These are still Who_Tee's best videos! Once again the 308 Winchester turns out to be the least glamorous cartridge with no outright wins (other than availability on store shelves), but... it's the best compromise for expansion, penetration and recoil. It's the plain Jane, girl next-door that's the perfect wife. 😄
Thanks for the video. My only comment is in five years since this was shot ammo technology has improved I would think but still glad to see the 30-30 win the jug test.
Velocity doesn’t always mean penetration. The 3030 is slow but it penetrates deep. Water jugs are hard on bullets. All these caliber are great . So it’s just personal preference.
Hi hoo tee,I would like to see a video on the 22lr AR conversion device from CMMG to see if they are worthwhile to buy as far as accuracy and reliability. I think you would do that video justice thanks
I love my dirty 30. It's always in 150 hollow points when I can find them. I'm sending this to that shot talking person who's swears by their high dollar guns and rounds.
30 06 is agreat round their isnt a animal that it cant take down Im nos saying the other rounds are not as good I'll take a yone of them but we have are favorites
It's not surprising the 30-30 went further. The hydraulic forces working against the bullet were less. While the force against the .300 Win Mag was enormous. That's why there was a more violent shock. Fluid cannot be compressed, so it has to move in the direction of least resistance. In this case....out and up.
What a great video!! Love the 300 Win Mag comment - "We had 7 jugs now we got 4". You should have added "we had a table too, but most of that got trashed"...the energy transfer was huge!! Great video, I watch them here all the way down under in Australia! Keep up the great work.
My theory as to why the 30-30 won is this. The 30-30 has the least velocity, but with that lower velocity came less bullet deformation, which created less resistance in the water and allowed it to hold its velocity longer. The .308, 30-06, and .300 all had much higher velocities, and more deformation, which created more resistance in the water and caused them to lose their velocity faster and stop them quicker. But I also really don't know what I'm talking about and could be completely wrong
My initial prediction before watching them perform was that the 300 , 30-06 , and 308 were more aerodynamic so I thought they should have gone through more jugs , respectively to eaches power . So my initial prediction was that the 30-30 was going to expand more and penetrate the least , due to being less aerodynamic , while the 300 was going to penetrate the most due to having the most power . Maybe we need an metalurgist to examine the composition of the bullets .
Thanks Who Tee Who for this old time water jug test. Love .30 cal. Grew up using my Dad's model 94 in .30-.30. Then the first rifle that I bought was the model 70 in .300 win mag. I had a .30-06 for a short time, but I sold it. I have yet to purchase a .308, but I have been looking. Thanks for the fun video.
Cup and core bullets don’t like really high velocity, they tend to blow apart. They work great out of a 30/30 as they retain weight at the lower speeds and penetrate deep with reliable expansion. If you’re looking for penetration at higher speeds you need bonded bullets, or copper bullets… that being said cup and core bullets out of a .30-06 or .308 are great for light skinned game like deer. A .30-06 or .308 with cheap core lokts will put a deer down where it stands!
Mythbusters already did this. They wanted to see how deep under the water you'd have to be to survive being shot at. They used 9mm, muzzle loader and 12 gage slugs as the "slower" rounds and 223, 30-06 and a 50 cal as the "fast" rounds. They put a block of ballistics gel under water at different depths. Long story short, the slower rounds will kill you at a deeper depth than the high velocity rounds will...even the 50! Hell, the 30-06 even beat the 50 cal! It's bullet was the only high velocity round to actually pen the gel at 1- 2 foot depth. Only made it about an inch in though!
Great vintage video, 300win, the most fps and most energy, dumps all the energy and expands rapidly there for reducing it's ability to over penetrat, which is a good thing in some cases. Can't wait for some of those CZ bullot slinger videos to post. Keep them coming and GOD BLESS. 👍👍✌️🇺🇲✌️
as expected but thanks for confirming, all great rounds but 300 win magnum is going to be the monster always, hits like a train, .308 is the do all, 30-06 for more penetration , 3030 is just fun and great deer medicine.
Try this wit bullets that do not expand, if you want penetration, think the results will be quite different. The 30 30 went through more because it expanded the least.
The ol 30/30 has probably taken more game in North America then the rest. it's just a cool gun. 06 and 308 are goodins too!! thanks for bringing this back out!
No surprise to me , 30-30 expanded the least so it penetrated the most. I once shot a 30-30 through the length of a deer at 155 yards , the deer was faced straight at me. The bullet entered the base of the neck , went the whole length of the body & I found it just under the skin in the back of one of the hams.
I was thinking the 3030 to, but I may have seen this. I always like the content here and leave a like. It often helps me remember whether I've watched or not. I hadn't liked this one so maybe I didn't see it yet.
The 300WM would probably act like the 3030 if its target was 365 yards away, which is where its velocity gets down to the 30-30's muzzle velocity! That high velocity works on the bullet harder. "For every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction." These tests are cool, but "performance" is a relative term. If you had a hydraulic pressure gauge on each jug, the 300WM would have pushed each needle farther than the others. Shooting the 30-30 at 365, would let you have a snack while waiting for the bullet to hit.😂
Great video and very surprising. You should do another video with other hunting rounds like the 45-70, 7mm rem mag 243 270 and ect. And put them up againt the winner of this video until you come out with a winner of the most jugs penetrated. Thx
It would be terrific to see this test done with some armor piercing or FMJ. That would be a better indicator of penetration. I was able to blow through several sections of an engine block with some ammunition I once had for my Mosin Nagant. Milk jugs are fun to watch and I wonder if the 300 Winchester Magnum would get through the 12 of them.
I was surprised at the results. Did most jugs. I did not think the 30-30 would penetrate7 jugs. My fav is the 308, I have several 308's, no 30-30 or 30-06. Sold my 300 win mag many years ago.
The reason the most powerful rifle didn't go through more water jugs is due to the high velocity of the bullet striking the water which doesn't compress. The faster you hit the water the more resistance it provides which explains why the 300 Win Mag bullet expanded the most and blew the jugs apart more so than the other rounds. The 30-30 is the slower bullet by far which allowed it to penetrate further because it didn't dump all the muzzle energy as quickly as the other rounds. Surface tension of water is reason for this. Anyone who water skis should understand this, if the boat pulling you doesn't have enough speed to pull you on the skis you will sink but once you have sufficient speed your skis will ride on top of the water, if you go fast enough you don't even need skis you can go barefoot. However if you wipe out going fast you will soon find out just how hard water is when you hit it with your face!
HARD to believe the 30 30 went through that many jug s good test all these bullets are capable 300 mag x long range 30 06 and 308 in the middle and 30 30 closer distances ,would have been interesting to se the 30 30 in 160 leverevolution those bullets mushroom well may be another test . I like 308 don t have one but my go to gun is a Winchester 94 big bore in 307 which is like a 308 with a flat nose i figured the 308 would do well against the 30 06 . a good test would be all the leverevolution ammo in all the different calibers but it would be hard to get all the guns for it good job
Ammo cost and availability is important. The question is how many deer and other game taken in your hunting condition or if for self defense which of the rifles so chambered is best for your purpose. I do not care how many milk jugs since they all will kill.
Well, I would have guessed the 300 would have gone threw more, but I guess it would be better for the round to stay inside of an animal. That way, all of the energy is transferred to the animal. If the bullet passes straight threw most of the energy isn't felt by the animal. I guess the difference between being hit by a nail or hit by a sledgehammer. Sure, the nail will hurt, but the sledgehammer will knock you down.
