th of A) that note is it's 4th (A is 4th of E) This might sound confusing but it becomes very useful in the long run especially if you familiarize yourself with their locations to each other in scale patterns and chords. They will unlock a lot of doors if you are not familiar with any of this.

It makes absolutely no sense to look at this progression from the key of F, sorry. It is musically wrong, even if you may have all the theory knowledge. Instead, the key center is C, and the harmonic structure is a classic mixolydian progression. Let’s not over complicate things, its “three chords and the truth” 😎
