Just wondering how you reckon this compares to the Headrush MX5 which I already have for home recording? Only thing missing from the Headrush that annoys me is the ability to edit on computer as you have to do everything via the built-in touchscreen which is fine, but not ideal. Wondering whether to get one of these as well as it seems more straightforward for amp models and IRs?
I have to admit, I am a big fan of NUX. Their MLD Bass preamp is my most valued pedal!!! Just gotta love it, smart feature set and great price! Also, this seems like the guitar version, very similar features and software.
Is Stereo possible? Yes I believe it is. You will need a 2 channel or more interface. I'm a recording engineer aswell as a guitarist.. Record from the amp academy DI out XLR into chanell one of your audio interface into your DAW. Impulse response ON (as Colin demonstrated) Go from the amp academy quarter inch out into a power IR OFF (behringer 100 watt power amp is fine, it's cheap to buy) from the power amp connect a speaker cab I use a 2 x 12 but 1 x 12 will do (check out the ohms).. Then just mic up the speaker (SM57 will do the job) and connect the mic to channel 2 on your audio interface..record both channels at once panned left and right. Two different sounds recorded at once both via the amp academy... There are other ways to do this.. I prefer the above.. Big sound... Let me know your thoughts.. 😊
Looks like a pedal version of what's in the NUX MG-30. I've got the MG-30 and it's no joke. Great compact modeler; useful for almost any application, home or live. Just wish it had the XLR out and IR options for it!
I use the NUX Solid Studio at the end of my pedal chain for recording. It has a variety of amps and cabs, with variable accuracy, but there are one or two extremely useful ones. It also models a number of popular mics as well. I like it, and this Amp Academy looks like an improvement.
I just ordered mine and can't wait to play with it !! This video is by far the best demo of this pedal !! These Room Mic tones sound amazing !! It shows us that finding the perfect matching IRs (to our taste) is key to unlock the potential.
Best modeler pedal I've ever seen. Great features. I have played around with several modeling pedals. My latest and probably my last was the digitech rp 1000. Ever since I got my Blackstar amp with direct out and power attenuation, I haven't touched my modeling gear, except maybe for late night headphone sessions.
Damn this is like my atomic ampli-firebox, just better. This has so many features, that I desperatley want my ampli-firebox to have, like headphones and usb out, fx loop and banks that you can switch with your foot. I always felt that the ampli-firebox sounded amazing but was unnecessarily limited in its functionality. The NUX seems to have all of those functions. Might have to buy one of those and sell my ampli-firebox. 👀
The first thing I thought of when I saw it was the Atomic Ampli-Firebox. Apparently, they've upgraded the Firebox with the "Firebox MK II" which DOES include a headphones out. Sadly, there still isn't an fx loop but it does have more amp sims but less od pedals. There seem to be a lot of similarities but still some significant differences and it'd be interesting to see a side by side comparison to see if there really is enough of a difference to warrant the extra $100 or so for a new Firebox.
"Throw way your amplifier" says the man who still owns a reel to reel : ) On the real side, thanks for a nicely done demo and a good bit of enthusiasm, both are appreciated. Cheers!
The first amp I ever owned was a NUX. I hated my first guitar and my first multi effects pedal, but the amp was the only relatively decent part of my rig.
After buying my little Orange tube amp and then my dream Marshall tube amp, I no longer need most of my pedals. These amps make the sounds I crave. But I do still hold to my delay, fuzz and wah like baby toys.
This is awesome. I've been using an inexpensive modeler fro a bit now, and I decided a couple months ago that I am more than likely never going to buy another traditional amplifier. I even bought a pedalboard sized power amp to plug it into a cab. My ultimate goal is a Kemper or AXEFX, but that's a ways away. I've been at it for 25 years and I wish this stuff was this amazing when i started out. I would probably be a lot better.
the laney la studio has a two notes ir loader built in. hopefully they'll also take the technology to their other amplifier lines (like the ironheart and digbeth) or even better other amp companies will follow laney and add an ir loader to their amps
Would you ever consider doing a video on how to set up and use a oscilloscope/DAW to see the frequency response of different gear? I love the videos where you get in depth on these things, I'd love to know what is involved and how to do it.
I second this! I recently purchase an oscilloscope myself. There’s definitely a niche in the market there for a scientific approach to sound for guitarists and musicians.
Count me in as not interested... Would you need a scientific visual graphic display to inform you if you are experiencing a good orgasm or not !!!??? Regarding guitar tone, I've been playing since the mid 1970s and have learned to rely on those odd looking flappy growths of skin and gristle on either side of my head. That, and my own experienced judgement of what sounds good or shite.... and I am no technophobe - as I've been ahead of the game in music computer technology for decades longer than most of you ocd newbies have learned to adapt from Teletubbies to Marvel super heroes ..
@@garycrant4511 it’s definitely not needed, but I enjoy tinkering and learning the “why” with a lot of things. Good example would be the relationship between humidity and the feeling of being hot when it may be a lower temperature than the day before yet you weren’t hot then (I’m in Australia). In terms of the analogy of a good orgasm, I guess it would be what specifically got you to where you wanted? Like was it wearing cuffs, having someone else in charge, being tasered, or not being able to get away from her chest hair which is pure shock factor 😂
They really thought of everything in this product. I've been waiting to see who makes such an all encompassing amp/cab sim pedal. Who would have thought it would be NUX
Very nice. Ever since the 'tube crisis' that kicked off months ago, I've been moving toward solid-state alternatives to tube amps. Ended up getting a Helix LT and a Hughes & Kettner Ampman Classic, but may give this a shot as well. Looks like a lot of features to be had in one box.
Colin! Great vid. Would you do a vid on using an oscilloscope to measure frequency response? I recently purchased an oscilloscope after being inspired by your vids and would love to see a little more know how for starting out ☺️
Already dropped my amps.. but for a Two Notes Torpedo CAB M+, I'm happier with my rig and have more flexible tones. Not lugging an amp around, not having to worry about tubes (valves), not having to mic the cab.. all super handy to have. If you are already getting much of your tone from pedals, just go digital for your 'amps' as making a clean pedal platform digital amp is really simple and using IR's is a no brainer
I'm running the Blackstar dual drive for an amp replacement and have been enjoying it. It's got a couple issues but can't justify going to Strymon or walrus's but this seems like a good option.
Great demo.. I'm needing something like this as I can't justify an AxeFx or Kemper for instance, but this would be great as a pedal board amp with some other pedals in the loop. I play at places that make you go direct or use their ISO box, etc.. So, I'd rather use something like this and it has those scenes I had no idea about.. Very cool.. Thanks again!
For many uses this will work quite well. Cabinet IRs are not a problem but the amplifier IRs tend to fall down for "edge of distortion" use where light playing is not distorted and hard playing is and all the in between sounds. However, many people use that straight ahead full distortion mode and this looks to work perfectly for that. I think for "edge of distortion" the emulator needs to use analog circuitry or digital emulation rather than IRs. I have an old Tech 21 TRI-O.D. That sounds pretty good into a solid state amp with a 12inch speaker or a cabinet IR. Emulating a "broken" sound is actually quite hard it turns out. Being able to switch from dirty to clean will just work for most people. Good review, Thanks.
I don't care for the NUX wireless, I had to return them because it didn't work with my equipment. However this pedal looks like it would fit all of needs I have and a very portable practice set up!
I was so happy with the tones I got from my AA pedal that I haven't used my gigging amp in months. I play weekly in a function band and cover jazz cleans, 50s twangy guitars, 80s Rock and metal. This little pedal covers it all . Unfortunately a lot of the other reviews I have seen are by RU-vidrs who dont understand how to fully operate the pedal and claim their are issues which is a shame as they should really understand how to use it before making a video.
If you have the nux mg300 what would be your reason to get this instead? The simplicity of setting up sounds on mg300 is just phenomenal. Is there an advantage besides xlr out in terms of usability/features?
I bought amp academy last week, my opinion amp academy is for people who already have other pedals like delay, reverb, modulations etc., that is why amp academy keep send/return function.
@@rickwang5367 this!!! I love my analog pedals but i need to reduce space on my pedalboard, so with the amp academy i can remplace the DRIVE, REVERB AND IR SIMULATOR (3 pedals) with one BUT keeping the other pedals.
Colin! I have a TATA! Since it's pickup related, I left it just now on your pickups TATA video, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to just through it on your most recent video as well, just to be sure you see it. 😁 I just recently learned about a guitar called a Gibson Blueshawk, and upon looking into it, I was introduced to the concept of dummy coils or dummy pickups. All I've been able to gather is that they somehow reduce (maybe eliminate?) 60 cycle hum in a single coil pickup. I've watched a few videos that show just removing the magnets from a single coil pickup and then soldering this coil electrically in with the other pickups. However, I don't really "get it." Why? How? Huh? It looks like just adding a bunch of wire into a chain, or sort of like a second coil in a humbucker. But if it doesn't have magnets in it, how does it do anything significant? If it does implement humbucking, then is the wire is the important part? Why do humbuckers have magnets in the second coil in that case? Why/how would this coil affect hum, rather than just adding a bunch of resistance to a pickup, making really muddy (or bright?) or something? Once I figured out that this was a rabbit hole I was going to get lost in, I thought, I bet Colin could explain this. So, my official TATA question is what is a dummy coil, what does it do, and how does it work?
Would be interesting to see a comparison between this and the Strymon Iridium. Seems like this has more functionality, more amp models, and is literally half the price! The NUX MG-30 is only about $40 more though, so if they have just used the exact same amp models/algorithms for this pedal it feels like you get a lot more with just buying the MG-30. If the amps in this pedal sounds a lot better I can see the value in buying this instead.
I have an Iridium on my main board and also own an Nux MG-30. There's no doubt that the Nux amps with external IR's are just as good (or better if considering the variety of amps) as the Iridium. I think the only thing lacking in this is stereo options. It's not a huge deal if you decide to have stereo delays and reverbs after this pedal in the chain, as you could go mono into those pedals and let them split stereo and then into an interface or powered speakers. However, if you wanted to hear your stereo delays and reverbs through the headphone jack of the unit, you are out of luck with the Amp Academy. That being said, to hear stereo effects through the Iridium, you have to have them prior to the amps, which means you have to run the Iridium amps very clean. On my board, that's what I do. I run stereo modulation, delays, and reverbs into the front of the Iridium on the Chime channel set pretty clean. That way I can use the headphone out and hear glorious stereo. In that setup, I really have to use overdrive and distortion pedals to get different amp tones. However, if stereo isn't a huge deal, this absolutely checks all the boxes and then sum in comparison to the Iridium.
Wow crazy this showed up in my playlist when it was over a year ago I was looking into and buying on of these...it was a decent enough pedal, I used it alot for awhile but I sold it after I got my Arena 2000 and that's been my everything pedal since I got it
That's sooo awesome! Thanks for the review. Does the headphone out signal really sound like your recording? Can you give more details on how to connect it into a cabinet? If I understand correctly = Guitar -> Amp Academy (IR off) -> Power amp (such as Mooer Baby Bomb 30) -> Cabinet (such as Orange PPC112).
Yeah, powered FRFR cab will take those IRs like a champ. That's the beauty of having such flexible outputs on a device like this, every situation is catered for.
Holy shit, this was better than i thought. I was thinking to pair it with a nux tubeman as a boost, and nux solid studio as a cabsim. But now i know, I don't need those two 😂
A competitor to Joyo's Preamp House. Both great units. I think the Joyo has excellent preamp sims. I use a Hotone AMP + a NUX Solid Studio and it is an excellent DI rig. I want to grab a NUX Cerberus for a plug 'n play, no pedals or amp required, late night headphone jam option. Used to own one and foolishly sold it. Don't know anything about modeling so i like products like this Amp Academy, the Cerberus, Solid Studio etc. NUX products are no joke. Their Verdugo series pedals are excellent. I have 3 on my board (Masamune, Atlantic, Duotime) and they are keepers. Brand snobs be damned!
Wow! Excellent. This is why I'm subscribed to you. I can watch a full video. At random and I feel like I was just chatting with it old friend about the coolest guitar shit.
Got the MG-30 so "I" don't need this, but someone else might. I'm trying to figure the use case for this vs the MG-30. Price is less so maybe that? Best Regards and Best Wishes.
I’ve had mixed experiences with Nu-X. I use their Stageman preamp pedal for my acoustics and that has been pretty solid, but the Atlantic delay and reverb that I bought around the same time developed a mysterious woosh and subsequently died about the time that the warranty expired. My third gadget from the brand is a tuner which on paper seemed the perfect fit for me but in practice has been uncooperative when using my passive-piezo guitars. So while Nu-X may be an option for those of us who are in tight budgets, be advised that you may have to pay twice.
Best video on how these things work. Question, in the Fender sims, going to headphones, is there a way to get both reverb and tremolo at the same time?
I’m a pro and I’ve got the mg-30 which is the same as this with a few sides, and no XLR out. I’m liking it and if it gets pinched by the United airlines luggage handler I’m not that but hurt.
Damn, this sounds good - most amp modelers I have tried just don't sound realistic. This would make an impressive studio recording tool - since it's hardware based, no need to worry about using DSP resources in your DAW.
I just sold my Helix Floor/Powercab+ set up as it was overkill for me (too much time messing about with sounds, not enough just playing). This or the Iridium (over the internet at least) sound more usable to me.
in this you mention not having to need a guitar amp for live but also mentioned going through a power amp, am I wrong in assuming a power amp is an amp head? genuine question I'm confused to F.
NUX make rock solid gear. Hughes & Kettner put out their own little Stompman thing that's around the same price, but this looks like it's got way more versatility and the HK certainly isn't an amp modeller. Looks really cool.
They say 1.2 mW, which is basically unnoticeable. If you stand 10 feet away from a tube amp cabinet you already have around 8ms due to the speed of sound ;)
I am seriously considering of getting rid of my orange tiny terror for this. The thing is bloody noisy and I would rather have this pedal in my board for live performances with IR and headphone practice, what concerns me is how good it actually sound and whether it has this micro latency like most digital processors do
Can you connect simultaneously, DI to the console with the nux emu amplifier, and the output, to a real amplifier without the emu amp (cause you conect out to ream amp) , without delays or lags and sound simultaneously un the console and the real amp, in a real situation?
This might actually be the very thing that I'm looking for. I'm a bass main, and so I can get very good recording plugging in direct instead of playing through an amplifier. I lack a great understanding on amps, and besides the fact, I live in an apartment and can't do loud speakers to get a recording. Nor can I afford a nice amp head, cabinet, and microphone in order to capture the full span of the sound of a guitar. And yet, I want better tone than my Berhinger Guitar DI box. Sometimes I record guitar completely clean and use amp settings on Finale, but there are many unsatisfying things about this experience. Sometimes I use the amp-sims in my guitar DI box, but the tones don't work well in the recording with the rest of the song. This seems to fix every issue I'm having in trying to get a good guitar tone for a musician who plays guitar as a tertiary instrument at best (Bass primary, cello secondary, piano or guitar tertiary). And to cap it all of, this thing is under $200? This is definitely worth looking more into.
I cannot be physically separated from my valves for more than a day. It’s a weird thing I don’t want to get into right now...🤣 The IR integration is huge; I have hundreds. Q: can you utilize a separate IR for L and R channels? That could save me a LOT of cpu time in LPX! Prob for me re stomp pedals is I have not found one with OD/Dist that I like. I feel constricted, over-compressed using modeled options...
Okay, the feature of splitting the signal to FOH thru DI with IR AND to a poweramp/cab without IR sold it to me. Also what are you using as poweramp for that specific demonstration? Thanks!
I’m interested to know whether the signal coming from the xlr output is line level, or if it’s quieter like it would be from a DI. I’d love to find an amp and cab sim that doesn’t need a line isolator like the walrus canvas to get strong signal to front of house.
This is actually the first time I've gone to like a video twice: I liked IMMEDIATELY after that Basement Internet Dweller bit at the beginning and then went to like it again as soon as the first tone came on. I've already got the NUX MG30, so I can't really justify getting this one, even though it looks way cooler. Awesome video again, mate.
