This is an excellent point! This week, I'm working on upcycling an old duvet cover to cloth napkins! The ones I made 14 years ago from a stash of ugly fabric I inherited are finally falling apart.

It's not difficult to keep the same dish towel for over 7 years. I have one that I was gifted before my daughter was born, she is 9 and a half years old. My mom has most of hers from over 11 years ago when they moved countries, the brand on the dish towels is still visible so I know where they were bought and so I know their minimum age.

it is not about the cotton towels being more sustainable during production, it is one cotton towel replacing mountains of paper towels during these 7 years. compare the production of 7 years of cotton towels

Also you safe money and probably have healthier meals. I couldn't even afford to eat out or order every lunch. Lunch in central Helsinki is at least 13€ in a restaurant, that would eat all my salary in no time...

There are thousands of things you can do, of cloth diapers isn’t one right now (or ever) don’t beat yourself up, raising a kind and eco conscious human being is a big task 💚💚💚

Are you able to source some of the toys from charity shops if you have them near you, same for some clothes, understand for a newborn may not be possible but when the little one is older would be good particularly for rough and tumble play clothes.

A lot of my apartment is furnished with curb-side rescue items. I can't understand why people continue to buy IKEA kitchens. I've now bought 2 apartments that have IKEA kitchens but the surface doesn't hold up. It's absolute garbage!

​@@chicboutique9186the IKEA kitchen cupboards have a 20 or 25 year guarantee. I put in 2 of their kitchen cupboards in my laundry room, so far they are in excellent condition. But some people are just really rough with their possessions, it's not always poor quality, but just relentless abuse that damage items. When my parents got married they bought a new stove, one of my aunts bought the exact same one at the same time, my parents stove lasted decades, the other about 5 years.

I wish my local thrift stores had craft stuff like this (and I just wish they were better in general)!!! I crochet also and that just sounds like a dream, so cool! Good luck on those projects, I bet they're going to be great ☺️🫰🧶

@@grreeeeee because it's not harmful for your health and not using it because "gross" would just be a waste. People used to do that all the time when grocery stores weren't a thing yet. Also, bad news for you: the grains your flour was made of definitely had contact with some bugs at some point.

@@rochelle2758 Hello you as well! It's awful enough to find well fitting underpants and even bigger holes can be patched quite well with a patch of jersey on the sewing machine. And no, it does not rub you sore if you use cotton thread instead of poly. It' s also not so difficult to shorten stretched out bra straps and bands!

I earned a Serve Safe certification through school and one thing I learned is that taking customers' dishes & whatnot behind the counter is not allowed, even customers reusing the restaurant's dishes at a buffet is a no-no (i.e. going for another serving). But also the amount of single use items they're supposed to use in the food service industry is pretty crazy (e.g. gloves, hair nets, paper towels, etc) so I think just trying to reduce eating out probably is more sustainable too (at least in the USA with our regulations like this)

I agree. It often seems that the disabled community is forgotten when it comes to stuff like this. They say “refuse single use plastic like straws, buy whole vegetables to avoid plastic, wash and reuse ” but only offer alternatives that work for fully abled people. It seems many suggested solutions take extra time and effort that a lot of people simply don’t have. I like what Shelby (another sustainability creator) says, “do your best and advocate for the rest.” As to actual solutions that might be suitable for some disabled people, using a vegetable chopping box might be easy enough that you can buy whole vegetables rather than pre-cut packaged in plastic. You can sit at a table to do it. I can’t really think of anything else. I’m not physically disabled myself, so I’m not sure of exactly what struggles you might face. Would perhaps a tall chair/stool allow you to sit over the stove to cook? If energy levels are an issue, would it be easier to cook lots of food at once and freeze some of it for later? When you do eat takeout, you can reuse the containers either for their original purpose or as gardening containers or some other upcycled use

Any empty package is now a "trash bag" in my house. BUT... I buy chips, bread, pasta, and other things that come in paper or plastic bags. If I find a plastic bag in good condition left at a bottle return, I'll take it home and use for trash. I never buy trash bags, I just look for things that could be trash bags.
