Couple notes 1. Water could penetrate my hair with heavy oil and butter on it but water could not ADEQUATELY penetrate my hair to keep my hair flexible and hydrated to have it's best integrity. 2. My hair LIKES and benefits not tolerates a product with oil or butter well formulated into it. If the oil and butter in the product makes sense for the formulation and how I'm caring for my hair the conditioning or lubricating or coating property of the oil or butter is highly beneficial. I had PTSD 😂 from my previous oil and butter use so I was a bit extreme with my language in this vid. 3. My hair has a very low tolerance in terms of buildup. I can literally maintain the health of my hair with a quality moisturizing shampoo, conditioner, and water soluble leave in conditioner. My hair dislike heavy anything (oil, butter, gel, protein, glycerin, you name it). This contributes to why no raw oil or butter or no heavy oil and butter product use works for me.

I never understood how someone could call not using oils and butters anti black. Like you said, it literally can be detrimental to some people’s hair, so why tell the person to still use it? My hair was never hard with oils but the one time I used Shea butter was the only time I experienced the “hard” hair. Then I learned that even though they weren’t making my hair hard, the oils I stuck to were still blocking water from my hair. Now after stopping i learned what my hair is actually supposed to be like and I’m thankful for coming across your channel when I first quit heavy products and stopped doing mid week refreshing and retwisting. Keep doing you. Clearly all those big chops in 2020 have and are still paying off in your hair 1000x.

i love how you brought up the point that you still shampooed and that didnt help. because people are so defensive of using the oils and butters and poor quality products and say oh well ill just shampoo it out. but that always isnt the savior when you're using things that do more harm than good. great video :)

THANK YOU for this video. Many people do not understand that this is a process and it'll take time. I stopped using butters and heavy products in 2018. I was still using about a tsp of oil on wash days as a "sealant." I remember trying to oil my scalp when I had braids because that's what I thought I was supposed to do and chile, my scalp was ITCHY and INFLAMED. I stuck to use aloe gel only on my scalp but now I know to just shampoo and condition. I didn't learn about Black Girl Curls until early March but through learning about what my own hair did and didn't like through trial and error this past decade, it was much easier for me to listen to what they're saying. I hope other people listen too and quit calling it a trend. It's a way out of the mindset that Black natural hair is unmanageable or difficult

My hair hates oils & butters too! So happy that I started out my natural hair journey with my big chop done by a curly hair expert - I’m lucky to be in the D.C. area, so I have choices. So I never had to use the trial & error approach. I had a customized approach to my dense, but super thin/fine “type 4” strands. My hair continues to thrive because I give it what it loves - water, water & more water. I’m a wash & go only sister, and my hair loves being done twice a week. That water is key to my routine. And keep in mind, I’m a bleached blonde (done by a colorist), and plan to stay a blonde for the rest of my life. (Gen Xer here, so I’m fighting some grays for sure. Blends much better as it grows in, with the blonde.)

Sis!!! You are preaching to the choir!! I was going through the same thing with hair products and my hair was crispy too. I could never keep moisture in my hair. Even after a deep conditioning!! I suffered major shedding and my hair stayed tangled. I stayed away from wash and go’s I did two strand twists. I did start the 30 day detox by using uncle funny’s daughter curl magic and now the Innersence product line to include I create hold. I now do wash and go’s and my hair is beautiful!! I could not get this curl definition and hold even when I did a two strand twist!! No more shredding, tangles, and dryness!! I spent years using layers of butters, creams, smoothies, gels, oils and leave-ins to achieve wash and gos and twistouts only to end up with flakes and build-up despite shampooing and conditioning weekly. I could never figure out why. It was hard letting go of my oils and butters but, I think my hair was trying to tell me: "I'm not made for this, Sis". 😆 2 weeks into the detox, I'm seeing a huge difference! With current science as it relates to Black hair care, the kinkier the hair, the more it loves water. Just because something has been done for thousands of years doesn’t make it correct, or even beneficial. Cosmetology has burned natural hair in the past, but it is evolving, and we need to move with that evolution. Our hair loves water, and the sooner people can let go of the idea that we HAVE to use oils and butters, the sooner we’ll all have our best hair.

I'm on week 3 of detoxing and it's been eye opening. I've too have been natural for over a decade, but didn't know what my hair and scalp felt like without buildup on it. After detoxing for two weeks I tried to go back to one of my favorite deep conditioners and was stunned to realize how much build up it left on my scalp the next day (even though I'd thoroughly rinsed it off).

You're the first and only youtuber I've heard say they've had an adverse reaction to henna. I thought it was just me. I lost more hair than I grew using those ingredients and my scalp stayed agitated. I'm about 30 days in using the CCS method. My hair is so much better. Softer, more elongated, more hydrated and much easier to detangle. And my hair is growing so fast! Your progress is amazing and I can't wait to get to where you are. Keep these awesome videos coming! When it comes to many styling products I would and still put a lot of water when applying. I actually put my head under the shower and apply those products whenever I use it. I apply it and just about rinse it out. I learned early that those products just sit on my hair and make it dry. This is before I heard of no oil and no butter. But now that I have learned of this method, it made my hair regimen much better and I understand a little more of how to address a better way of treating my hair. One big mistake that I was doing was using two different conditioners. I even tried conditioning first before shampooing and following with a rinse out conditioner. Now I understand why I was having trouble with those conditioners. At that time I thought doing deep conditioning and following with another conditioner was making my hair to shed so I eventually stopped doing it twice. Now I understand why it was a problem. You live and learn.

Hey Fo! Thank you so much for sharing ☺️ I am nearing the end of my 30 day hair detox and I definitely also feel blessed to have learned so much from BGC. My biggest adjustment was getting over what “moisturized” hair feels like and re-learning that the “touch of dryness” of my hair, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s dehydrated, it’s just set. I am considering re-introducing a leave in again, but want to start light (maybe a spray leave in). Which set style do you typically add a leave in to - twist outs? I fear that adding a leave in under UFD & I create hold may interfere with the performance - but I guess I’ll never know until I try!

Ok. I understand more that detox. I don't use shampoo and mask. I wash my hair with clay, oils or plants. I stopped using powders for mask, I make "tea" rinses (spicies, plants in powder) and I add a table spoon of honey (humectant). Then I mix oils, shea butter and glycerin. It's like a cream and I can make it thick or light.

I have adopted the same regimen. A few years ago we had a drought and water restrictions. Most people then planted all types of aloe. I discovered soap aloe which nobody remembers planting. That's what I wash my hair with or with hibiscus flowers and leaves shampoo. I use oat gel with honey to condition. And use fresh aloe Vera gel to style and I still use a bit of oil on top. I think the trick is to find the minimum your hair needs to thrive.

Interesting the effect henna had on your natural hair. I have used it 3 or 4 times on my natural hair and I don’t recall any adverse reaction, can’t say good or bad (I used the one from lush and another from an organic store). I will say that it was awesome for my hair when I was relaxed. I would regularly use it and my hair became thick, strong and shiny. 🤔

Yes, I use an organic Henna. I had a bad experience with one brand that they were adding stuff to. I searched out an organic company selling pure henna and tested it out. I found out my hair really likes it as long as I moisturize after washing it out. I’m also protein sensitive. So yea, each person’s individual hair is really different and requires it’s own routine. It’s never one size fits all with Afro hair lol.

I would wear a swim cap made for black hair to protect my hair from chlorine or salt and if I needed to redo my wash n go I would cleanse with an appropriate cleanser which may be a shampoo for chlorine or a cleansing conditioner with cleansing agents, condition if necessary, slap a water soluble botanical gel in, and air dry. I would make sure to re set my hair every 2 days if wearing an air dried set because they tend to tangle in comparison to a set done with a dryer, by simply running water through and finger detangling, adding my water soluble botanical gel, and air drying again until I get home and can do my normal routine with my dryer again. Should take no more than 30 min for me.

@FoAdunni 3 года назад
I timed my wash day and realized my hair was taking way too long to detangle with the Obia. I switched to the Briogeo and I detangled my hair in a little over 10 minutes and was like 😮. I chose the Briogeo one on my own based on my knowledge of formulations. I used to use the Innersense Color Radiance conditioner per the instruction of my stylist but Innersense products are a little too natural and can trigger my asthma and allergies, so I used Obia for a while. I do think I lost more hair during detangling when I used the Obia conditioner in comparison to the Briogeo. But that could all be in my head because my stylist has validated the health of my hair. I make sure to highlight in my vids that my product usage are not suggestions because I know why I select things can be very particular to me.

I have no idea about women it works for but I can speak on two reference points, my mom and me. My mom has super tiny, smaller than mine, kinky curls that feel like silky cotton and she can use all sorts of things in her hair, including oil and her hair still feels like cashmere. My mom doesn't work to grow super long hair, she has a dope hair cut. In the context of her hair I can see how oil can "work." Oils don't make her hair hard or brittle and cause breakage and she's not trying to grow her hair out so if there is breakage it won't be evident. I gave my mom all my oily buttery hair products. Just about anything works on her baby soft hair.

She also only uses tubs of shea butter as far as her "moisturizer". On the other hand, I could never. Women put chalk full of chemicals in their hair and some will be fine. Those very same women however would probably reach even more amazing hair goals if they at least did the 30 day detox and got to know their hair without products that build up. Okay disclaimer: Using a leave in is unique to my hair and how I apply products, if your stylist recommends not using a leave in follow their instructions or speak to them about how you would like to use a leave in. Okay so your question, I use a leave in for many reasons, one of them being I don't apply my Curly Magic in the shower to soaking soaking wet hair. I apply it outside of the shower so my leave in prevents my hair from drying out more than I would like as I work the Curly Magic into each section. I apply CM outside of the shower because I noticed that my topper (The Doux Mousse Def) works better on my hair when it's damp and the CM wasn't applied to soaking wet hair. @ESTHER AWE I understand the ingredient that allows water and oil to mix together in products. I understand that water and oil do not mix. Water and oil act differently on the hair strand. Our hair or scalp produces sebum. Oil will not prevent moisture from the air or water to penetrate the hair strand. Bottom line if you wash your hair weekly and properly cleanse your scalp oil can be beneficial to your hair. My hair loves oil and thrives with oil. If oil totally prevented your hair to become hydrated it would never get wet when you wash your hair. Your hair would just stay dry. My hair is not dehydrated. Anyway there are so many more important problems in the world. No other race divides itself on the hair products we choose to use like we do. Natural hair community....I mean really?? Our lives won’t matter to anyone until we value each other. Hair is not controversial. I mean this woman in her videos is acting like she is performing a solemn ritual when it comes to what she chooses to use in her hair. The women from blackgirlcurls are hateful and mean and envious of the success of these natural hair influencers.
