First we want to say...your hair looks ahhhhhmazing! Thank you so much for having the integrity to cite your source!! Best wishes on your journey as you continue to learn and understand your hair.
I've been oil free for well over a month now. I've noticed the following: 1. Wash time is waaaaaay shorter now than ever before 2. My hair has visible shine and softness now, even between wash sessions 4. Detangling is a breeze now 5. A quality shampoo and conditioner make a world of a difference 6. Hydrated hair stretches better and holds a style better too 7. My scalp does not itch anymore It's one of those things where you just have to try to see if it's for you
YES, styles lasting longer is what I just noticed too!! So I recently did a braid out for the first time in about a month and it lasted WAAAAY longer 🙌🏽. I’m glad things have worked so well for you!
Priscilla Mwasongwe I know the recommendation. I was just trying to use up the leave in lol. I couldn’t identify an oil in the first 5 ingredients and I miss the emollients of a leave in.
Everything starts from within. Starting a healthy diet/lifestyle our bodies will produce the oils we need. Thats why we need plenty of water, eat good oils, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and fruits daily. We won’t need so many products. I cut down a lot on hair and skin care products just by changing my lifestyle.
Girl, I grew up on the 3 step process and my hair was lovely. I then got into RU-vid naturalists and I so regret it. The oils, leave ins and butter have done a number on my hair. The texture changed and breakage became my best friend. Went back to 3 process and loving it.
Oh wow! I’m glad you’ve gone back to something that has worked for you! Ya always gotta do a little extra digging and vet your info no matter who it comes from (even me lol) especially on here.
Jesus be a tutor! I washed my hair yesterday, and used a single aloe vera plant to rub on my hair as a prepoo, shampooed, deep conditioned, leave-in and conditioning serum. No jamaican black castor oil on the ends, no twisting butter and today,.....ooh chile! Its not only Easter Resurrection Sunday but my hair looked the best its EVER looked after a twist. I am definitely laying down all the peppermint, tea tree, rosemary, thousand island, ketchup, honey and olive oil! Thank you Jesus!
@@virginiawilliams648 you should follow black girl curls. You will find out why you don't need leave in conditioner and some of the extra steps you did. The more you know the better your results and experience will get.
i just found iamblackgirlcurls in december 2020. and i’ve been on the hair detox since the beginning of 2021 . i was using a lot of grease and butters and oils and doing protective styles and not washing my hair regularly and also not using quality products (i was a cantu girl 😗) so i was suffering from so much breakage and split ends and no styles ever looked nice on my hair . like NOTHING WAS WORKING . but ! i found them and i started using the products they recommended and the methods and now i am able to style my hair !!! i also went and got a hair cut because my hair was going through some things . and i’m finally now noticing that hair is really starting to change and become a lot softer and hydrated . i just styled my hair on monday and i’m excited to see how long my wash and go lasts now . but yes i no longer use oils and butters ! and i love using a good quality product because you really can just add water to your hair instead of more product . and not to mention i can wash condition style and dry my hair in under 2 hours !!! as opposed to the 4-5 hours i was spending previously
YESSSS!! My experience has been the similar! I know they SAY not to stick to the products on the list but I say why not 🤷🏽♀️😂. My hair is finally starting to thrive the way I knew it could!!
@@TheKhrissss ur not suppose to becuz that's not what ur hair needs everyone's hair is different only a cut it kinky stylist can recommend products for your hair. People say things for reasons
This is definitely something people with low porosity hair should be doing. Butters and Oils never ever worked for my hair. Matter of face, I bought some Camille Rose butters (butter gel, Almond Jai) none of that never worked. Total waste of money. What I ended up doing is using the Camille Rose Clarifying Shampoo, TGIN Honey Mask as a deep conditioner, and Curly Magic.....THATS IT. The reason why this is working is because I realized I can get my hair done using only ONE moisturizing product and nothing else.
I’m low porosity as well. I started my detox 3 years ago after getting my hair cut at the salon (of iamblackgirlcurls). My hairstyles transformed after that with more elongation, more natural shine. My texture is already highly defined in its natural state. Prior to the detox, I had previously been using a variety of product lines including kinky-curly and Camille rose (almond Jai). My most recent issue with the UFD is that it has a low ph and smooths down the cuticles of already low porosity hair. Rather than add hydration, I feel that it dries out and water proofs my hair overtime. It also pulls out my natural coil pattern and natural elasticity into undefined, dry frizz over time. This is after many great 4-7 day wash n go’s that I experienced using the product. The effects occurred over time and styles lasted for shorter amounts of time the more I used UFD gel. I’m curious to know what your long-term results will be with it? Now, I use a leave-in with alternative film forming humectants likes honey, panthenol or sodium pca to penetrate underneath UFD gel.
I initially used kinky curly knot today under the ufd but one of the ladies recommend the UFD alone for a wash n go also so I am going to give it a try 🤔. I hope it will continue to work long term for me!!
I agree- they should AT LEAST give it a try! But now see the Almond Jai twisting butter is hard for me to actually get rid of 😩. I have gotten rid of everything else but that. It’s sitting on my shelf in limbo 😂.
I think naturals will regret shunning oils and butters long term. I have very dense kinky type 4 hair that is thriving with a once a week shampoo/dc, and finger detangle routine. Oils and butters are a very large part of that. My hair is not dry and my curl pattern is quite consistent. I mostly do protective styles and never use direct heat(only a hot conditioning bonnet). Now I think many of us can stop being so heavy handed with oils and butters such as myself. I saw one of those girls who stopped and she ended up big chopping. Why did she do that if it was so great? We need those oils, they are complimentary.
I totally and completely understand and to each their own and do what works for you BUT I think this is really one of those things you can’t knock until you give it a try and follow everything as outlined completely. I also can’t help but wonder if the young lady who tried and big chopped did the same thing🤔
@@TheKhrissss You're right. I have decided that I will stop slathering SO much oil on tho. I am super guilty. I think some of us use oils/butters like a security blanket!
@@Notagain44 My trichologists banned me from using neat oils and butters. I can still use oils and butters in a leave-in conditioner or a deep conditioner. It's been over 2 years with no adverse effects but I do apply leave-in every day as recommended by my trichologists. so although oils and butters are not completely cut out, they are significantly reduced. I also do not use stylers as recommended by my trichologists.
I wouldn't call it shunning oils and butters. This is what it is - It's not using raw shea butter, raw coconut oil, raw castor oil, and not using products that contain those items in the first five ingredients. So oils and butters can still be used if you follow the above and just Cleanse, Condition, and Style with high quality plant based products.
This vid or the trend it'self is not to demonize oils and butters but to try something new. Most of us slather product on our hair and throw heavy oil and butter on top of our hair when we don't ALL need to. Many of the styles, creams, custers, moisturizers and leave ins already contain oils and butters. So it's not like they are comoletely out of the equation now. It's a cool experience to see how your hair reacts with less products and it's a good way of getting to know your hair again. I alternate between applying butter to my hair or just applying a moisturizer. But my hair stays moisturized longterm and I'm able to have it shrink up without too many knots. I'm type 4b btw.
I was completely done with the detox and loving my hair. I went to get a long needed trim and my stylist told me my hair was dry & recommend i start using a shea moisture cream. I listened to her for the fact that she's actually seen and felt my hair. I REGRET IT lol. I started my detox again today
I have definitely had the experience of going against my better judgement and listening to a stylist rather than going with what I know works for my hair 😩. The good thing is that you KNOW you’ll love your hair again after the detox!
I feel like everyone took what stylists on Twitter said and ran with it. Curlychemist who’s an actual chemist , breaks down why oils are beneficial to the hair and how to use them properly. I think a lot ppl don’t know the difference penetrating oils/sealing oils. Nor do I think ppl know how to properly cleanse their hair. I did the no oil thing too and only used olaplex because that’s what I heard online and 6 months down the line my hair broke off . So I returned to heavier products formulated with oils , but still no actually pure oil and so far no breakage but I did have a lot of spilt ends , my stylist in real life actually told me to return to using oils as a way to protect my ends. I think if you cleanse your hair weekly properly oils shouldn’t be a issue …and I do believe they reduce friction and protect the hair strains esp during the winter. I’m keep on with oils .
Yeah you definitely have to take haircare info online with a grain of salt! I agree with you about people not knowing how to properly cleanse their hair which I think is a huge part of the problem because think about how many of us were anti shampoo and co-washing only for a while 😩. Thank by goodness we know better and can do better now lol. It’s all about balance and consistency!
Truth is everyone find what works for you and do what works for you. Oils and butters have HELPED alot of persons. And why some people may feel it doesn't work for them. It's not a one size fit all afterall. So do what works for you.
Well said. I totally agree. Use the methods that works best for your hair. All these various hair challenges are confusing me. One day, I read no oils, butters, or creams. The next day, no gel.
Thank you Khristian Simone for sharing your detox experience! This is one of the better videos on this method. Your hair looks healthy and NATURAL! In all honesty, the years of tons-of-products being recommended to get results was so over the top, pricey and unsustainable. Not to mention the long hours spent fussing with products defeating the whole purpose of a so-called wash-and-"go"! When I heard you say this method took you all of 37 minutes for your entire wash routine, I applauded--literally!
Your hair looks beautiful! I love oils but I have fine hair.I didn't realize until 2 years ago how they were drying my hair. I went to hairstylist seminar on natural hair and make us realize we didn't need raw oils. A while after I discovered the blackgirlscurls. They reaffirmed what the stylist said. I did once or twice some to prepoo. I even challenged my self since fall I decided that I would do wash n go even if was winter ( I leave in Canada). It work for me. I wash my hair every 6 days. No protective styles since March 2020.I feel my hair is healthier and my wash session are quicker.
The process of growing my hair out made me realize how low maintenance it really is. Water is my main moisturizer, I know some people say it dries their hair out but it brings mine to life. If I’m feeling fancy I might slab on some cream moisturizer, but never oils or butters. They always feel so heavy and gross. I’ll put oil on my hands to take down braids/twists but that’s pretty much it!
I’ve learned with oils and butters it’s an extreme game of hit or miss. I’ve had some oils make my scalp so itchy, make my hair feel extremely dry and even fall out and some butters just feel like a extra layer of glue on my hair right now I’m rocking with a mix of argan, jojoba, sweet almond and grapeseed oil and it’s been doing my hair wonders along with cupuacu butter which is really light on my hair
I find that non comedogenic oils are what works best for me but of course as she says everybody is different and what may work for some may not work for others
I dropped butters and cremes when I started my locs. I gave up oils a few months ago and my hair has never been healthier. I can’t wait to see how your loose natural hair responds.
What made you decide to drop butters and cremes at the start of your loc journey? I ask because I know a lot of times people use pomades and butters to retwist them 🤔. I’ve definitely noticed a difference in my hair health!
@@TheKhrissss With locs, bot everything you put on your hair can be washed out; they’re like sponges. And if you’re Black, your hair will loc without any product. But of course, telling people to just shampoo their hair, let it dry, and go, is bad for business. But I’ve seen the dreadlock of someone who uses conditioners and butters cut in half and the center was filled with product buildup. That was all I needed. The healthiest, lightest dreadlocks I’ve ever seen were always product and oil-free.
@@RestorativeClarity not gonna lie, I’d be curious to see a loc like that with the product build up 😩. May I ask why you waited until later to give up the oils? 👀
@@TheKhrissss I was convinced that Black hair is “naturally” dry and needed oils to seal moisture. But the oil was making my hair dirty and attracting lint. I took so long to stop because I was simply too stubborn to experimenting with not using them. The curly nugrowth channel has a dreadlock dissection video.
I loved how respectful you are ❤️, i gave it a try for one week, my hair for 3 days maybe was soft and beautiful type of softness but at the end of the week my hair was jjjjrrryyyy like it never been this dry with oil so i stoped it i'm back to oils . Nice experience though
Thanks and thanks for watching! I know it may have felt that way after three days BUT perhaps consider giving it some more time, especially if you clarified your hair to start with and are using the proper leave ins- I’m telling ya!
That’s why it’s a 30 day challenge, your hair will have withdrawals for weeks cause it’s been suffocated with oils but after a while your hair will feel great again
They also teach that if your hair is dry, then to rehydrate by cleansing, conditioning, and restyling. I agree with the others, give your hair time to “detox “
trust me I went through the same thing, it takes patience! it’s called a detox for a reason! it’s like how drug addicts go through withdrawals and have to detox from the drugs, it’s the same concept here our hair is going through withdrawals from all the oils and butters and product. that’s why whenever your hair is really dry, it means it’s time to wash your hair not try to re-moisturize with even more product
Hello, this is a beautiful video😚. I also stopped using them since February, and I am never going back 😅. I tried it because I never felt like my hair was being moisturised ever, it always felt like it was just being coated with products and was always dry😞. I February, I got a tapered cut and decided to experiment with no oils and my hair started to fell more alive. At this point it’s winter in South Africa but I am still doing wash and goes every 4 to 7 days because I feel like my life has changed completely when it comes to how I see my hair. I am in love you can tell 😍🥰😘.
I stopped years ago, honestly I am relieved. I was not using oils, I would buy them and they would sit there, then I started using them again and felt like it was doing nothing for me so I stopped. I realized my hair was moisturized longer and defined more the less product I used. Even when my hair was really long. Also my hair was growing the most when I was not using much or doing much to it. I thought it was just me. So I did not tell a lot of people, to see there is a lot of people that have found out that the thing that worked for me works for them, makes me very happy. I haven't bought hair products in MONTHS except for shampoo and conditioner. My scalp does not get itchy much, my hair has grown a lot in a year (I went bald last year) and is thick and full. I WILL NEVER GO BACK
I love the definition of your curls and I find that my hair really likes water based spray moisturizers more than butter and I couldn’t figure out why but this makes a lot of sense thank you 😍👏🏾
Thank you! And yessss I don’t know how we never thought of this before! I always just assumed something was wrong with my hair because it didn’t seem to respond the same as it did for a lot of people 😩
I dont know about giving up oils completely but my hair does react better to a less is more approach. My hair doesn't like heavy butters or grease or oil. It can take a light oil though. I guess I will try this though.
This is all well and good but I really want to see someone who has grown their hair down to their back in an un-stretched state using their methods. Everyone who converts to their method does indeed get healthy hair that’s is easy to regularly wash and style but i want to see that length! I’ve tried the method but I found although I have type 4hair my hair is too much on the fine side to withstand always having it in a wash and go hairstyle and I get more single strand knots so I have gone back to using just 1 butter based product with water as it’s first ingredient. I use only 1 product to do large twists till I co wash in a couple of days. I found I am retaining length and less knots because my hair is smoothed out. Plus I’m not a huge fan of how I look with a wash and go style... it has to be stretched out at my root with a blow dryer and that’s entirely too much of an extra step and I can’t be bothered.
@Thehairdoula here on YT seems to be heavily influenced by the info that @iamblackgirlcurls has in the Wash Your Damn Hair pdf. She even has a whole one hour wash day series that seems to be directly from the pdf and she has a good amount of length. Also I think if you give the 30 day detox a try you might find that you actually do like your wash n go’s because of the changes you’ll see. 🤓
@@TheKhrissss hmmm I’m familiar with her! You have a point, she does have a good amount of length... and she seems to wear her hair out regularly! I’ll give the 30 day detox a go and see how my hair fares! I do like trying different methods and as I said my goal is long length. Thanks for taking the time to read and reply 🌺
@@britjj5126 Yes, but remember she admit that she grew it first by using oils, she has only recently started the no oils /butter thing. Something tells me this will be a mistake in the long term.
i wonder that too! i’ve never seen anyone on their (and other stylists) method that grows their hair super long. which is fine, it’s just that’s what i’m doing. i think of curlyproverbz and she loooves oils. naptural85, Maryam Hampton etc. and i’ve grown my hair to waist length, i use oils and butters. i’m still trying the detox but i know i have to keep my hair stretched too. i’ll probably use creams that have oils further down in the ingredient list and maybe no oils on the scalp. idk! i do agree and think there has to be something to using natural oils and things, i’m just like..we’re of the earth! lol. maybe it’s just that we shouldn’t use too many, like you said
@@arib3225 in their live the other day it was said that naptural85 is like a unicorn in terms of the oils and butters working for her hair. Maybe it’s the same for curlyproverbz and Maryam Hampton. Think about it, ourselves included, and people you actually know and the regular regular folks we see every day that have used or do use mostly oils and butters and creams and all that, do you see lots of super long hair? 🤔
Have you joined see some curls by black girl curls? Or partnered with a cut it kinky stylist? I only ask because you will see what products would be most beneficial to you and how you should use products? And if you are doing it right and following professional guidance you will find out "refreshing" won't be necessary and you will not be in a guessing game on what products to use (like not mixing kinky curly with UFD). I would suggest everyone go there instead of following anyone of RU-vid (unless it is another cut it kinky stylist) who can tell you how to do this the right way. It will make your life A LOT easier than trying to guess and figure it out on your own.
I haven’t joined see some curls or partnered with a cut it kinky stylist in particular. However, the stylist that does cut my hair knows how to cut my hair type and does so just the way that I like it though she may not be a cut it kinky stylist in particular. Aishia recommended to me using UFD Curly Magic alone rather than with Kinky Curly Knot Today so when I do a wash n go next time I am going to give that a try and not spritz to refresh or break the gel cast. I personally think RU-vid can be super helpful and is free.99 for those who don’t want to spend extra money (I’m not saying that I don’t see the benefit in investing in your hair care be that via a course or partnering with a stylist), or don’t have access to a cut it kinky specific stylist. RU-vid is actually what eventually led me to the salon I go to now which ultimately led to me taking much better care of my hair. As with anything, I personally always do additional digging and research before committing to following or trying anything whether that’s something I saw and heard on YT or even going to a stylist. I think people should do the same and I thought that most did but these discussions that I’m seeing lately make me realize that everyone perhaps is not lol.
Thank you for this video! And thank you for not cursing! ❤ I say the same thing when I reference the book. I'm on day 14 of the 30 Day Hair Detox! For the longest I thought that my hair just didn't have a lot volume. But guess what, it actually does!! 😁. Thanks Black Girl Curls!
I'm very happy that some women are really seeing results and getting benefits from this method. I personally don't use oils and butter a lot anyways, but I add them in my deep conditioner mix with hydrolyzed wheat protein and a conditioner base. Before my deep conditioner, I wash my hair with a sulfate shampoo, then a non-sulfate shampoo. After this, I put in my moisturizer and then seal with grease and twist my hair. I don't touch my hair for about a week or two then I repeat and rinse my routine. Before using grease and adding protein to my routine, my hair was a frizzy and dry mess that couldn't retain any moisture. But these two additions have been a saving grace for my high porosity hair. For this reason, the no oil/butter method will not be good for me as I don't really like to touch my hair too often. I have no need to remoisturize my hair constantly. TBH, everyone should do their own research and come to the conclusion that best suits their hair and lifestyle needs. Good luck to all.
I scrapped all them natural hair products and went back to hair grease and shea butter. My 4C hair is healthy and strong! All the stuff I was told to stay away from, helped my hair grow.
GIRRRL - I pray you're right.. those natural curls are sweet and exactly what I want, for my crown. I'm not a curly hair type but I'm going to give this a try. Thanks for sharing the truncated version of this experiment!
I’m thinking that this is a modified max hydration method. No clay,no deep condition. I’m going to be trying this detox. This made me happy because I was tired of my hair. I will definitely try it because I am definitely tired of wet hair all day. Just to let you know, you can stretch Knot Today by adding more water. Still works.
@@TheKhrissss Yes I’m so serious this time like I will not shave my head! But I’m 3 weeks in! I don’t think I’ll go back! I never really used many oils or butters on my hair. I jumped off that ship a long time ago once I realized I really didn’t need them personally. But I definitely see a difference. The curls are definitely poppin even more without product and my hair is way more moisturized. And having a smaller stash of products is nice too.
I'm on week 2 of the 30 day hair detox. My hair feels softer after deep conditioning and it holds more water when I leave the shower. My curls are very defined and I surprisingly have a lot of shine (dense, medium to coarse strands so I wasn't expecting any). One thing that's a bit disappointing, and I hope this will change later on, is that I still spend a lot of time detangling and styling my hair. I haven't been able to cut down time at all
What deep conditioner do you use? I am still looking for my staple 😩. Do you detangle with conditioner in the shower? I find that it’s a lot easier that way if I do it first and then when I rinse it out applying my leave in and gel is a breeze! Hopefully it will get easier as time goes on!
@@TheKhrissss I use Creco Pelo deep conditioner (very moisturizing, clean ingredients) and L'Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil Mask (the orange tub). Both contain a lot of flower and plant extracts and little to no oil. I bought a ton of heavy dc's right before starting this challenge, not knowing I wouldn't be able to use them lol. And I always detangle my hair underneath running water without conditioner (but before shampooing. I get more slip that way. If I detangle after I'll end up with extremely tangled, matted hair).
@@lynebessi4410 I've tried but my hair tangles and mattes up if I don't detangle before shampooing. I literally tried that two weeks ago and end up having to detangle for hours because of the knots that had formed during shampooing. Maybe I'll try again when my hair is more hydrated
This is so interesting and your hair is beautiful! I personally don't pay attention to whatever is "trending." Oils and butters are only meant to be a tool and it's possible to abuse them in a way that can actually damage your hair just like anything else. They can also be beneficial for some hair textures more than others. I've always just used them for styling and I'm a lazy natural so trust me when I say I have tried my hair without heavy styling products and I just don't like the way it looks. Yes, it's softer and bouncier, but I personally don't like the shrinkage with my hair texture and butters weigh my hair down in a way that I really enjoy. Also the purpose of butter/oil is to seal that moisture in so that you CAN go longer between washes (not that you should). My very coarse, 4c hair is nearly down to my waist after years of just washing, sealing, and leaving it alone. To each their own of course, but I definitely agree that properly cleansing and clarifying your hair is necessary!
Thank you! And I think what a lot of us were missing is the regular cleansing and conditioning part. If we do that I can see how perhaps even if you still use oils and butters you can see some benefit as long as you’re cleansing and conditioning properly.
I'm wondering if it has to do with porosity of the hair. I have low porosity. Butters just sit on my hair and don't get absorbed leaving a filmy look. So, cutting out butters made sense to me.
@@hometowngirlncurls5669 with high porosity hair, you may just want to stick to your oils to seal in your moisture. I have high porosity hair. Living without oils and butters would ruin my hair. I've tried it for 3 months and yes I regret. Well to each her own 🌹
the only thing I hate about no oils or butter is my hair look so dull.. its no longer shiny the way oils makes it. I have four leave in before the no oil and butter detox and I threw out two that dried up my hair. the other two have oils but at the bottom of the ingredients. I'm not a wash and go or twist out kind of girl as my hair is thinner at the front and I don't like the scanty look.. now I only apply a little leave in 3 days after washing my hair and that's it. my hair is moisturized, the curls are popping, wash day is a breeze and the most benefit of it all to me, I lose less hair after detangling which is a miracle considering my hair is bleached and do I mention no dandruff?! people see no oils or butter and came out with pitchforks ready to battle. the lesson here is that, if you're using oils or heavy cream and butter you're going to need sulfate shampoo to get rid off all that build up.. Co washing is a scam, wash ur damn hair and if you're oil free like me, you can even wash with water and go.
I can’t go without butters in my hair, My hair is greedy. I could put oil one day and the next day you wouldn’t be able to tell. It loves water and oil and butter prevents the water from drying out
I found that my hair got worse and worse and felt tacky and stiff with each wash. It also looked gross. I have a combo of 3 a to 3c hair. I spent so much money on natural hair products, co washes and gentle cleansers. I started washing my hair with my natural products last week and my hair felt so waxy, I took my son's store bought NaturVital hair shampoo with laureth sulfate and his conditioner. They have no silicones in and contains avo oil in very last ingedrients. I washed my hair twice and did I enjoy all that foam. After drying my hair I was blown away by how soft and moisturised my hair felt. No roughness whatsoever. No tacky heavy feeling and not still looking dirty. Now I sit with these basically full bottles of natural products, I paid so much money for. I'm sticking to the NaturVital for now. The thing is I never had issues with store bought products neither with silicones, but I fell for this hype. Never in my life has my hair felt so awful with silicones as it did with all those oils. The natural products I used was suppose to be protein and moisture balanced but it just gave me wet frizz in the end
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that! I really really recommend the Black Girl Curls PDF, they've actually just re-released it because they address a lot of the things mentioned and give a better idea of how to go about things if you ever want to try again. I do understand doing what works for you though!
Most butters suffocate my hair except Avocado Butter & Un-concentrated Oil is Horrible “for my hair😭 The only oil I can put in my hair is Oils like JBCO & Argon BUT that’s if it’s already premixed in the Product. Aloe Vera gel is Awesome...Also your hair moves nicely & looks Soft.
@@cfoster6804 hello, yes shampoo too but not often and when i started doing that (and eating healthier greener) my hair started growing longer and fuller. @@TheKhrissss hello there, yes sugar and it causes body odor, even hair odor if you know what I mean. I noticed that when I cut sugar, my hair was less stinky and I didnt have to wash as often. Awesome video. Your hair looks beautiful! I def made a confoozled face when I read the title but I am glad that I watched lol. I used to love me a shea butter year 1-3 of my loose hair journey. I then stuck with water, oil and a leave in. Now that I am locked up I use rose water and oil and diluted lemongrass leave in. My hair feels awesome. I was weary about having to leave conditioner behind (do not want build up) but it seems to be working just fine.
Thank you! For my clarifying shampoo right now I use Giovanni direct 50:50 balanced hydrating clarifying shampoo but that’s only once every few weeks or do. At the time of filming for my weekly Shampoo I was using Curl Junkie’s Curl assurance gentle cleansing shampoo. However since that ran out I’ve been using Uniqurl’s Aloe Mint 2 in 1 conditioning shampoo. (Nothing is wrong with the Curl Junkie but Uniqurl is more accessible for me). I use Curl Junkie’s Curl Assurance smoothing conditioner 🤓
I haven't used oils nor butters in my hair in... I think about 7-8 years? I'm never going back lol. The only hair products I buy are shampoo, conditioner & styling gels. My mom used to HATE buying all those masques & butters & all😅
I haven't used oils and butters in my hair for quite a while now. My hair is hydrated and no longer behaves like low porosity hair, which I thought it was for the longest. I've been learning from @hydrabarsalon
Khristian! Ive been oil free for about a year and ill never go back. Its actually trying out the hair and preventing moisture (water) from penetrating. Folks just have to realize that what just because its what we've been taught, doesnt mean its the truth or good for us. There is no oil or butter that will promote hair growth. Length retention, is what makes people believe hair is growing rapidly. No, hair grows but are you making sure you keep it? Less will always be more.
I actually mentioned her on IG and always credit her whenever I post anything about my hair cut but sure, I can include that here too. I go to Southern Curl Salon in Atlanta, GA and Christina is the person that cuts my hair there 🙂
Also I’d like to point out that I get where you are coming from but the reason I didn’t mention that in THIS particular video is because it wasn’t the main topic. However, I’m not one of those people who tries to act like they can’t remember any time you want to know where they got something lol. I’m always happy to share the info if anyone asks ☺️🤗
My hair honestly feels the softest it ever has. My understanding of the 30 day detox is that you are to avoid RAW oils and butters and products with raw oils and butters in the first 5 ingredients. The ladies of Black Girl Curls elaborate a little bit more on this on some of their social media platforms :)
Oils and butters do not moisturize your hair, only water can really do that, aloe Vera juice, liquid leave ins, water based products etc. Oils are considered sealants but once placed on the hair shaft any additional moisture can’t enter the hair shaft. Therefore, over time drying out the strands quicker causing you to have to refresh your hair sooner.
I want to try this however I don’t do wash and goes . I only keep my hair in a bun for work purposes and I have dry itchy scalp so how can I combat that ? Yes I want to try the no oil no butters
It’s possible that you may need to wash your scalp more frequently than you already do. But if this persists I would definitely check with a dermatologist. I think you could still keep your hair in a bun, you just would need to wash your hair on a regular basis
This was the best decision ever for me, nowadays I only use Shampoo, conditioner and styler that don't contain oils in the top 5 ingredients. I'll start applying gel soon and see how it goes.
@@andioop-6846 The conditioner is what moisturises her hair and the styler might add additional softness. For twist out/braid outs you can use wrap foam (e.g. nairobi wrap foam) or mousse (e.g. the doux mousse def). You can also use mousse for braids and twists with your natural hair. For wash and go's, gel is typically recommended on its own or with a light leave in. It's recommended to dry your hair with a lcl hooded dryer or a hair diffuser afterwards.
There’s no such thing as a licensed natural hair stylist. There’s no regulated training program for natural hair care. There’s no established curriculum for natural hair care. Natural hair care is not covered in any cosmetology curriculum. There are no questions about natural hair care on any written state licensing exam. There are no natural hair care techniques covered in the practical portion of any state licensing exam. There is not one licensed cosmetologist who can say they are more of an expert in natural hair care than any mom who cares for her children’s hair. There’s no standard to make such an assertion 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
Thanks so much for the clarification and pointing that out. Perhaps I used the wrong term but I’m glad that it seems like you and most other people still understood the point I was trying to make that the folks with credentials have a lot of different things to say. 😌
I’m low porosity but my hair loves oil and butters water doesn’t dry my hair out sometimes though but it might have something to do with how soft or how hard our water is because I noticed that when I’m in areas with hard water my hair feels dry but in places with soft water my hair feels so good with water maybe they put chlorine in the hard water lol because I noticed that hard water looks clear while soft water looks brownish a little bit and feels more moisturizing
I just found this on the internet That's because hard water contains a buildup of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. This produces a film on the hair, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate. As a result, the hair is left dry and prone to breakage. Leave these issues unresolved and it could even lead to hair loss.
@@TheKhrissss By removing the harmful ions in your water supply, soft water changes the dry texture of your hair, making it soft and shiny. Soft water will also save you money spent on shampoos and conditioners, as it binds better with hair products to create a thicker and richer lather. I also just found this
I’ve discovered TGIN hair cream daily moisturizer and already addicted so it’s a hard no for me right now lol plus I don’t even use oils in my hair anymore soooo 🤷🏽♀️
I wash my hair once a month. I'd use this no oil method if I knew that it would keep it okay for a month. And I never leave my hair untwisted or Untied. I just prefer knot to dzeal
I still use a leave in and butter on wash day, but during the week I only spritz water and some grapeseed oil on my hair and then style with gel. My hair has never looked shinier and is growing nicely. I used to use creams/butters everyday and my hair was hit and miss. Less is more!
Looking back, I totally agree. Ya know, maybe it’s one of those things where we are just so used to doing something because it’s what we’ve always done and have been told to do and so we never really question it. 🤔 Thank goodness we know better now!
@@megankice9187 well since you asked, no but I have relationship with Christ. Does that mean I’m perfect? No! But I try to be mindful about how I carry and represent myself because I know that for some your life is the only Bible they’ll ever read. Additionally, it’s just my personal preference 🙂
@@TheKhrissss I've gotten the same message. Someone DM'd me on Pinterest with the same "are you 5" comment regarding using language. I 100% agree, we are written epistles read of all men!
It SOUNDS LIKE you may need to wash your scalp more frequently perhaps or use a good clarifying shampoo. But you may also want to consult with a curly/kinky hair expert or a dermatologist maybe
Oils and butters don't work that well on my hair. I realized this in like 2019 and my hair has been doing much better since I stopped using products with too much oils and butters.
At least you were able to come to the conclusion on your own which is awesome! A lot of us just continued along even if our hair didn’t respond so well because we thought it was US 😩
Sorry cant do that. My hair will fall off. I have to have some kind of moisture in my hair. I wash my hair today it only took 10 mins so i dont know why some feel its to much. 4 big twist and im done for 2 weeks. But im gone moisturize two times in between.
ONCE AGAIN...Black women need to figure out what specific products/herbs/techniques/ingredients work them. Not everything works well for every head of hair.
All curl specialists are saying the same thing . No oils no butters , wash at least once a week the only thing they differ on is what stylers they like and recommend oils breed yeast in the scalp per my dermatologist please do not use that nonsense
Especially since black women don't like to wash with shampoo regularly the oils and butter go rancid in the hair. A pretty big stylist in Arizona told me this years ago and I should've listened to him then.😖
I wish I am black girl curls would stop hoarding important information and just teach people how to care for their hair instead of asking for a fee first. (If you can’t tell I’m broke) but I’m also serious. This should be basic information right?
I get where you are coming from but you also have to consider the time, energy, and hours of education and practice they put into things to get that information. They did a live yesterday and went into some more detail about their history and credentials and honestly after watching it makes complete perfect sense that they would charge so much for the info and for styling because you’re only paying once for the info and if you find a good curly stylist you’ll only need to go for maintenance so think of it that way. PLUS what you learn will really save you lots of time and money you just have to choose your priorities and make a lil investment.
They don’t hoard it. You just have to invest in gaining the knowledge of how to care for your hair. The amount of information and knowledge that you’ll get from See Some Curls is less than buying some of these product lines. And they are professionals not influencers who are just selling you anything they are getting paid to tell you. I just hate I didn’t find them earlier in my natural hair journey 😁 🤗
I think it’s overpriced for sure, especially considering that black hair has been such a big thing for the black community we’ve been trying to learn to do it for ages. Black hair is cause for so much scrutiny and stress it would be more helpful to provide the information for free but if not free than a more affordable cost. So many black women have so much shame and hatred regarding their hair, why not help them? Instead of gatekeeping information that should be widely available and accessible to all. Instead they turn it into a niche to profit off of black women that have already had the life sucked out of them due to the expensive “natural hair” product aisle in grocery stores, hours upon hours during wash day, money spent on weaves, braids, etc. It’s honestly sickening and I refuse to support such a gross over expense. I wouldn’t let them touch my head after seeing how they can charge upwards of 1,000’s of dollars on courses. Not to mention the stylists they train go on to charge $100-300 for a cut and style. White women get their hair blown out and cut for $25-50 but because I have black hair you expect me to pay you double and even triple to cut the same black hair that is on your head? It’s unreasonable. I’m not broke but it’s unethical for a lot of reasons!
@@asiatee7021 You’re paying only a small part of the thousands of dollars they have had to spend on the education and the years of experience they have. Just like you’d pay a lawyer or doctor for their knowledge and expertise, why would this be any different? We’d pay hundreds for weaves or long term protective styles and anything else, I think it’s all about what’s important to you. Black women should be able to charge for their worth and their skill just like anyone else. To your point about white women paying $25-40 for blow outs, there are plenty of black stylists that will do the same thing. There are also plenty of white women who do pay $100-$300 for curly cuts for their specific hair type, which is no different than how these ladies are charging the same amount for their skill, time and talent. I don’t think it’s unreasonable or unethical at all. I’m willing to pay for someone who knows exactly what they are doing for my specific hair type and needs rather than trying to save a few dollars and not getting exactly what I want and having to pay to have it corrected in the end later. Just like if you’re not a photographer you’re not see the value in playing $1,000+ for a camera when a $10 disposable one does the same thing but there’s a difference in quality. The price I paid for the pdf is just a drop in the bucket in comparison to how much I will save learning to do my hair myself and not having to buy every product under the sun. Also, I only go for a curly cut only 3-5 times a year, which even with the cost divided by 12 months in the year is actually really reasonable. I think it’s just all about perspective and what you value. 🤷🏽♀️
@@TheKhrissss no I see the value however that value is not equivalent to $1,000s of dollars. I’m not going to equate these women to doctors because they are not. Simple as that. No one is saying they aren’t offering a valuable service however what I am saying is that it is an overpriced service. Because it is. To your point about spending 100’s on weaves and braids, I disagree with that as well. I don’t know why we as black people want to tax our own people for doing the same hair that grows out of our heads. Why should doing black hair cost more than doing white hair? It shouldn’t but we’ve allowed ourselves to become victims to the black tax. Things cost more because black hair is unruly, takes more time etc etc. People go to legitimate cosmetology school and style hair for $100 but I’m expected to $300 for box braids because my hair takes longer to do? Who came up with that? I actually dabble in photography and I believe in charging what you’re owed and I can see the value of paying more for a photographer...but there is a limit to everything. At a certain point the only difference being seen is the price not the quality. I stand on what I said for them to be feeling so bad about black women having long wash days and being misinformed they sure don’t seem intent on making the information more accessible and thereby helping the black women they claim to care so much about and feel so bad about. This is why I do my own hair and research my own methods because black people are truly ridiculous at times.
I have a problem with looking at you all hair and it still look dry to me. We are black and our hair needs oils and moist. No one give a full details on this no oil no butter method. I don't want to have wet hair leaving out in the winter time. I am old school and the oils and butter works for me just wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo. To many rules for this natural hair. You all hair still look so dry I am not with this. We need oil on the scalp and ends. You all are still using alot of products and expensive. I am not sold with this.
