After months of low motivation, I spent the first 30 days of January 2024 making sure I rode at least 30 minutes a day riding my bike. The results surprised me

Thank you for sharing your experience. Your result after riding consistently is encouraging! I was hit by a car whilst out on a ride a couple years ago and dropped from 12 hours a week to zero for about a year and lost practically all of my fitness. If I could get on the bike more consistently and for a duration of weeks, not just a few days here and there, I'm sure I could improve. I've been in a lull for the past couple months and I'm having a lot of difficulty increasing my FTP from 3.9 to 4.0 w/kg. It seems like every time I get close to 4.0 over the years I reach a plateau and can't get around it. Thank you again for sharing. I liked the video very much. :)

Glad you found it encouraging! You’ve got some good fitness if you’re getting near 4w/kg. Devote the time, even when you don’t want to and you’ll get there before you know it.

I did this in October. Everything you did was almost identical to what I did. Even started at similar weight and finished with an FTP test. Fitness increased similarly as well and I was just riding a couple days a week the months prior as well. I did have a week or two during the 30 days around or above 8 hrs. But what I noticed is I ended up really fatigued and burnt out at the end. There were a lot of days my legs stayed sore. I believe the 3rd or 4th week was almost the whole week. It was a good experiment but I've been on a 5 day plan since and I feel a lot better. I definitely need rest days and a better planned out routine.

Wow that's really awesome that my results back up what you experienced as well! And ditto on the fatigue. I know I briefly touched on it during my updates, but I experienced the same thing. It wasn't full on painful soreness for me but they felt heavy and hard to pedal. A few days off felt good, but I still had some of that fatigue built up during my final FTP test. I've been doing ~5 days a week as well and the fatigue is much more manageable. You really need those days off to recover and maintain.

Thanks! After not cycling much for many months, this was a challenge. It’s easy to talk about exercising and training every day. It’s entirely different to actually do it.

Thank you! It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. And the fatigue was something else. But I got a good kickstart to my fitness for this year!

Those FTP test are rough. Good job on sticking with it for 30 days. Well done!

They are tough, for sure. But it’s short term. Some of the Tour de Zwift rides and races I did over the month were just as bad. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I recently took a skinfold measurement and it turned out that my Garmin scale was off by 1 percent. But indeed, I wouldn't attach too much importance to a calculated body fat percentage

Wow just 1 percent is a lot better than I would have anticipated! Mine seemed to fluctuate quite a bit on my day to day measurements, so that’s why I didn’t put too much stock into it.

interesting that your body fat percentage fluctuates, mine hardly changes over a whole year. This is also why I attach little importance to it. It's strange, when I gain a few kilos the body fat percentage does not change.@@JMCyclingVideos

I think it’s all down to the scale. I’m using a Withings. Maybe it’s just not as accurate? I don’t know.

30 minutes is not much. As somebody that live in Amsterdam, I do that everyday anyway.

You all are very unique in your bicycle culture. When I have the opportunity to commute, it’s 30 minutes each way. For some, this challenge may not be much at all, but for me, it was difficult. Thanks for watching and commenting!
