A great sparring session between a taekwondoka and a Muay Thai practitioner. This is from what's becoming my favorite Muay Thai gym in China called Superman Muay Thai. The TKD practitioner has some great kicks to his arsenal, but he also makes beginner mistakes in his kickboxing. The Muay thai practitioner looks very conditioned, but he also isn't going to the body enough. But he'll learn. Let's watch and see the gap between TKD and Muay Thai. Leave your comments and let us know what lessons you learned!

still making fun of taekwondo are you, doesn't it ever get old, what you don't realize is that arts like karate and taekwondo, the way they are practiced now are not the way they were originally intended, things like karate blocks are not actually blocks and most of the movements and forms have been misinterpreted over the decades and what you see now is watered down and diluted.

Caught up with a high school friend after college and said how I'd trained some mma, mostly Muay Thai in college and he was a youth black belt TKD so we ended up sparring. Hobby Muay Thai and a little reach had me edge out in the spars and he ended up training MMA, BJJ, and Muay Thai after that. He got his blue belt in BJJ and won a few amateur bouts before an eye injury changed his hobby list. Great friend to this day.

In all fairness, the TKD guy has got heart. But he trained 3 years of TKD to fight in a non-TKD match, it's a recipe for a one-sided event. Coming from experience as an old-school TKD BB, you REALLY need to learn boxing to survive any of these matches.

Yeah, and it isn't even the martial art's fault, it's the way it's taught (which in this case, i don't consider part of the art itself) And to be honest, someone that gets really, really good at kicking can go on without any hand techniques, i have seen it before, both in person and online, but you need to train properly, if you always barely spar and only do it under the Taekwondo ruleset, you ain't getting anywhere

The TKD rules really affect their ability to fight in non-TKD matches. No punches to the face, so they're not used to having their guard up when punches are thrown. No low kicks (they don't know how to check a kick), No pushing or throwing. They can't clinch so they're not used to tying someone up and slowing their opponent down. No knees or elbows which benefit Muay Thai. Also kicks are worth more in TKD scoring so TKD fighters are conditioned to throw less punches. I do find it odd that they don't protect their heads more since there are more kicks to the head.
@tristantsang4325
@tristantsang4325 Год назад
Tkd loves keeping the hands down because of the way points are scored. The body is a much bigger target than the head and every kick to the body is worth at least two points and four if it’s a spinning kick. In a point sparring scenario protecting the bigger, less mobile target (torso) is far more important than protecting the smaller, harder to reach target (head)
@jcmoral1978

Kicks also score higher than punches in Muay Thai. Of course if the match ends in a knockout that's moot.

TKD guy did pretty much everything available to him but sadly they don't teach head movement in TKD. His aggression was great, he's fast and athletic, and he was pretty smart with his use of kicks. He didn't go for the usual fancy spinning stuff like a lot of TKD guys do. I feel a philly shell technique would have helped him here. Bill Superfoot Wallace is a great example of this. Anyone hoping to win with kicks should research him.

No yall both are wrong, as a taekwandoe practitioner we are taught to dodge its a common aspect of fighting. If you notice a lot of tkd fighters stay on they're toes and hop back a lot. This leaves a dodge and counterstrike available, and not too mention a lot of tkd involves parrying following restraint or disabling techniques like a shoulder dislocation or naturally thr non-sport version wed go right for yout throat after a parry or dodge. Joe rogan was an extreme lethal tkd fighter and there are so many more just like that or even more capable. Judging the whole sport by one singular amateur that im sure isn't even past his first 5 belts is very small minded. Theres tkd fighters that would take your head off without even needing to look at you. Most tkd fighters aren't 5'4 90 lbs Asian kids with no power, majority train they're legs, and could kick the jaw off yout face and land back in a stance faster then you could throw a jab.
@justinwallace269
@justinwallace269 Год назад
@EthanHunt-zy3oq Not completely untrue but a little delusional. I know exactly what you're talking about because I've done all that. I've knocked guys out and even broke a dudes arm with a tornado kick, but TKD's effectiveness is situational at best. TKD's grappling component is straight out of a women's self-defense class. No takedown defense. No answer to being engaged on the ground. No leg kicks or leg kick defense. Additionally, if you don't have a wide open space to fight in, most of your kicks, distance management, and evasions are neutralized. If you're dealing with a solidly build dude with some wrestling or boxing, he's gonna truck into you and then you're fucked. And what if you're fighting more than one person? While you're throwing a kick, one guy catches it while the other one rushes in while you're on kne foot and tackles you down. Then what?? Joe Rogan fully acknowledged that he was getting lit up by kickboxers who managed to get in the pocket with him. Punches are always faster in combos than kicks. Don't get me wrong, I love TKD and blasting people with kicks, but it's got its time and place and a lot of holes to fill. Life isn't a movie.

I was a tae kwon do practitioner before but I stopped practicing it when I realized my coach gave me a false confidence that I would do well in self defense situation. I had a street fight when I was in high school I was able to beat my opponent maybe because of his lack of discipline but when he suddenly pulled out a butterfly knife I froze in fear and I don't know what to do. Maybe I would have been stabbed on that fight if a security guard did not show and stopped everything. When I got older in my 20's when I remembered it I cringe because I was stupid in my younger years I should have thought of evading the fight instead.

I've trained in Taekwon-do since 1982. In the early days of Taekwon-do it was bare knuckle fighting and there was a lot more body conditioning. It's not the art but the way you train. In my opinion when the WTF modified taekwondo to create this olympic style it weakened the art. The ITF taekwon-do uses both hands and feet while sparring and has remained more traditional.

They don't even use their kicks properly and that's what they focus more on LMAO To elaborate: they barely use leg kicks, which are very importan. Most of them do not set up their kicks properly and do not use feints. They usually lack power and do no condition their shins or feet properly. They kick with the feet while barefoot!!! You are only supposed to do that when wearing shoes, and even then the shin kicks pack more power. They don't try to destabilize their opponents with their kicks, they only hit them. They barely do knees, i know that i'm talking about kicking, but the close range substitu of kicks is kneeing your opponent, they should train it more!

6 months in Muay Thai the primary focus is getting you ready for competitive kickboxing. 3 years in TKD just simply guarantees you are proficient in the basics. Most people dont even attain their black belt by 3 years. (Which means they are still training with the basics). Theres more to learn in TKD and other aspects that dont specifically pertain to competing in mma. This and the fact that within that time you compete with a vast array of other low levels kickboxers. But sadly most studios will only train on whats needed to make you a great TKD rule set competitor. Not to allow you to utilize your kicking in kickboxing

taekwondo is good they have a lot of things in their arsenal // sophisticated kicks But the problem is how they are trained. Muay thai is amazing and the real life pressure training complements the style. In the end taekwondo now is learned/practiced for points and belts not winning fights.

TKD guy was eating soft jabs to the face the entire fight but In reality one good hook on the chin would end the fight. Another problem is that TKD is useless when the opponent is close. MT guy kept going forward en TKD kept trying to keep distance

Training TKD is never a good use of your time, unless you are purely looking for a form of exercise and want to gain some flexibility. Nothing inherently wrong with the art, but the way that probably 90 percent of TKD schools train, as well as the ruleset, just make it a hardpass for actual martial application.

TKD guys are so used to kick opponents who keep their hands low, so when they face someone with hands up, their kicks are almost always ineffective.

Why does the tkd guy only throw side kicks? He had agressive opponent who tries to close the distance and do his stuff. He could maybe try to gain some distance by throwing some front kicks and keeping opponent at distance. I know it sounds easy in theory and MT guy is definitely superior but he never tried a basic front kick.

It is good to learn the sport, the competition format of any given system but you need the martial art otherwise the knowledge of set system is incomplete. This is far too common an issue across several disciplines. The TKD practitioner had the speed and coordination to get the best out of the engagement and yet lacked the basic skills of dealing with strikes at close range and protecting his head. These are skills that are embedded in their own forms but sport focused programs don’t teach. One can see the same issue in karate schools that don’t address the embedded grappling component of the art as well as BJJ schools that don’t train enough their takedowns and striking skills. While these are things that might not be part of all competition formats they are fundamental skills that are tied into the structural components of the system. It’s like opening a device and starting to rip out components from the circuit board. Sooner than later you take out something that will render the device useless or damage it.

TKD used to be such a cool and practical fighting style. The Olympics gutted it and now its barely a fraction of its former self. Did you know that traditional TKD had a lot more hand work, knees, elbows, basic tosses, and submissions? Nowadays you only see bullshido tkd used for point sparring.

i would like to point it out that there are even matches where taekwondo wins against muay thai...of course the latter is quite better for ring fighting (competitive taekwondo is more point based)....it's the fighter not the art..the muay thai guy was a better fighter... simply put..... nowadays ure better suit with the usual MMA mumbo jumbo when ur fighting in the ring ofc...but in a street fight situation everything can make u win...a well placed kick in the face by the taekwondo guy could end that guy life in a real fight...heres some example of taekwondo winning but, again, real life is a whole different matter, compared to ring fighting: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DEbOrclThOQ.html

I'm not saying this to defend TKD but WTF is the worst representation of TKD. ITF guys usually also have horrible boxing, but it is the real teakwon-do and you would be amazed what some ITF dudes with good hands can do.
