Coolest DIY I've seen in a while. After losing MOST of my blue back herring this weekend on a striper outing, I'll be making one of these for my kayak.. I don't need to hold catch, just keep bait alive and lively. Thanks for the idea and inspiration brother!

I've made many types of live wells over the years including the spray bar ones. But my favorite is simpler and actually works better. Get a small bilge pump with the strainer intake on the bottom. Next get a piece of perhaps two inch thick styrofoam eight or more inches in diameter. Cut a hole through the middle just a shade larger than the pump intake. Tywrap the pump to the styrofoam with the strainer in the hole. Fill the ice chest with water and toss the pump in under the styrofoam. Yes the pump is upside down. Wire it and turn it on. It'll quickly foam the water with far more air than any spray bar will manage and circulate the hell out of the water. I've overcrowed a live well with shrimp and fished the entire day in summer heat and never lost a single shrimp. Another plus is the strainer is on the top and doesn't get stopped up with shrimp shells and such.

When you push the wires through, leave them about the thickness of the cooler on the inside then slather with silicone & pull into place. It will help get more sealant on the inside in case it ever tries to leak. After it's in place then put your bead of silicone around the inside and beat around the outside that way you're hopefully one hundred percent covered.

Have you ever considered making a portable cooler livewell using standard boat livewell tech? Most DIY builds simply recirculate the water in the cooler & provide some aeration, but I'd LOVE to see one that pulls in cooler lake water from a hose & allows overflow drainage. Ideally, the inlet hose would be long enough to pull from a depth to reach cool water, not just the top where the boat's hull sits.

Oh yeah, how do you fill it up on the boat? I have been there and done that with these. You ether have to keep a separate pump and hose setup to fill it up with or leave enough hose on the well pump can pitch out of the boat and into the water so you can fill the well. Filling them any other way sucks and/or can cause an accident.

@Fishin N Stuff, I built my own live well using your video as a guide and it is awesome- thank you! I have a question about your battery practices 🔋 . Do you run your tank the whole time you’re fishing, or do you kill the power every so often? My knowledge on batteries isn’t much, and I fish typically all night for Cats, so I fear a dead battery is imminent if I ain’t smart with it. I power my live well with a kayak battery, FYI. I’d love your advice/input along with any other fans of yours who happen to read this comment.

New subscriber here. Great DIY. I was wondering if you get trash caught in the PVC pipe? I was thinking if you used threaded couplings for the inlet and end cap you could take it apart and clean it much easier. Keep up the good work!
@FishinNStuff
@FishinNStuff 5 лет назад
I agree with you I saw a video where the guy did that , it's a good idea really . I was thinking about making one with a filter to clean the water before it reached the pump . I appreciate you subscribing brother , feel free to comment on anything if you have an idea

May i suggest using rubber seals to plug the hole up instead of using whatever it was you used that might poison the water you can get those rubber plugs that allow the wire to still feed thru but it still plugs it up. Also if that pumps anything like mine may want to wrap a sock around it with some mesh so it don't suck up junk,and feed it thru the spray bar and clog the holes
@FishinNStuff
@FishinNStuff 4 года назад
You may lol . Cause that's a good idea . After I made it I thought about a better idea , I could make the spray tubes (PVC) to where they could come back apart sho you can clean them too . I appreciate the input its aways welcome brother

Perfect Live Well except for all that weight to empty Out needs another pump to pump it out back into the lake or wherever But not a problem for ya

I thought about that but I just used my little bucket , I keep my castnet in to fill it and empty it . But it would make it easier

You can always connect tubing to the drain and empty into the lake. The cooler I'm going to use has a hose attachment on the drain and I will connect a hose with a shut off valve on the end to drain out.

Been doing this since 1975. The pump will heat the water & deplete the oxygen level. Gonna need to ice it periodically.

You need to filter the water pump will pickup trash from bottom and stop up the holes
@timparker1552

Being on the bottom I wonder if the pump gets that slime built up in it slowing it down. I always mount mine a little off the bottom
@FishinNStuff
@FishinNStuff 5 лет назад
That's a really good idea man , because your right I think it does to , I had one toi show down after a couple years of use . I normally just rinse it off after using and I had a older one I just ripped it out and replaced it they only cost 2.77 , but still that's a really good idea
@FishinNStuff
@FishinNStuff 5 лет назад
Ol my bad I was thinking of the bait cooler , but your still right there pump could clog up mine never did but it's still a good idea to mount it on the side instead of the bottom , I made that for a RU-vidr tournament I was in and I knew my live well wouldn't be big enough, and I was right caught a 50lber . Ive got a video about that and how it fit in there , but that's a great idea buddy I should have tried that . I learn a lot from peoples comments . I've since ordered me a SeaArk boat so I don't think I'll have live well issues any more

What about 2 pumps, 1 over the side to bring in fresh water and one in the cooler that pumps it back into the lake?

How do you fill it up! I would go one step further and hook up a pump with a hose feeding the cooler then connect a hose where the drain is to drain the water!

You probably should do that , i only used it 1 time for a tournament ,,,,, and i caught a 50lber 2ndcplace by the way lol ,,,,, I used a small bucket to fill it up and empty it .ive got a 40 gallon live well in my new boat
@dandemko5584

can you make a smaller version of this as a bait bucket? I like that pump much better than using those bubblers with the stones any advise?
@FishinNStuff
@FishinNStuff 2 года назад
I'll try and think of something . The only problem I would think would be that it will need a bigger battery than a bubble box to run the bigger pump
@superman5304
@superman5304 4 года назад
This is badass! Curious if you can install a bubbler with the bubbling stone strip instead of a water pump like that? Is this better than a bubbler because of the size of the tank?
