Hi Tomo hope ur well, just looking over yet another one of your U tube videos amazing , I have now been with your guitar wisdom for 3 month and already see an improvement in my playing and knowledge more than I have achieved over many years of playing wish I had found you years ago looking forward to what’s to come. Thank you so much , Best wishes Steve🎸
I've been going through a lot of your videos the past several months and it has done wonders for my playing ability. In my 20 years of playing guitar, I've done a lot of learning to run before walking, and it's led me to this awkward spot I'm in now where I've developed a lot of bad habits I'm having to unlearn and rework. Now that I'm starting to get serious about my playing, your videos have done a lot to put me on the right track. Thank you so much for sharing all your invaluable knowledge.
Thank you so much for sharing! Learning guitar is like... having more bad habits naturally unless you are aware those "bad habits" Those bad habits can grow naturally so well just like "Weeds" You are doing a great job "Noticing" and "Changing" I am so happy! You're very welcome!
Triads were my Aha! moment. Once you start seeing these sneaky little triad patterns across the fretboard, it makes so much sense as to you know what should be played over a particular chord. Thanks a ton Tomo for helping me visualize these patterns on the guitar. Love from India!
love your Guitar Wisdom courses and all the great RU-vid videos you do. I think it would be cool to have you teach a song and break it down for us. Thanks Tomo
So happy to hear that. I have so many lesson videos at my Guitar Wisdom and I am hoping that my subscribers can use these videos as supplemental source. I will do more songs. Thank you!
Tomo is 100% right about using your ears, and not bothering with tabs. I have been playing for 10 years mostly “self taught” and I quit looking up tabs, chord sheets and videos of how to play songs. No matter what genre of music you want to play focus on the notes, and build the muscle memory. None of Tomos most successful students sound like him at all.
@@Redtrays woodshed it as hard as they wrote it, and you will be a great copycat. You want to be the next chon or polyphia, work as hard as them to sound as much like yourself as possible.
I can humbly confirm that he hit the nail on my head. After twenty years of having a guitar and thinking I could just do some David Gilmour bends, I am stuck on shapes...STUCK! Sad.
Hey Tomo sensei, I have a question - I have heard that memorizing the whole fretboard is how you become good at soloing. If so, then how should I memorize the fretboard? Is there any technique?
That's not really true! Easy to say and not so correct. Memorize is easy. After you memorize them so you know exactly where the notes are... but soloing is like telling a story... do you have any great stories to tell?
You need some foundation. Please watch these lessons (Super Simple) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-85RmFmRgTiw.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-weI70XnBogY.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uATDB1csCf0.html
I tell me students to stop playing scales, and arpeggios, during their improvs. Ironically, it usually means playing a simple phrase with feeling. A lot of that is from you. Thanks Tomo.
"The problem is you're chasing shapes " ! This right away is so true and such a simple and obvious truth too. Probably more than I'm aware of! That slightly frustrating feeling of "this just doesn't seem musical or freely improvised, it seems boring and predictable " there's no magic, but there must be ways and approaches that can change one's "ear" and playing.
Easy way is always has some catch that... not so good overall! Quick satisfaction! Practicing part, techniques ... not musical. But once you got material down then you can apply into music! Smart people tends to think... If I know these, I can improvise like that? Ear Training is so important!
I have been away from your teaching for a several months. Accident that ended in whiplash, and no guitar since Jan. Watching this session was like seeing an old friend that I haven't seen for a long time. Thank you old friend/teacher! I am getting back on schedule with things I love, like learning more about the guitar. You make learning guitar fun Mr. MUSIC!
I hope I'm understanding correctly, are you suggesting not to just improvise using popular major/minor pentatonic or major scales or scales in general but rather arpeggios from chord inversions from the chords being played ? I really want to understand, thanks.
I just discovered you and ive watched five of your videos now including this one. I've been playing guitar since i was literally a baby, completely self taught and you have convinced me that I know nothing. I'm signing up for guitar wisdom reeeaaallly soon. Just a side note:I think youre about to help me quit drinking.
Thank you so much! Great plan! Guitar Wisdom is very special place! Once you hook with guitar. You will be healthy & positive person. Drink more water and tea!
Arigato Tomo.... Love your lessons , the way you teach makes it feel like i'm in the same room as you.... So natural and relaxed , like a Guitar Sensei and Zen Master at once.... 🙏🍀
Tomo. I spent 4 hours since i started this lesson watching and playing and practicing. Man ,sometimes you find exactly what youre looking for and need and i csnt thank you enough for the giant boost of betterness in my playing . You da mannn.
Its curious but for me, you are a OKAY guitarist, no legato, weird sound, no colour and no dynamics on your playing. And i think is because you play the guitar on the teorical and not human way. Im a OkEy guitarist for you btw. Take care you are a great teacher.
Tomo! Your Gold Guitar, name on the Head stock looks like it says "Keaggy"? But funny that my first electric guitar, man was that thing cheap!!! warped neck.was A Telstar...... same Gold color.... Great lesson!!!
Tomo, this isn't you...what's with the cap, and all that hip movement, you're better off being yourself, you're an amazing guitar teacher and a player, please be our own natural self, you're more cooler that way :)
05/07/23 - (a suggestion) B4 the lesson, could you mabey point out what gear you're using, I would like to know what your plugged into to get that tone) - a beautiful guitar > one of my favorite colours for an S style guitar. Thank you for the lesson. It helps/motivates ME to keep on getting for once and for all too play guitar to express what I want to. 🧡💛💚 - L.R.K.
Thing is, I understand theory okay, but I think my motorskills is just limited at this level of capability of OKAY guitarist. I don't do fast, while I want to. Do I need to? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I can understand what's happening but can't always follow the tempo/speed, sigh.
Great lesson Tomo Sensei. You know, you actually had 9 tips? First, you played a repeating motif in your improvisation over the chord changes. Second, you also played double stops - major and minor 6ths. There you go: two additional tips. 😉
You need to make "Shut up and practice" t-shirts. Thanks for a great lesson. I like the Be kind to yourself a lot, but sometimes you just need to go do stuff.
Hi Tomo. As always, great wisdom. I've been playing for many years and now I've learned even some new ways of playing guitar because of your wisdom and teaching skills. God bless and be safe.
Hello Tomo , I am practicing my theory knowledge and something in the video has me very confused. You explained the we are in the key of B minor and that the V chord is F#7 , a major chord. Every resource I have checked says that the V chord of a minor key is a minor chord. IN the video you explain that it isn't as rigid or clean cut as we would hope but any additional detail you could provide would be very useful. Would the more advance theory subject you mention towards the end (where you mention playing B harmonic minor over the F#7) help me clear up my misunderstanding?
Thanks for sharing! You need to know more foundation! Please check this video. I’ve been playing 52 years and I enjoy listening to your videos. Still so much to learn and keep in mind. Thank you for doing what you do, great stuff.
Hey Tomo, another guitar player here: is there anyway I could get in contact with you? I do watch some of your yt videos but I was wondering so that I could ask like questions. I’m pretty stuck with where I’m at. At the moment I want to work more on my technique, melodic/harmonic playing, rhythm, as well as singing and ear training. Any tips would be appreciated!
You can join my Guitar Wisdom so that you can learn everything much deeper. I don't do personal assistant. If you need personal attention, I teach via Skype Lessons where you can ask personal questions. Thank you!
I think All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix/Dylan would be a great one to see you work on! I believe there's some very simple theory, but it sits in a very cool harmonic pendulum. And has some similar fills to the SRV two note part. Great path/lesson as always Mr. Fujita, it's amazing to be getting so much knowledge for free from a university level professor!
It takes me a few watches to get through your videos because I grab my guitar and try out what your saying. Thank you for all the wonderful lessons and general good vibes, your videos always brighten my day!
My pleasure! Thank you so much! I Wish All My Students Knew THESE Before They Came To Berklee ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xlRy7WwZg7c.html
Your channel is such a inspiration. Imma 52 year old that has been playing guitar, buy guitar magazines since childhood. I still want to get better and to see people wanting to help others makes me realize we’re all here tomhelp other. Plus we can learn stuff from all people no matter what level of playing your at weather your the person teaching or the one looking for info.
What a great lesson! I heard you play this rhythm on that previous clip and have been playing along and it’s so fun! I’m going to expand with this lesson because aside from bouncing out of the B minor boxes, I pretty much stick to the minor. I think I accent well but loving this lesson. Lots to learn! Thank you!
Even Tomo has to tiptoe around theory as if he was encouraging people to do something wrong. Dude, learn theory, simple as that. Nobody ever said" "Theory made me a worse musician."
Legend! I got my strat from Mr. Music when I was a student. I lived three blocks away from Berkeley and was working/studying at Boston Children's. Boy would I have loved to study music there...
Tomo, out of all of the youtube channels I watch related to guitar learning, I never feel like I am wasting my time with your teachings and lessons..thankyou🙏
All due respect master Tomo...no one is going to get to any level of respect as a guitarist or a recording contract playing like this....not even you. I mean no disrespect but this direction is not going anywhere
Hello Tomo , thanks our Dear to make of this videos that I just discover, that is really nice and helpful for everyone. Here, on this videos, you did something that just blown my mind , the first 2 minutes, that sort of easy approach which resume in one or two licks onr after the other the way we can have to approach a lead guitar, make colors, or linking ideas together. That s just perfect and gave me a total new direction to write, organise, archive idea/technique on a simple loop rhythmic. My Dear, if you can go in one other video the same way to show how, by theorie, we can approach and resume all this differents laws/ modes in a simple licks, one after one, that would be amazing! God.bless you and thanks for all this work and sharing mate !!
You're very welcome! My pleasure! So happy to hear that! One topic! No mixed up! Very important to talk about only one topic! You're very smart! Thank you so much!
I stopped playing 30-plus years ago I recently picked up a guitar, I never actually learned how to play, I always played by ear... Your videos are inspiring me to start over and take my time to learn, AKA, understand the theory behind the music.
This guy would be helpdful if I could tell what he's doing. He doesn't like tab, but doesn't show what the heck chord he's playing, and plays some of them oddly, like with onr finger coverning two strings. Just show the darn tab once for each chord, darn it, or say what you're playing, or get a camera angle that doesn't have your fist in the way of where your fingers are fretting. I can replay as much or as little as I need to, but darn it you never show what chord you are playing and how you are playing it. You just keep playing them and saying their names in a heavy accent. Very very frustrating. His advice seems so useful and simple, but for playing over the chord changes, START BY SHOWING THE CHORDS!!! When he plays Bminor it looks like he's missing a finger on the 9th fret. He keeps saying A flat 7th but never shows how to play it. Can't tell by looking at his left hand, maybe he is using his pinkie? Then he keeps calling A7th A flat 7th but this doesn't look like A flat, I think he's trying to say to flat the 7th, and the nornal name for that is A minor 7th, about the easiest chord to play. But that doesn't look like what he's playing, it looks like he's playing A major 7th but he never says either. I give up, it would sure help if he spoke english or showed diagrams or explained the fingering. He keeps saying "flat 7" so I guess he means A major 7th...I wish he'd use the correct name. So he says "you have to know the chords and a litte theory behind" but doesn't try to show them?
Thank you so much for sharing! I teach a lot more details at my Guitar Wisdom. I love guitar education & Performance. So much fun once you have a solid foundation. I show each chords (Positions & Intervals) on Lunch Time Lesson at 1;00pm EST everyday day! You can learn so much! Please watch this video. God bless you !!!
Oh,, Yes,. coin that Term "Shape Chasers" -- Here's a thought. Human nature desires rules then it isn't their fault. They require a guidebook. Truly in Music there are no "rules" there is only Math. There are many suggestions, like if you're playing in the Key G to start and end your song on a G so the listener understands that you just played in G. But it is only a suggestion. People are generally lazy. Many of the more delicious songs people enjoy change Keys, TIme and Metre from people that understand. There really are No Rules in Music. Only accepted standards and guides. ~❤🕯🎸🎼🌹❤🎶🎶 Fighting my lack of Rules in a World of people saying Must was and is a difficulty. One woman said. "I don't understand your music. I like it. I just don't understand". I told her. "Imagine your journey down a river with bends, turns and momentary turbulence." Then the lightbulb came on.
Nothing will be instant! Everything has steps and anyone can follow those steps if you are willing to learn them! You can watch this video 3 times from the top to the bottom and write me back! Good efforts always will come back to you as great results. Nothing will jump out to you! (My wife always says)
I can understand you because I learned theory from learning keyboard. I learned guitar for years and never learned much music theory, learning scales was too bothering, I just knew the chords. Now that I know scales more it's easier for me to build out chords myself, as well as improvise. Like you said about the counting system, it's all intervals
Excellent lesson, Tomo! One thing I notice a LOT is that nobody ever talks about repeating notes! Repeating notes while using different rhythms can be very effective! Love your lessons!
Mr.Tomo I was subscribed to wisdom the triplets man what a way to play guitar your a 100% all around Vertuoso San the best in this earache of music as soon as a get ahead on my funds I'll be back to me it is the best deal in the music interest and one thing you can speak English, Japanese maybe other languages but most of all you can speak, comunucate, express the language of music I guess your tri lingual of quad lingual and I Love you for it wow factor 100% oh and your one COOL KATT....Roland aka RocknRollFlat5
I wonder if you have seen a Japanese finger picking guitarist Kent Nishimura 19 now I think. He has a lot of Chicago, Toto, Steely Dan you can hear every instrument and vocals when he plays, 25 or 6 to 4 he is doing Terry Kaths solo while still doing drums and bass at the same time. Maybe you can help him(college age) or breakdown how he does what he does it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e8W2KoooUzg.html, Micheal Jacksoru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pkk24x1x3YIn.html , at Tommy Emmanuels concert ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CwH4myjkt4o.html
