45-70 Government is my favorite. This test reminds me of when I was stationed in Texas and let one of the guys in my unit shoot mine at a watermelon while prone. It was too funny. He basically exploded it and looked back at me and asked "did I hit it?" as chunks which had been flung upwards finally began to hit the ground. Ah, good times.

I brought my Winchester 94 in 1968 at Subic Bay Naval Base PX Store. As I recall the price was only $189. Our ship went there frequently for repairs during the Vietnam War, and since this was my last tour of duty it would be my last chance to acquire such a fine weapon at that low price. It served me well for many years after returning to civilian life. I've always loved guns associated with the old west.

I’m partial to the 32 Spec. I hunt whitetails in PA, where 100 yards is a long shot (dense hardwood forest makes it tough to see any further than that). Started hunting at 12. First year was with a borrowed 35 Remington. For my second year, Dad bought me a used pre-64 model 94 in 32 Spec. I’ve since moved on to a bolt action but I still have my 32 and it will probably get buried with me. I’m 65 now so a few deer seasons have come and gone. Good video. 😎👍🇱🇷

@joeromanak8797
@joeromanak8797 3 года назад
@@russellkeeling9712 - I’ve never hunted elk but I thought those were usually taken at much longer ranges. I have no doubt that the .32 could do the job at 150 yards but the bullet drop is pretty significant beyond that. What was his average distance? When we hunt whitetails, the ideal shot should be directly behind the front shoulder and about centered between backbone and belly. Dad taught us to be careful about shot placement because he hated to see them suffer or prolong their misery while you tracked them for an hour or two.

Who tee who. Hey I was thinking of a test last night that I think might be neat since I've not seen it done anywhere. How about sandwiching a cast iron skillet between 2 clay blocks? It would be like 3 tests in 1. It would show energy at impact, then the skillet would simulate hitting a solid heavy bone, then as the bullet goes into the 2nd clay block it would test penetration or remaining energy to further penetrate. Also, the pieces of bullet and skillet would become secondary projectiles and do further damage.🤔🧐

I had a friend who was one of the most successful elk hunters I have ever known. He hunted most of his life with a .32 Special. The key is to know the firearm you hunt with and have confidence in yourself. It always amuses me how the 45/70 has returned and everyone thinks of it as some super powerful cartridge. I remember when it ceased to be produced and the .444 came into popularity. We always called the 45/70 a pumpkin thrower, there are so many more powerful cartridges out there.
@shumway2323
@shumway2323 9 месяцев назад
Like what? Down range ballistics are so much better for the 45/70 than the 444. A cartridge that has been around as long as the 45/70 and still competing and kicking ass has a lot to say about it. Not to mention the versatility of it. I can load it with smokeless or black powder. there's not many other popular cartridges you can say about that.

@@shumway2323 I can load every firearm I own with black powder and I make my own. You are not well educated if you don't believe there are many more powerful cartridges than the 45-70. @doghousedon1

My experience with the LeveRevolution round is it's an exciting round that brings a lot to the table. But the bullet is cup and core, not bonded, and subject to bullet breakup which shitcans penetration. I suspect performance on clay to be disappointing, the bullet disintegrating like a varmint bullet. It's not a bullet I'd use on bigger game because of that. It has it's plusses and minuses, something each individual should look in to before choosing it. I'd love to see Hornady bond those bullets. They make an all copper version too but I'm still unable to find those for testing.

There are 4 distinct generations of Winchester Model 94. 1. Pre-64 guns with all milled parts and reciever 2. Post 64s all with recievers made of powder forged steel and stamped sheet metal cartridge lifter with a cheaper finish. The hammers on all post 64 guns have horizontal cuts instead of checkering for grip. 3. The 1970s model 94s went back to a milled cartridge lifter after complaints of broken and bent lifters. They also slightly improved the bluing and wood finish. 4. 1980s+ guns with nearly the same quality as 1970s guns, but with a cut on the reciever and different ejector to facilitate angled ejection for scope mounting.

@AKYukon ....oh yeah, it would be interesting to see if it blows apart as dramatically. Definitely should stand farther back, getting hit with frozen clay schrapnel would not be fun. Hmm, that's a thought,...would the heat generated by the energy transfer at impact be enough to cause a noticeable thaw of the frozen clay. In other words, damage from near instantaneous melting versus damage purely from kinetic impact. Great, 0434 and I haven't gotten to bed yet & now I created something to ponder. Sheesh. Thanks alot AKYukon. LOL
@akyukon
@akyukon 3 года назад
@@pauld6967 Ya know, you have a point. I think the thawing would be dependent on the speed and shape of the projectile. If it was flat, it would transfer the energy faster and wider on impact, if it was fast enough. If it was pointed, it would transfer energy, but in a narrower channel? Hmmm Ultimately I think thawing would be on a very small, rapid scale, close to the projectile.
@pauld6967
@pauld6967 3 года назад
@@akyukon There is always a tradeoff. 🙂 Presuming that velocities are equal, a pointed projectile focuses the kinetic energy thus having a greater shattering effect and greater passthrough than a blunt/flat-nosed round. However, it won't expand as much (although tumbling may compensate) in terms of wound channel and it won't "dump" it's kinetic energy into the entire object. So less chance of knockback/knockdown. In my opinion. 🙂

If you are actually hunting large game the 45-70 does a lot less meat destruction than most magnum rifles. My 6mm Remington does more damage to meat than the 45-70. If you double the weight of the bullet you double the foot pounds of energy but if you double the velocity of the bullet you quadruple the foot pounds of energy. The 45-70 and like rifles use the bullet mass to achieve deep penetration creating a long wound channel. I have a CVA Scout 2 in .444 Marlin and in 2019 I harvested my elk with a 266 yard shot. I was shooting from above the animal and the bullet struck between the shoulder blades and passed to the ground below. I was able to eat the meat right up to the wound channel.

I know the light 300 grain JHP 45/70 magnum loads will make quite a mess, they’re cooking at 2350 FPS though, which for a 45/70, is really fast. About 1000 FPS faster then the standard Remington Core Lokt 405 grain rounds. I always shot the 405 grain buffalo bore standard pressure full power rounds here in the northeast . 1650ish FPS, 2400 ft lbs of energy. Excellent close range deer slayer

perfect demo of why i like the 30-30 in the US for hunting or home defense... it dumped its energy within that block, the 32 over penetrated, and 45-70 was just overkill

@@terraversalvoid5391 I've dropped hogs with in 10-15 feet .. the short profile of the 30-30 actually makes it a nice quick aim or hip fire choice for close quarters in a pinch . Not to mention the added bonus of the knuckle guards if it ever came down to wacking someone with it lol.. But oddly enough I found the 17 HMR revolver is a perfect partner with a 30-30.. classic look and with the right rounds ... the 17hmr can do an amazing amount of dmg with in just a few inches with no worry of over penitration .

I love my old 1894 Winchester in .30-30, hard to beat on a spot and stalk in the thick brush. I love the brute power of the .45-70 but my old shoulder wouldn't like it so much. But, I think it would be neat or maybe a little nostalgic if Winchester would come out with a .32 cal., the 320 Legend.
