You are like the magician who reveals how the “magic” is done. It can seem as if it’s only the few, gifted at birth, who can make it work but it’s simply learning how it’s done. You are a master of unlocking, revealing and teaching the vocal/recording “magic” for us all to learn and enjoy. I have personally benefited more than I ever thought possible. Thank you once again 🙏🥰

You are so right. When I first started your classes I resisted the "line-by-line" approach. Man, have I seen a difference since I started in your classes. I'm having more fun, sounding much better and singing with more freedom and feeling. This video is so important. I am sincerely grateful for what I'm learning from you and for the community of singers that you have created.

I use an LCT 440, great mic, but at one point I just couldn't get the performance I wanted from myself for a cover while at home. was in my head too much about the people around me, my technique, etc. so I went to my car and did the takes using my iPhone 12 to record and it sounded infinitely better than anything I was managing to do at home. half the song was done on the 440, half on the iPhone, and after some tweaking, nobody I asked could even notice :D

Dude so true!!!! Even "line by line" sometimes isnt what you hear, they will chop and cherry pick the best sounding WORD out of dozens of takes, mix and match, even adding P's B's F's TH's sounds onto words that dont have them. People dont realize truly how heavily audio on their favorit records can be manipulated HARD. Never realized this until I saw how easy it was personally by working in a DAW. If the free dinky programs I use are this powerful, imagine what a bonafide studio can do to process audio. Its insane and truly show me the meaning of "produced" audio.

Chris, I think it'd be nice that, since you're getting into Ado, it'd be nice if you listened to an artist I'm a fan of named Sodikken. I'd suggest listening to their most popular track, Hansel. They've got really nice vocal range.

Hey Chris plzzz plzzzz plzzzzz can you make a tutorial of how to watch your videos the correct way in order.And what videos of yours to watch before deciding later to warm up.What to do after a warm up?Should I immediately sing after warming my voice?How many warm up videos of yours a day for hitting high notes?Basically a tour guide tutorial like video about with what video of Chris liepe to start and end before trying to practice the songs.I think this is very important cause when you watch the videos in order or correct way you avoid shocking the voice.Tell us wich time this,wich time that ya know???🙏

What you're asking for is a step-by-step, guided approach to my methods... This is exactly what I offer in my course Discover Your Voice! My RU-vid videos are designed as quick, helpful nuggets, but there is no order. There IS in my course as well as guided practice, personal interaction, practice tools, tracks, PDFs and lots of other helpful, methodical ways of engaging with your voice, me and others if you so choose :) . You can learn more about Discover Your Voice at chrisliepe.com and request an invitation if you like :) !! I hope we get to work together!

Thanks, I'm moved :D I've made some covers, but I really lack experience (and a studio). I like your tips, I'm trying to work on a song with different mentality than before and with my brother we're looking to buy a microphone and set up a place. Exactly as you said, perfect technique is definitely good but that's far from being everything and it's not even what most people listen to.

I practised one line out of one of my songs today for well over an hour. Yep im that bad And that determined to improve. One take attitude is daft for learning. You always have easy and difficult oarts in the piece. Why waste time doing the easy parts again. On a side note. Recording your vocals is BY FAR the best way to hear your errors. Often times you have no idea how appalling you are until you hear yourself recorded 😂

I've watched many vocalist channels and this guy nails the fundamentals of feeling your voice and being your own best true vocalist every time he talks about it. Off the back of what Chris says about emoting and moving your placement and mouth around and keeping things dynamic, I found things in me i didn't know existed. Not only does he teach you what and how to do, he inspires you to bring it out. Love you Chris. Forever grateful.

So inspiring and encouraging as well - I used to think practicing a line a hundred times in different was a sign of me not being good enough … it’s very helpful to get some insight into how professionals approach a song and to find out that they, too, may require dozens of takes to deliver a song in such a way that they’re happy with the result - and can repeat it on stage due to the muscle memory they developed. Thank you! 🙏

Hi Chris. Since I first saw you on Graham's channel a few years ago, I've been following your channel and although my vibrato and distortion is still almost non existent, my vocal resonance and range have improved drastically. Your advice and encouragement to not shy away from experimenting with one's voice has been a huge influence on my development. Also, your production tips are gold. I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Kind regards,Alex from South Africa.

Can you do a reaction to the vocals of Reignwolfs song Keeper
@WDShorty
@WDShorty 3 месяца назад
Sing past or at an empty space beside the mic while it's 6 inches or more(never less) away from your mouth aiming it at your mouth will get you much more natural sounding recordings, extremely light compression(threshold only compressing the loud belts with ratio at 4 max) and no eq or only +1/-1 db with a wide Q(which you shouldn't need) on a condenser mic will help you get a much more natural sounding recordings(the human brain can tell when something's wrong, the key here is when you're singing with hopefully in ear monitors and direct monitoring the mic while recording with the backing track playing, when you sing you can hear yourself. If you can't hear yourself in your monitors even when your levels seem correct, you're singing incorrectly in some way and need to correct it, it's not the eq or mic gain, it's you
@gabejohnston1556
@gabejohnston1556 3 месяца назад
Sure, this is one way to do it. Certainly not the only way. For example: Compression hitting 4 max? Nope. Totally depends on the vocalist and the song. I'm hitting 10+ regularly on the Distressor for aggressive or very dynamic vocals. No eq? Why? Also depends on the singer and the song. Try to get out of the 'one right way to do things' mentality. It's extremely limiting.

@chrisliepe

Cause it doesn’t matter ultimately. It’s about the performance! Not about the mic technique. If you have to sacrifice one of those it’s the technical stuff

Chris, watching Japanese bands thanks to your analysis, noticed that singers at large concerts use aerosols (by inhaling), is this some kind of means of protecting the voice? Maybe you can tell us about additional means of reducing voice strain?

I have a question about Layne Staley. He seems to have two different modes for high notes. Sometimes, when he sings Would? live, his voice range seems to top out on those G sharps and on the A. But when he sings Love, Hate, Love or Man In The Box, he gets up to those notes and beyond without his voice seemingly topping out. When I try to sing high notes, my voice tops out on the g sharp. How do I do what Layne does to get past that and go beyond with a chesty sound or a chesty mix sound?
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 3 месяца назад
By using dynamic placement and learning to move your resonance around on the fly! This is what Layne is doing! It’s less about hitting notes and more about the experience of different vocal textures. The increased range is a byproduct! I can help you with this starting in my free course linked in the video description and then we blow things wide open in my course Discover Your Voice!

@@chrisliepe I suffer Chris, I am 'an amateur' mixer, sound engineer/masterer .. been doing it 5 years now and work strictly with people with great skill on the mic in terms of spitting and singing *but* the things I have to deal with cause me serious headaches. Bleeding hihats/beats in recordings, people punch recording and doing it in completely different sound environments.. Bloody hard work.

what your stand on pitch correction while mixing the vocal? I find myself refraining to use tools like melodyne as I feel like it’s cheating, it’s against my moral values. If I am too off in pitch and cannot make it sound good without artificially tweaking the pitches piece by piece to exact note, I feel like it’s a big sign to practice and improve and be real!! Really want to know your stand, as the mainstream music has normalised pitch correction like using an EQ on tracks!!
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 3 месяца назад
Any kind of pitch correction is a last resort for me or vocalists I’m working with. I rarely use it on my own voice because I feel like I can hear it and there’s an inhuman quality that always shows itself. I much prefer to just practice and sing it til get it right. There are some instances where I nail a performance from an emotional and connected standpoint though but a note here and there could tightened up so that the actual performance really comes through to the conditioned listeners of today (expecting pitch pitch accuracy beyond what is realistic) and I’ll try to correct some minor passing notes or even a main note from time to time. A lot of times that doesn’t work though and I need to re sing it :) I don’t know ever just slap a pitch correction plugin on a track and let it do its thing. I manually graph(when and if I do it) in little spots as my ear reveals possibilities. The fact is, every vocal you listen to since about 1998 has some degree of digital pitch correction on it. Even before auto tune , they’d pitch correct by changing tape speeds, using outboard pitch manipulation boxes and more! In my opinion, it’s not whether or not it is used, it is how it is used. Is it serving human and emotional connection, or is it detracting from it?
@aritra.mondal.ganguly
@aritra.mondal.ganguly 3 месяца назад
@@chrisliepe thanks a ton Chris for the detailed reply. I got your point, it’s 99% the actual singing (with all your heart and emotion). Manual pitch correction can aid here and there if it really requires, contributing that additional 1% refinement!!
@gabejohnston1556
@gabejohnston1556 3 месяца назад
My rule for pitch correction: If you can hear the artifacts, you need a better take. But pitch correction is a part of modern recording and mixing, like it or not.
