For a consistent reveal when installing casing on a window I take a scrap piece of 2" x 4" and make a rabbit cut on all 4 sides of this scrap the exact size that I want the casing reveal to be. I then use this block to set my reveal as I nail the casing in place. Easy and cheap. Pro tip for cutting vertical door casing, install the top horizontal casing piece first and then cut a 45 degree angle on your 2 vertical casing pieces - the length being left wild. Place each piece of vertical casing in place on the door frame with the 45 on the floor, now simply mark the top of each piece where they line up with the top of the horizontal casing - cut your 90's and install. No measuring, easy peasy lemon squeezy! I also glue my casing joints. Great videos, keep up the awesome work!

How would putting your 45s at the bottom and marking the board where the top of the casing work. You would be short because the short point of the 45 gives the reveal. So when you cut it and flip the board over you'll be about two nches short

Wow, you are very good at explaining things clearly and in "layman" terms! I had a front door replaced several years ago, paid the guy and he wouldn't come back to finish the trim. So I have a nice front door without any trim on it. Do you have a video that would help me to do this myself? It's brick around the door but had trim around it before. Thanks! I just found your channel this evening on a lark and really enjoy it and you.

Great video... Great teacher.. .. .exactly what i want to see on these awesome youtube videos... tell me all the details and history, or any other good stuff, that you can in a healthy non argumentative way... the details matter huge huge.. and anyone seeking information will never complain about you giving too much... probably best not to make anything seem diabolical by calling it secret ... even if at some time tradesmen really did keep the information as a secret ... that said... a very lovely video with explanation of terms and purpose.. good work. Thank you for your investment in the future of the community.

Unfortunately there was some warping of our framing wall at one point. This has caused the drywall to be off from the casing of the prehung door. Instead of opening my angle, it's caused a front to back flex. What's your suggested means to handle this? Thank you. Your teaching style is so easy to understand and enjoyable to watch.

Great videos .! Could you do a video on backcuts and front cuts with plaster not being flushed with jam . Or casing sticking past plaster ?
@ef2b
@ef2b 6 лет назад
A carpenter once taught me to remove casing by prying it away from the sheathing and simply allowing the finish nails to either come with it or pull out the back. If the nail comes with it, pull it out through the back, not the front. The reason I'm saying this is that the "secret nail" in mitered corner makes it hard to get the trim off without destroying it. You can't pry away from the sheathing because the corner with the secret nail will break and you can't knock the trim up or out to loosen the secret nail because of the nails going into the wall. When I took down trim for repairs in a late-1800s house trimmed in oak, there weren't any secret nails. Actually, there weren't any miters. They ran the top of the casing straight across, ended it with a return, and then dropped the vertical casings down from that. Very classical. My question is, how do you take down trim that has the secret corner nail? I run into it a lot and usually end up breaking the casing a fair bit. Your videos are excellent. Thank you for posting them.

You read my mind I needed this video I'm doing three windows and I was so upset the contractor didn't finish them I am like I'll do it its just three windows on a back porch but I need the whole set up I have to shave down the drywall and plaster and do the wood I might opt out for the plastic since it's just for an open back porch nothing special but I want it finished. I have a request what can you use different to cover gas pipes? I want it to be accessible and paintable I was thinking sheet metal....

use glue on all mitres. Another trick is on a mitre cut, say a double 45, while setting your saw on a 45 mitre, bevel back 2 degrees. If your jamb or build out is out past your wall a little that 2 degrees keeps your mitre tight.
@s.harlee362
@s.harlee362 6 лет назад
We used a utility knife to remove material from the back portion of each miter cut. (effortless on standard pine molding). This allows the two 45 pieces to meet just at the outside (visible) portion of the mitre, making for a tighter fit than a but joint mitre. Another way we accomplish what you just described if you don't have a compound miter saw.
