Katahdin. This is the real deal. Remote. Alpine. Cold. New England’s most challenging winter ascent. It requires respect, experience, and planning. You need to be prepared for anything.
Was I prepared for everything that broke on me? You decide! Katahdin in winter has this mystique: A frigid and difficult landscape that only the most hardened and experienced mountaineers can tackle. I'm no professional so this video may show a more realistic experience for what it's like for expedition newby.
I learn what success really means, rocks are not your friend, and that pulling a sled 34 miles, sleeping outside, and climbing mountains everyday is very tiring.

So badass. I’d love to do some snowboarding on Katahdin one day but I’d need some more experience first. Some mountaineering skills and more time doing backcountry in the Whites would help I think.

Great video. I went there three winters ago, also spent 6 days with four others (all had strong mountain guiding experience except me). Also had a huge (12+ inches) snowstorm that yielded dangerous avalanche conditions, so we skied the fun streambeds around Chimney Pond. Did two pitches on the Cilley-Barber route, and the ice was incredibly hard to penetrate with tools and frontpoints. The ski in and out were brutal, and our blisters were worse (surprised you did not mention the blisters!). And, we had a great time - will never forget sitting on the Chimney Pond ice, after the snowstorm in the clear evening light / alpenglow, smoking cigars and staring at that beautiful glacial cirque...

Was in there in winter the last time in the mid '90s. Summited Baxter Peak. Our night at Roaring Brook rained like hell, got increasingly colder all week and by Friday was a code "red" (no climbing - cold and wind) so we bagged out a day early. Great times and a great sense of getting away from it all.

Had the sled exploded experience on Bigalow back in the 90s. I felt I had solid backcountry knowledge, but wasn't aware the sleds blow apart under 10F, and.... didn't know that propane turned liquid around -10F, so we burned through three canisters in first 20min of cooking the first night out.... Summited the next day, but bailed after considering lack of fire... Trip upped my respect for the cold, even though I grew up in Maine

Fun time, Saddle trail in the winter is usually great! We went up 2 weeks ago, it was windswept enough we went more to the left, because the right winter path was a solid sheet of ice. Basically stayed close to the shrubs 🤣
