Katahdin is a magical place in winter.
We've climbed Maine's highest peak, located in Baxter State Park dozens of times, both summer and winter. This time the conditions lined up to go up and over the mountain via the Abol Trail instead of the long slog around on the park Tote Road via Roaring Brook Campground. It's shorter, but more consequential if the weather goes south or the avalanche conditions are active. The conditions were stunning, we had beautiful views of the Knife Edge and the vast Maine woods all to ourselves.
